Ambulance workers in Los Angeles County, California, have been told not to transport hospital patients that have extremely low chances of survival.
The directive comes as officials say the region could soon hit over 1,000 Covid-related deaths per day, and hospitals are overrun with patients.
Emergency workers have also been told to ration oxygen, which is in short supply due to the pandemic.
Hospital beds in LA are running low and officials fear a post-holiday spike.
New York City issued a similar directive to ambulance workers in April 2020 at the height of the city's Covid outbreak, instructing them not to bring in patients who were unable to be resuscitated at the scene.

It is happening in England, not California. My mistake.

Patients in emergency calls classified as category two, such as those involving a suspected stroke or chest pains, should be seen by paramedics within an average of 18 minutes but are being forced in some cases to wait up to 10 hours.
Even life-threatening calls where patients are in cardiac arrest and should be reached within seven minutes have experienced delays, with data suggesting one such call was waiting 20 minutes on Monday.

The service experienced its busiest day ever on New Year’s Day, with ambulances attending 3,700 patients. The pressure on London’s hospitals has also meant delays of up to six hours for ambulances to hand over patients to hospital staff.
One paramedic told The Independent: “Patients desperately requiring ambulances aren’t getting them and, anecdotally, people are deteriorating and dying whilst waiting. Our poor dispatchers have to stare at screens of held calls, working out who gets the next available resource and who waits, suffers or dies.”

Leaving people to die in ambulances? Oh my gosh that is terrible! Where is this?
Hospitals in CA are so overrun that they are on the brink of having to "ration care" - decide who to treat and who not to, based on the chances of survival. It's almost to the point where Drs really have to play God. That is a heavy load to place on someone's shoulders. 
Why is it so bad there when they have some of the strictest lockdowns in the nation?
What is going on?
My guess, and it really is just a guess, is more in home get togethers with no distancing and no masks. With everything shut down, that what people do.
Yep. Which is why closing restaurants etc is counter productive.
You think they'd learn this by now.

I feel like this was the case in NYC too in the spring. That order Not sure what the outcomes were.
My sister is an EMT under the FDNY and this was the same order they were given in the spring.
