Dormer shell
I want to dormer my cape and make it 3 bedrooms, and my husband is very handy. Does anyone know approximate cost of having a contractor do a shell for the dormer? My husband will do all finishing work. TIA!!

Re: Dormer shell
I think there is a dormer company that specializes in that called Just Shells. I don't know anything about their reputation though.

I've seen their trucks around - they're called "Shells Only." I've looked them up though and, ironically, they emphasize that they do all phases of dormers, not just shells. So why name your company that? Weird.

Re: Dormer shell
You can have any contractor do the shell only. Shells only is a great company, but there are other great contractors to look into. Make sure you do your research before signing a contract, and also make sure the contract is not vague and includes everything you want done to your home.
Check out the BBB before meeting with a contractor. Scott

It's just a gimmick. They do all phases of the work. And also pretty much every full service dormer company can just do the shell.
But you also have to decide if they are literally doing JUST the shell. Do you also want them to do the electrical and plumbing? If your DH isn't doing the roughouts for the electrical and plumbing (and for instance just doing the sheetrock)... that is going to significantly add to the cost of the project.

Re: Dormer shell
Thanks! Yes-my husband will be doing electric, but not the plumbing.
