Running

Through the years I’ve always loved to run for exercise and just started doing it again for the past 2 months.

Results are real slow as far as weight loss goes; but I promised myself not to give up.

My company who has close to 1000 employees nationwide; is doing a Step Challenge.
There are a few people (not many) doing over 30K steps a day. Including my running in the morning; I sometimes have a challenge doing 10K a day.

WTF are these people doing? Strapping their Fit Bit to their dog? Chat Icon

Anyone else on here Run for exercise or weight loss?
If so, do you find weight loss is slow? Chat Icon

Re: Running

Weight loss is 80% diet and 20% exercise as a general rule.

You can lose weight without exercising at all- or you can exercise like a fiend and lose nothing - if you aren't cleaning up your diet and cutting calories.

They always say- you can't outrun a bad diet.

When my husband first started his weight loss journey he didn't exercise at all- he was too overweight and felt uncomfortable going to a gym or even just walking was a lot for him at that weight- he just was super strict about his diet and dropped 25 pounds before he ever set foot in a gym or did any exercise.

How is your diet?

Also- strength training is super important for weight loss - alongside your cardio- because the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn at rest.

Yes, you are so right on that.

My diet is I would say 90% clean. Always was. So its crazy to me. I also weight lift with dumbbells only 2x a week for about an hour.

But I guess with my body it just takes time.
It's possible I eat too much on certain days....

His issue was insulin resistance. He cannot do traditional diets where you just count calories, like weight watchers
His body cannot handle carbs- even the healthier ones like oatmeal and beans etc.
He had to completely cut out all processed carbs and sugar.
Once he figured that out, he's kept if off for almost 4 years now.

Re: Running

I average over 20,000 steps per day, but I am very active. I run at least 30 miles a week and walk probably 14 miles per week. I lift weights 3-5 times per week. I have only gotten over 30,000 steps one day in the last 5 years of tracking steps.

Running is good for your cardiovascular fitness, but does not always equate to losing weight. To lose weight, you need to be in a calorie deficit. Unfortunately, eating "clean" does not necessarily mean you are in a deficit. I use quotes because clean is very subjective.

When I dialed in my eating a few years ago, I did macro tracking, which helped to change my body composition. I did it for about 5 months and got a better handle on what nutrients I should be consuming throughout the day. I will say macro tracking was very time consuming, but it did help me recognize the quantities I should be eating. It also did not allowed me the flexibility to still eat foods that I liked.

Yes, I know. I definitely have to revamp my calories for sure. I had gone into deficit about 2 years ago for a month or two; and I lost from it. It certainly worked! Hard to get back into it because when I try; I always seem to go over 100+.

I hate that I love food too....

I too love food.

I found better understanding portions really helped me. I eat ice cream pretty much every night, but I limit it to a serving size. I also eat a cookie or something small after lunch. You can eat the foods you love within reason. I wouldn't want to live my life depriving myself of foods I enjoy.

Running

I also suggest trying to increase your non exercise activity throughout the say. I force my family to go on a nightly walk. It is 30 minutes of uninterrupted family time. We have good conversation and everyone gets some exercise and outside time. I consider this time non exercise as they walk SO SLOW - LOL.

As crazy as it sounds, I sometimes will go on the treadmill after dinner and just walk for ten or twenty. Whatever I need to do to make my 10K steps a day. Or I do laundry Chat Icon

Yep, this baby fell wayyyy off the grid.
Let's see if it re-appears on D&F now instead of 19 years ago.
