What’s the problem?
It’s the harm reduction method to substance use disorder. Harm reduction is statistically shown to work better than shaming someone.

I don’t think shaming is the answer for any type of abuse especially a very addictive one like drugs. The system for sure needs improvement in different levels but this approach is pretty much encouraging the use of illegal drugs proudly with the false pretense of doing it “safely”? What active user will have the conscious responsibility to actually use drugs safely? Let’s be honest for a sec. “Avoid using alone and take turns. Start with a small dose and go slowly”?!? WTF. I have close family members and friends that have been cleaned/sobered for years and I can tell u they’d never agree with this.

Wow… this is what’s wrong with our country… let’s all talk about our safe spaces do as well… how about we empower a different way… show them all the good they can do when they are not on drugs. But hey, that would take too much effort. Wow. Looks like the country has just given up… it’s very sad.

I've seen these signs before. I don't love that the ultimate goal isn't cessation but I understand what they are doing and where they are coming from. It's a scaffolded approach; it can only be that much easier to see a life where you don't need drugs at all if you can actually get to the point where you can live with some normalcy again.

What you are describing is what we have been doing for many years with limited success. I'm sure this isn't for everyone but I am a fan of creative solutions for problems and if this gets some people off of drugs permanently then that's wonderful.
I'll withhold judgment on this until I see statistics on its success.

Personally I don't see how this could ever work. Perhaps none of you know drug addicts first hand but they are typically out of their mind and not thinking rationally or making any type of rational decision.

I watched a show last night on fentanyl and it's really scary how many people are dying from trying an unrelated drug for the first time. While I wish that more people would be able to stop, I understand that people are going to do it no matter what. At least there are safe places for people to do it and get help if they need it - no dirty needles to spread Hep C, no overdoses, etc.

The language in the ad is bothering me. Empowered is not the word to describe anyone who is addicted to anything. It's the complete opposite.
I have been through rehab stints with family and its really eye opening and sad what addicts endure. I'm all for doing whatever we can to help them get their life back on track and if it's through some sort of positive affirmation, safe weaning process, I can get behind that. I just do not care for that ad.

I agree with this. I don't think that "empowered" is the right word to use in the ad though. I would say the approach can work, but the wording needs revision.

ITA. I don’t believe mass incarceration is the way to solve out nation’s drug problem. But the language in this ad doesn’t sit right with me. Harm reduction does not equate to rehabilitation.

I lean very liberal and have a lot of compassion for those using drugs. That being said I can’t stand this. People already flock to NY because it’s so easy to get social assistance. Go right down to DSS and get your housing, food, and heat bill paid for. Maybe even a free cell phone! What’s next? Apply for assistance for your drug habit? Oh wait they already have that, it’s called the county methadone clinic. We really need to stop normalizing and enabling addiction as we are heading down the wrong really fast. Sadly I feel like it’s almost too late
