People who WFH, what do you do?
What field are you in? How hard is it to get in if you aren't already in it?
I'm in higher ed, and I have been working a hybrid schedule post covid and its been great- however our manager recently told us that we most likely will have to go back in the office 5 days a week in the fall, so I am dreading this. WFH def gave me some flexibility and I just can't see myself commuting to/from the office 5 days a week again. That being said, WFH jobs in my field are hard to come by... I also applied to some HR jobs since that is where I initially started my career before switching, but I've been out of it for so long I think people just gloss over my resume.... just was looking for some other ideas/fields I haven't thought of.

Technology.
I am forced to work from home full time and I absolutely hate it.
My mental health has never been worse.
Just some food for thought.

I've been WFH part time for years before the pandemic.
I've been WFH full-time since the pandemic.
My mental health has never been better.
Everyone is different. I love it, and it gives me more time to do things I enjoy. I rarely socialized at work. Just during lunch. I spend more time with people outside of work, so I prefer not being in an isolated cubicle.

My husband is in IT.
He was part time pre Covid.
He has been full time at home since Covid.
His mental health is great and he is very happy. My mental health is not because he is always home lol.

I have never WFH before the pandemic. We went back after a year and a half but hybrid and I love it. I am able to be home 2 days and in the office 3. It has been working well and they are happy with this and they have not mentioned coming back 5 days anytime soon.

People who WFH, what do you do?
I'm in higher ed. I would have never been able to WFH before the pandemic, but my boss has allowed me to permanently work from home b/c my specific job doesn't require me to be in person. So now they're able to use my office for someone else.

Tow tuck vehicle financing for a bank
We never worked from home before the pandemic. We were so heavily paper dependent
When the pandemic hit they threw together a paperless plan in two days
I go to the office 2 days a week now whichever two days I want

When the pandemic hit they threw together a paperless plan in two days
I go to the office 2 days a week now whichever two days I want
This would be ideal.
I don't think I'd want to go in every single day, but the option to get the hell out of my house and work at a real desk with other humans would be nice.
And then I am like the ONLY person in the world who doesn't like working from her kitchen table and doing laundry and scrubbing the toilets in between work and using the work day to run errands, so then I feel even more like I need mental help.
Like what is wrong with me that I HATE being home?

I work for an advertising/IT company. 80% of our company works remote. I went fully remote in 2015, so pre-pandemic. It has its good and bad points!

I’m in higher ed (adjunct mixed with permanent contract work).
The permanent contract work is all in person. The adjunct work is 100% WFH. I always had some sort of WFH with marking and planning for as long as I can remember. I do not enjoy teaching online because there are just certain things that cannot be done in a Zoom meeting. I cannot correct speaking (I teach language) as well as I could in a classroom. I don’t get much satisfaction as I would in a classroom.
I have a new job that will be completely in person starting soon, and I can’t wait.
If I had a different career, I would be OK with working from home as long as I continued to have the home office I have now.

When I worked from home,
It was with graphic design. The company I did most of my work for went under because of covid and never recovered. I absolutely LOVED WFH and miss it all the time.

I am an accountant but I am pretty specialized within the hedge fund industry. My job was WFH pre pandemic. It is not something you can just get into without a lot of education and experience. I got very lucky to find something WFH in my field. that being said, compared to my work from the office peers, I make crap money. But, I have great hours and tons of flexibility which I still need at this point in my family life.

I work in IT but I’ve been working from home before the pandemic I was actually hired as full time remote worker. I don’t even work in the same state as my company.
My previous job which I held her a very long time and was let go Due to cut I had the flexibility to work from home when wanted. I used to go in the office most of the time because I felt like I worked better in the office but now that I have my set up at home I get the same amount of work done.

People who WFH, what do you do?
Both WFH IT Techs for over 20 years.
We own our own business and all is from home.
Never went to school for it and worked for a IT company and was taught everything we know and from there we got our first company to work for and then went on our own.
Husband also does stereo installations, home/company audio, and electrical...all was self learned.

Research operations. Depending on what you do in higher Ed, you may be able to transition to a research related role. I’m in medical research so it’s very specialized, but universities do all sorts of research that would not require such specialized education/experience.

Exactly, nothing is wrong with you Nell. There are a lot of people who go into the our offices because their apartment is too small, they want to socialize and just don't like being home.
I agree MissJones, I have dedicated office, my husband leaves the house for work and my son is usually at school - I enjoy it and my commute into the city can be draining. For me WFH is so much easier and a better work life balance. However, now my DH is home during the day since he temporarily is doing nights and my son is home for the summer. It's annoying, so I go in the office more now in the summer.
To answer OP:
Im in Technical Program Management. Was Hybrid before Covid then got laid off the first year of the pandemic, now I am fully remote with the option to go in the office whenever I want. If you are organized and have an appreciation or knack for herding cats and fixing things it's easier to get in the project management field than others.

Thanks all for sharing your positions/industries. I do know there are industries that have more WFH opportunities but wasn't sure if it was feasible to break in if you aren't already experienced.
WFH gives me more work/life flexibility which I need with 3 kids lol.
I have been doing my job from home with no issues/complaints (right now we are on a hybrid schedule and we rotate staff who are WFH and in the office to make sure there is coverage) but its more like upper management seeing what other places are doing, which is annoying because I am sure that is going to decrease employee morale making people come back 5 days.

I'm in Compliance Risk Management.
Prior to COVID I WFH 1-2 days a week. I WFH full time now although I do have the option to go into the office I choose not to. Between the COVID regulations (vcxx), crime on subways and the time and money needed to commute back and forth it's not worth it.
Not sure what you do in Higher Ed but I would suggest looking at banking firms, rating agencies etc for analytical positions. Many of these companies have divisions where they deal with higher education (think bond sales, charter schools, etc) and having analysts, bankers that come from the field is very valuable.

I think a lot depends on the management at your organization. We were FT in person pre-covid and now we are hybrid with only one day in person right now.
I am in accounting and can work from home easily. I did work briefly in higher education and they are in one day a week as well.

I think you should wait it out. I was told we would be back 5 days a week in Sept of 2021. Never happened. People just don't show up. They eventually said ok, 3 days until March 2022.
Same exact thing happened in March of 2022 - they said 5 days, no one listened.
Now we are being told we can have 3 days a week in the office until the end of summer and then they will decide. They had us take a survey.
People are quitting left and right (after they gave everyone a 7% raise and a chance for a 4-6 week paid leave every 5 years after you hit 15 years).
I work for an investment bank. I'm in operations though - tech is a little more flexible and sales/traders are a little less flexible.

The market is really good right now. It is very competitive. We have people who moved out of state and they aren't doing a thing about it. Maybe once things get a little tighter, things will change. As of now...there is no carrot and no stick in terms of showing up at work. I have heard similar reports across the industry.
(And frankly, based on my ability to get a seat on the LIRR when I go in, I don't think it's that uncommon.)
