Tacky or not?

We are going to dinner with several couples this weekend. We have a gift card to the restaurant we are going to. Is it tacky to bring the gift card when we are splitting the bill with other people? I keep thinking it is but if one of them did that, I wouldn't think twice about it. What say you?

I don't see a problem especially if will get separate checks. Every time we go out to eat, with different sets of people, we all get separate checks as some drink more than others and it is just easier to figure out the bill that way.

Re: Tacky or not?

I don't think it's tacky. However, I would only use it if we had separate checks. If it was all one bill where we were splitting, I wouldn't personally. Only because it would seem like a hassle to me to explain and I know my DH would be embarrassed. He is one of those people who embarrasses easily, like second hand embarrassment from even watching someone on TV.Chat Icon

As long as your portion of the check is greater than or equal to the value of the gift card, then I think it would be OK. If the card had $100 on it and your meal came to $75, it might be awkward (not really tacky) to then take $25 chanage from the other people. But, if your portion came to $110, it's OK to put the $100 gift card and a $10 bill down. Either way, it's fine, just less awkward, IMO.

Re: Tacky or not?

It's money like anything else so I don't see any issue with it.
As long as it doesn't make things harder for everyone else or the server I don't think it's tacky

Oh yes another good point of the bill being under the GC value.

We are often in the same situation and we never do it and then we are stuck with a ton (and I mean a TON because it's the only thing my inlaws seem to ever give us) of gift cards that we have to use on lunch dates with each other. Like you, I wouldn't think anything of it if someone else did it but somehow it still makes me feel super awkward. We never ever get separate checks when we go out to eat. We always just throw in one CC per couple and split it evenly no matter who eats or drinks what.

I love my friends but I don't want to pay for their multiple expensive drinks or food that is way beyond what I order and it is actually their idea to do it this way.
My issue with gc's are the ones like the Visa ones that I have such a hard time using at many places as they won't accept them under a certain amount it seems.

I think that’s a better word, it’s not tacky but it can be awkward.

I think if you get separate checks it’s fine. We always split evenly when we go out with friends and if I had a gc I would apply it toward the total and split the rest. I’m not saying you HAVE to do that, but I do feel it would be awkward to use a gc (and potentially another cc depending on the amount) for a split check.

Did you specifically choose the restaurant because you had a GC for it? Only then might it be tacky, IMHO.
If it just so happened that another person in the group decided to go there and you happened to have the GC, then I wouldn't really think much of it.

I would only use it if you’re applying it to the total bill, so everyone will end up laying less. I wouldn’t use it if you’re all asking for separate checks. We always split the bill with friends when we go out, so the gc would be a nice treat for everyone..

We always split the bill evenly, but I think it's fine whether we split the bill or have separate bills. I agree though it would be ackward if you needed
Money " back "'from the amount of the gc. Also ackward if these are like brand new friends !

I tried using coupons. But it always ended up being coupons for products I didn't want or I had to buy 3 of something that I only needed two of. Eventually I gave up on the coupons altogether as I was spending way too much time to save like $3. I admire people who have the patience for it, but I am just not one of them. Don't get me wrong, I am all over the 20% BBB and I use Rakuten whenever I am shopping on line. It's just the coupon clipping from the Sunday fliers I can't handle.

I am talking about ones for restaurants and stuff like that too. Many coupons today are just not worth it and I use so much store brand stuff to save money that it is not even worth it (yes I have done the work and compared).

I go out to eat so many times a week at work and my colleagues and I use coupons and gift cards. If my friend uses a gift card and it’s more than my share I wouldn’t treat the situation any differently. I’d give them cash for my portion as if they had put it on their card and I was giving them cash. It’s all money either way…
