My friend's sister has an apartment in her house and the tenant is under section 8.

She has a good tenant, so it is working out and she likes that Suffolk County pays a portion of rent directly to her, so she doesn't have to worry about rent coming in.

Right now, I don't believe that agencies are accepting new applications for vouchers. I know for sure that they aren't in the city and I am pretty sure they aren't on Long Island, either. As for how long it could take, even if the waiting list was open.... years.

Many of my clients recieving financial support from the Department of Social Services. They typically pay $309 for an individual towards the rent (directly to the landlord) and the renter pays the rest. Sometimes the amount DSS puts towards the rent can be more depending on how many people are in the family. When my clients go down to DSS, their landlords recieve the money within 30-45 days.

In Suffolk County each individual township (Smithtown, Huntington, Brookhaven, Islip, Babylon) as well as some incorporated villages (Patchogue) administer their own Section 8 program, as well as Community Development Corporation (who administers a program for all of Suffolk County). Every now and again the "list" opens - which essentially means that applications are being accepted. Applicants who are accepted are wait-listed. Each township and CDC have their own wait lists, and the time spent on each is very different. I know people that have been waiting for 10 years for their number on the waiting list to come up.

Re: Section 8

I know of several complexes on LI geared towards the elderly and disabled where a 1-bedroom is under $1425 a month.

I can FM you the info if you are interested.

The cost of living on LI is crazy. 1425 is still high for someone who is living on a fixed income.
