Is it illegal to bury your pets in your yard??
Where can I find the law on this? I'm having trouble googling it. TIA!

Yes. When my dog died they offered to cremate her or give her to me. They said we won't ask what you do but, you are not supposed to bury her in your backyard. I don't think anyone would enforce it as long as your buried really deep.
I cremated my dog but, I did bury countless hamsters in my yard as a kid.

My dog is buried in my Aunt's backyard. She wasn't put to sleep but died in my mom's arms in the middle of the night.

When my cat died and I initially asked to take her home to be buried, the vet asked me to make sure, if I did bury her in the backyard, to put her in an airtight, steel container and bury her deep enough that other animals wouldn't be able to dig her up.

OMG I didnt know this!! There's a lot of pets in my parents backyard from over the years. 2 dogs, 2 ferrets, probably about 4 cats and I think a bird. My dad always digs deep and tehy have a big backyard so they're all waaayy in the back.

You could try contracting Animal Control or the Board of Health for LI or NY to confirm.

yup.
and i remember dh's uncle's next door neighbor dog died, they didn't bury it properl(deep enough & contained) and it started smelling.

My vet told me it was but after my cat was put to sleep he gave her back to me in a cardboard casket to bury.

Personally, I wouldn't do it, even if it's legal, definitely NOT a dog or cat.
First, I wouldn't want them to be there and I move. I have no intention of being in this house forever and there is no way I'm leaving Schultz (who was 110 lbs anyway) for anyone else, he's coming with me.
Second, I wouldn't want something (one of my other dogs - or any other animal) - to try and dig up whatever I buried.

we've buried dozens of animals over the years. no other animal has ever tried to dig them up.

ITA. Or, if I were going to bury a dog, I'd have them cremated first and even that I'd want buried very deeply. I'm sure there's Board of Health regulations prohibiting this anyway.

i didnt know this.. we buried our cat in my parents backyard 3 years ago when she passed of old age..  Our dog was cremated since she had to be put to sleep.
I never knew there was a law against it thogh. hmm interesting, good to know for the future.

I think it probably is but all ours were buried at our old house (birds, rabbits, cat, turtles) im not sure what my parents did with our dogs.
I know my friend burried his large lab in his yard

I would be too worried another animal would dig them up. Or that if I moved, they would be left there without me.
