It is ironic though to have created this entire playground for the mega wealthy and, as the divide between the wealthy and the upper middle, middle, and lower class increasingly grows, now they have no one to work in their glitzy realm.

The article mentioned more than just servers but also teachers and nurses.

Real Estate prices and the taxes on Long Island are back breaking. Throw in the highest average utilities and it's hard to just break even.

Going off track, sorry, but water is the cheapest here though as I remember my parents when they lived in FL paid $50 a month while my bill was about that much if not less every 3 months.

What does your electric bill look like? On average, our utilities on a whole are more expensive then average.

My electric bill is $169/month. I still work from home so I am thinking it will go back down once I go back to the office. My one kid is going back college too so one less person will be here.

Do you live in Greenport? My electric bill is a lot more then that but even if you take the 2 of us out of the equation..On average...we pay very high utilities. NY on a whole doesn't look that bad unless you carve out downstate.

Oh, but you know, they don’t want to work because unemployment pays well. Chat Icon

Exactly!! Everyone is hiring, everywhere you go, there are signs saying we are hiring, but no one wants to work...pretty sad.

Because many are making more on unemployment. I have seen help wanted in almost every store I have gone into lately.

Now the lower paid workers are in a position to ask for better wages. There is plenty of labor if employers are willing to pay them. Labor is just demanding better pay...supply and demand.

These jobs aren’t meant to support a household. They are jobs, not careers. I still can’t get behind a college aged kid making $18 to work fast food. My first JOB I made barely nothing and learned to budget my money. After a year I got a raise and a promotion. Still made little, but I slowly worked my way up until I got my college degree and left the job, with tons of experience and references that praised me. If you want to make more money you need to work your way up….not start at $20+ an hour.

As for the Hamptons, you would be surprised at the amount of foreign students they employ. They sometimes even pay for their rentals. I know Splish splash even did this. It due to Covid they can not bring in foreign employees. So it’s not completely about money, it’s Covid restrictions.

For lots, this is their career choice. Not everyone wants to or has the ability to move past high school in education. And why has minimum wage not kept up with inflation? If minimum wage kept up with inflation - it would be about $24.
Minimum wage is a term that was implemented to be the minimum wage by FDR as the minimum a worker could be paid to allow for "him" to have food, shelter, clothes and support a family.

May I ask where you found that quote from FDR?

Nope, I do have a smaller home though. No pool and am frugal with having all lights on all the time.

In my Inaugural I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.

Throughout industry, the change from starvation wages and starvation employment to living wages and sustained employment can, in large part, be made by an industrial covenant to which all employers shall subscribe.

Thank you.
I don’t see him say to support a family on minimum wage.

It's in the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. I also did not quote FDR but there is plenty of his published speeches that speak of this.

In his 1933 address following the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Act, President Franklin D. Roosevelt noted that “no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.”

“By ‘business’ I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level?—?I mean the wages of decent living,” he stated.

“Without question,” explained FDR, “[the minimum wage] starts us toward a better standard of living and increases purchasing power to buy the products of farm and factory.”Link to FDR's statement

Yes Golden already quoted, thanks.

I answered above.

It seems some of you are saying that if you have a learning or intellectual disability and can only have a minimum wage job then you shouldn’t be able to have a family and a home and a decent life.

That seems unfair and, frankly, cruel.

Who said that?

Do you think everyone should make the same pay no matter how much education and experience they have?

Many don’t want to work as it is easier to get the unemployment which many times is more than they were making at a job. Or they can work a few hours at a job and still get unemployment.

The extra unemployment is only until the end of the summer. VERY few people are taking this approach

I agree with Cookie, it's better that the workers are able to demand a livable wage - finally

As someone mentioned before, minimum wage needs to have been kept up with inflation. It should be around $24. If anyone currently makes $24 after years of hard work and is mad at that notion, then you’re underpaid as well and shouldn’t be.

People working minimum wage jobs should have adequate housing and a life to support a small family if they choose to have one. People need to be paid fairly.

Look at the Hamptons crumbling without low wage workers. They are essential to small businesses and the public. They deserve a fair income.

I just heard November today unless that was just the regular unemployment, not 100%.
I know quite a few because you can work shorter hours and still receive this money.

All businesses can not afford to pay that amount of money and if they do, then your hours will be less because they will divide it up between people.
I don’t see how you can fathom to pay someone with no experience working $24/hour. How much would the person with 30 years of work experience get paid then? Or the person who has a masters or PHD?

Labor is typically one of the most, if not the most, expense of a business. And since it's an expense of a business, it's a tax deduction and lowers the tax liability to the corporation or the owner if it's a pass through.
Maybe for the pizza place claiming little income because most of it is cash...an increase in min. wage may hurt them if they need to hire employees.
Businesses, like Wal Mart, already divide up hours to avoid full time workers and being forced to pay benefits.
I make much more then $24 dollars and I don't have a problem with lower skilled workers in places like Wal Mart and Amazon warehouse making that. All ships rise on an incoming tide.

That’s great. I would have a problem with my 17 year old making $24 when I was making the same after 30 years of experience. I would have a problem with someone in an entry level job making $24 when someone who has gone through years of college making a few bucks more.
There has to be a line where education and experience allow more pay opportunities.
What is the incentive in life to make more of someone who does much less work is making the same as someone who has worked their way up?
People won’t be working full time either with a minimum wage that high. Soooo...there would be no change or help to anyone.

Re: There Are Jobs in the Hamptons. If Only Workers Could Afford The Rent.

I think the huge issue (and I may be Captain Obvious here, but) everything is so damned expensive. In the 50’s my grandfather worked as a bartender and my grandma was a SAHM. They bought a house in Queens. Same situation now – unheard of.
Luckily (and I do know how lucky I am), I inherited and live in that house. I couldn’t afford a house in Queens otherwise.
If cost of living was lowered (I don’t know how it could be done), it would trickle down to other areas (rent, minimum wage, health insurance, goods, etc.) and people would be able to live more comfortably.
No one should be financially struggling through life. I really mean and believe that.

They shouldn’t but people should be rewarded for working hard and everyone shouldn’t receive the same pay while some are busting their ass and others just sit around waiting for a paycheck.

I’m sitting at a public beach and thinking to myself how much my taxes or the cost to go to the beach would go up if all these people made $24 an hour. How on earth would you pay the toll booth people $24? The trash collector $24? The office people $24? The concession people $24? That’s ridiculous to ask of any business.

I don’t see how you can fathom to pay someone with no experience working $24/hour. How much would the person with 30 years of work experience get paid then? Or the person who has a masters or PHD?

I’m sitting at a public beach and thinking to myself how much my taxes or the cost to go to the beach would go up if all these people made $24 an hour. How on earth would you pay the toll booth people $24? The trash collector $24? The office people $24? The concession people $24? That’s ridiculous to ask of any business.

$24 dollars was stated because that is what the minimum wage would be if it kept up with inflation. That is not what is on the table as a proposal.

As someone mentioned before, minimum wage needs to have been kept up with inflation. It should be around $24. If anyone currently makes $24 after years of hard work and is mad at that notion, then you’re underpaid as well and shouldn’t be.

People working minimum wage jobs should have adequate housing and a life to support a small family if they choose to have one. People need to be paid fairly.

My son's step brother is making $25 an hour and he's 14 and working for his mother.

So you think pay should be scaled on how hard the work is? Physically hard? Mentally hard? Because I think a pre school teacher is a much harder job mentally and physically then an actuarial. So by your thought process...the preschool teacher should make more?
