I see more and more posts in moms' groups or job groups of people looking for strictly work from home jobs. It seems the younger generation got a taste of WFH during the pandemic and want to ONLY WFH now. I find this kind of interesting. I get that it's hard to afford daycare and work, but we all somehow managed it and I feel like the younger parents don't want to even try.

In honesty, I think having to pay for childcare pushed me to try to advance my career more because I needed to cover that cost and still earn money.

Just an observation on my part. I guess the isolation of the pandemic could account for some people not wanting to get out there as well.

Re: WFH spinoff

I literally HATE it.
I feel so isolated, I feel like I have no connection to people, my work has suffered. I have no focus.
I rarely get dressed, I sit around the house in my pajamas and have gotten so depressed.
I have never come so close in my life to wanting to go on meds.

I really don't' understand why anyone would WANT this- unless maybe you are a recluse or have social anxiety and just love isolation.

I work four 10 hour days and have the option to work two of them at home. Sometimes I do, sometimes I just do one at home. But I can't imagine doing all of it from home all the time. I would go insane. Plus my productivity wouldn't be where it should be. I have a nice balance now.

The kicker is if you’re working from home and don’t have childcare, how much are you actually working? I have 2 friends who WFH and one of them has their kid in daycare, the other has someone in the house watching him.
So I’d be weary of those who say it’s easier for childcare. I’m not paying you to watch your kid

I also find that a lot of the reasons sited for loving working from home equate to doing things during the day you shouldn't be if you are working.

Oh I can do all my laundry, clean my house, prep dinner during the work day, go to doctor's appts during the day, run errands.
Um and how much time do you spend doing your job?
I know we are all entitled to breaks and lunch hours but it seems work takes a back seat for many when they are working from home

Totally agree! And maybe that's why the younger generation wants to do it.

We are hiring at our office and the #1 question we get is this a work from home position, even though every ad we place strictly states in office position.

I think it has to do with commuting and taking that off the table. And being able to attend to some every day chores while home.
I know that if I worked from home, having my communiting time would really enhance my life.

I love the hybrid I do now, 2 days at home, 3 in the office. I get a taste of both. I have worked full time since the age of 19 and only started wfh with the pandemic. I could never work with young kids and can barely work with 3 other adults in the house many days. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I think many take advantage though while I just take my hour lunch break. I DO love getting things done around the house because my entire weekends were doing laundry and such when I worked ft out of the house.

I feel I have have worked harder and more because I can just get on and do some work at all hours unlike just working 9-5 and having no access to work before and after that.

Yes, I used to get up at 5:15am everyday to get myself and the kids ready and then off to work. I was lucky to live close to work as well as the daycare and schools and camp close.
Now I get up at 7am when I work from home.

Re: WFH spinoff

I don't see how you can focus on your job and get work done if you have children at home that are younger than 4 or 5. Older than that I can see it, because they are more self sufficient. But I am in finance, I can't do my job and take care of a toddler, maybe in other positions it is possible.

This is not March 2020, we are 2.5 years in, people need to be responsible.

ETA: I am hybrid, I go in 1 day, in March it will be 2 days. I Love it! But I have tried very hard to not take advantage so that we do not lose this perk (I still view it as a perk). I do not miss the days of getting my kids to daycare by 7 am to catch a 7:20 train!

For me, it would be an extra 2 hours a day that I would get back.
I am not sure if I would like WFH more than a couple of days a week.

Yes, my commute is about an hour round trip so I gain that.
No, I like getting out of the house too, having some socialization, sitting down eating lunch with coworkers and just having a quieter environment.

During the pandemic, I was just happy to not have the commute. When I logged off, I was done! You can cook dinner or do so much in the hour you would have been commuting. I hardly did any house chores during the day when WFH. The most I did was throw in some laundry. I'm back full time in the office, but I would love even one day home. Oh well, I''m happy to have a job!

Funny because I would love even ONE day in an office. Wish we could trade off somehow!
LOL

The thing I find is that now that I am home I work LONGER hours. So because I don't have to close up and drive home I end up sitting on the computer until 6 or 630.
And in the morning I'm usually ready to work by 7 or 730 after DD goes to the bus so I turn on the computer out of boredom and send a few emails or do a few things in the time I would have been driving to work.
And next thing you know I'm working at 12 hour day!

That would be my DH.
He's either making noise doing home improvement projects while I'm on a call, whipping up things in the blender or food processor, or blasting some podcast on his phone.

Yup me too. I am in the living room so in the middle of it all. When they are all out of the house and it is just me and the sleeping dog, it is wonderful lol

I WFH FT, before the pandemic, I did 2-3 days a week. I have a dedicated office, that I can close the door to if needed. My husband now also WFH FT, his office is in our basement- so that helps. We like that we don't have to commute (both offices were in NYC). I do get up at 7, shower, get dressed (casual clothes though) and do my hair & makeup every single day. We both have flexibility in our jobs, so we like being able to get laundry done, run errands on our lunch, start dinner earlier, etc. It's not for everyone, but we both enjoy it for the most part. Our DD is 12, so she's in school all day, so not bothering us and when she comes home, she does homework or her own thing.

Do you need to do zoom calls? Is that the reason you do your hair and makeup everyday?

I WFH full-time and love it. I get up and get ready just as if I was going to the office. I drop my child off at school, grab coffee and in front of my desk for 8-10 hours a day at min. I stop downstairs when my daughter comes home from school to say hi but then it's right back to work. In order for it to work you have to be consistent and focused . I love the fact that I don't have the constant interruptions that come with working in an office. I find that it's easier for me to concentrate but I have a separate space that I work in with a whole office setup.

I make sure I have dedicated childcare and if not my DH or I take a day off.
I do not do ANY household chores during work hours. I find that I would rather WFH and save myself the 1hr trip each way.

LOL- funny... I was just telling my DH the other day- I never put make up on unless I'm going out because that shit is expensive and I hate to waste it when nobody is going to see me! Chat Icon (i don't do video calls ever so that's not an issue)

Yup, waste of money IMO too. My mother always had to put on makeup and do her hair, even if she was only going to the mailbox that day. Makes no sense to me.

I am looking for a fully WFH job. Right now I am hybrid (for the time being , I think they are eyeing a return to 5 days but I hope not). I feel like it allows me for more flexibility when I am WFH. I still would have my toddler in daycare even if I WFH though because it would be impossible to get any work done with him at home.

I work hybrid and like it. I like the flexibility to be at home so I don’t have to scramble for childcare after school (my kids are almost 13 and 10 so it’s mainly just being there to drive them). I also like the flexibility to get things done during the week. They leave at 7:10 and I don’t have to log on until 8:30-9 so I do a lot of my food shopping and laundry in the morning.

The one downside I’ve seen though in being home is that my work has not changed in 3 years. I’ve lost some of it (we sold some business I work on) so I’m not feeling challenged and I like being home because I do have free time once my stuff is done or while I’m waiting on others to do things.
