I WFH FT, before the pandemic, I did 2-3 days a week. I have a dedicated office,that I can close the door to if needed. My husband now also WFH FT, his office is in our basement- so that helps. We like that we don't have to commute (both offices were in NYC). I do get up at 7, shower, get dressed (casual clothes though) and do my hair & makeup every single day. We both have flexibility in our jobs, so we like being able to get laundry done, run errands on our lunch, start dinner earlier, etc. It's not for everyone, but we both enjoy it for the most part. Our DD is 12, so she's in school all day, so not bothering us and when she comes home, she does homework or her own thing.
Do you need to do zoom calls? Is that the reason you do your hair and makeup everyday?
We do almost all of our calls over Teams, and put our cameras on most of the time. But, for me, I always do my hair and makeup (even on weekends), that's just me. It helps me to feel "ready for the world" LOL If I stayed in my pjs and didn't-- I wouldn't be productive.

WFH spinoff
I go onto the office one day a week and not even a full day. (Just show my face for about 5 hours) I love working from home. In my down time I can do so much and it doesn’t effect my productivity in any way. I also like the fact I can make a quick dentist appointment or something on my lunch hour without having to use a half day or whatever. I also save on expense for before care and after care for my daughter who is in 5th grade. If she is off from school and I have to work she’ll just hang out in the bedroom and talk to her friends on the phone. My husband works out of the house 5 days a week. The sales guys who I work for always tell me I get the job done so they couldn’t care if I worked from Timbuktu! I’d probably cry if I had to go back 5 days a week. Lol.

I definitely jsut wear leggings & Tshirt most days, will sometimes change into a nicer shirt for important meetings. Our culture has changed and everyone expects cameras on, with a professional or virtual backgroud- it's the only way corporate will allow everyone to continue working from home for most employees (some of us had it approved prior to). I actually like chatting with camera on, it's nice to see my coworkers- they are all over the country, so some I've only ever met via Teams!

WFH spinoff
I’m hybrid. I like the balance of being home and also coming to the office. I had a different hybrid job when my DD was a baby and she went to daycare. I couldn’t get any work done with her home.
A lot of jobs in my industry have gone remote. Fully in person jobs have become extremely difficult to fill. It’s a fairly niche field and if you’re able to offer a remote job you can accept applicants from all over the country, whereas if it’s in person you need someone local. So that makes in person roles doubly hard to fill.

I WFH part time and have for the past 5 years. I think that many young people want WFH jobs so that they can travel and live where ever. I don't think it's really about the childcare issue because you can't really be productive when you are trying to take care of a young child and work at the same time. It's about being able to take a NY job with a NY salary and relocate to somewhere a lot less expensive, or have the ability to travel and work from anywhere in the world.
Personally I am not sure why any company would want positions that can maintain productivity while being fully remote to have to come into the office. Rent is one of the largest company expenses outside of compensation. If you can have more people WFH on a full time basis it's much better for your bottom line.

This is so interesting that you say this. I feel like I have to turn on my video at zoom meetings, so that they know I am actually there and not pretending to be lol.

This is so interesting that you say this. I feel like I have to turn on my video at zoom meetings, so that they know I am actually there and not pretending to be lol.
Oh they know I'm there because I'm usually the one leading the calls or sharing a spreadsheet. No way for me to hide! LOL
I just don't think what I look like should have any bearing on the content I am sharing.
And if someone is sharing content, I am not focused on staring at their face on the screen, I'm either taking notes or looking at what they are presenting.

So in this example I think that's the corporate culture that's been set up over the years and it would be hard to break that now without people being unhappy - which would affect productivity. But frankly for the company overall, it is probably hurting profits. If they could find employees that would be equally productive working at home it would save them a ton of money. But it sounds like closing the office and making everyone remote right now would impact the current employees negatively.
For me though I would much prefer the option to work full time from home and maybe have annual corporate retreats with co workers somewhere fun and bi weekly or monthly lunches or dinners out to establish that human connection.

I WFH part time and have for the past 5 years. I think that many young people want WFH jobs so that they can travel and live where ever. I don't think it's really about the childcare issue because you can't really be productive when you are trying to take care of a young child and work at the same time. Personally I am not sure why any company would want positions that can maintain productivity while being fully remote to have to come into the office. Rent is one of the largest company expenses outside of compensation. If you can have more people WFH on a full time basis it's much better for your bottom line.
My company wants the culture of being together and working together. They do many things for the employees during work hours so it is just more than work.
Yes I can understand if it affects productivity or corporate culture but there are so many positions that really do not need to be in the office and everyone can benefit from those individuals working remote.
For example, I am a consultant and I don't have any face to face interaction with my clients. My boss wanted me to come to his house in westchester once a month to work. I was like why???? It will just make me commute to do the same stuff I do at home and we don't need to interact in any way at all...
I don't see any of my customers or reps and could do it all from home. We worked from home 5 days a week for a year and a half and it worked but honestly I think everyone likes coming in to the office to get a little bit of a break and doing more fun things with coworkers.
So in this example I think that's the corporate culture that's been set up over the years and it would be hard to break that now without people being unhappy - which would affect productivity. But frankly for the company overall, it is probably hurting profits. If they could find employees that would be equally productive working at home it would save them a ton of money. But it sounds like closing the office and making everyone remote right now would impact the current employees negatively.

Yeah I thought that too until I went back a few times a week and really like it. Too much chaos at home and I have no dedicated area. Others I work with are in their living rooms and bedrooms too so it is a nice break to get out to a real desk area.
I like not having to go out when the weather is bad and sitting outside for lunch though.

WFH spinoff
i would love a WFH job. My husband has been WFH since the pandemic. It has enhanced our quality of life - no more waking up at 5 AM, spending hours in traffic. He actually got to know his son and spends more time with him than I do since I'm in education. IT has allowed us to keep up with things during the week and not feel so spread thin. I would never not have childcare even if I worked from home. I hear alot of parents saying its nice to be able to pick up their kid from school or go to a practice and have some flexibility.

For us the main difference with my husband at home now is our ability to travel. Since 2020 we have been spending a month away every summer. I think it's great for our kids - they are getting to see so much of the world. We do have to build in time to get our work done but we typically build a week or two of vacation into that time so that we have some time off.

Same. I think there is a lot of privilege when it comes to the people who can work from home with no issues.
Perhaps if I had a large house -or even a decent sized house-I'd feel differently.
I have no spare bedrooms and no basement. I have no room in my bedroom for a desk- I barely have room in there for a bed. So I sit on the bed to work. Real comfortable and efficient.
My office is my backyard patio table weather permitting and weather not permitting I am shit out of luck.
And imagine the people who live in small apartments. It's even worse for them.
I'd pay money right now to have an office to go into to work like a human being again

WFH spinoff
My husband is self employed and WFH 95% of the time. Some times he needs to go on site but rarely. I also work but i have a job that i work during school hours.
Would not want it any other way. If you can get a WFH job and get paid the same way, why not. Saves time and money on commuting, lunches, and child care most of the time.

I think maybe in the NY metro area it is, but I think outside of this area where the cost of living is so much cheaper it’s easier to find an affordable house with an extra bedroom that can function as an office and guest room. But I watch a LOT of HGTV and homes are now always being staged with an extra bedroom set up as an office or some little nook that can serve as office space. And you never see a formal living room anymore and the dining room is almost gone too. Just a sign of how the way we use our homes are changing.
But I think a lot of the younger people are looking for WFH arrangements so they have freedom to live wherever and travel whenever. Something people our age never would have even dreamed of.

For me, it's not really new. People started working from home in the company I used to work for when they started having babies--and 1 of those babies is a senior in HS.
It was always an issue because it was only offered to people w/ kids, but a few years before the pandemic I started 1 day a week. (parents had 2-4)
Most of them had help, but it was helpful for them to not have to commute. Most of them stopped work early & picked back up at night.
My DH is home all the time now (he can go in if he wants) but we are saving so much money on his commute.
I am looking for a job, but I can't go back to 3 hour round trip commutes & 10 hour in-office work days, plus late night & weekend WFH.

I've had the option to work from home ..here and there as needed...since 2004 ish. Recent I was working from home most Fridays because it became my habit and was a nice break. I probably could have gotten away with more. The nature of my job definitely allowed it and my boss really didn't care as long as I came in when he came to my office so we could work together.
I just had no idea when I took this job that it would become 100% remote forever.
I honestly didn't sign up for that. I've thought of looking for something else, especially in times where my depression and isolation are particularly bad....but I have a really good situation in every single other way so I just suck it up
