Spinoff of Showers and Invites
Especially during Covid. Has anyone got an invite to a shower but physically not invited? This is a baby shower but thought this was the weirdest thing. Basically buy me a gift and we don't have to pay for you to eat, drink, decorations, etc.

Re: Spinoff of Showers and Invites
Now that I think is tacky. If someone doesn't have a shower that I am close to I would most likely send a nicer gift after the baby is born than I normally would. But to ask for a gift and not throw the party is kind of wrong.

Spinoff of Showers and Invites
I know in the beginning a few friends were invited to drive by showers - for people they were close with and would buy a gift for anyway...

Re: Spinoff of Showers and Invites
The "invite" by text said they are throwing the parents a surprise baby shower. "We invite you to spread the love as we keep our distance. We ask you to send gifts to (address) or drop them off (by a certain date)."
Sorry but I call this a gift grab honestly. I know 2 years ago people would do the parades where the guest would sit outside and you would drive by and give the gift but not even that.

How is that "throwing a surprise baby shower" if there is no shower?
Is the SURPRISE that there is no shower?
OMG this is nutty.

That’s exactly what everyone said when I told them.

Spinoff of Showers and Invites
I just posted something similar on the other thread. It’s weird and gift grabby but STILL better than having to sit through a shower.

Actually I don’t mind getting out and seeing friends and family, eating, drinking. Once I even went to a baby shower that I only knew the mom to be and I surprisingly had a great time. I was scared as I thought I would be sitting there bored all alone but I got involved with the gifts and felt so comfortable.

That is the weirdest invite. I get if it says drive by shower but that is definitely a gift grab.

I agree. I enjoy going to parties and seeing my friends and family. Yes, it's boring to ooh and ahh over plates and pots and pans. But, getting together is fun. I never object to going to a bridal shower.

It truly is, especially since most, if not all, people who are celebrating something have gone back to doing so with others. Catering halls have lifted the mask and vaccinations and people are back to normal in that area.

Yes, the gifts can be boring, especially when you know what you are getting. Surprise ones are good though or sentimental ones.

Re: Spinoff of Showers and Invites
It is sort of like when you are invited to a shower far away & they know you aren't coming. But sometimes you do want to send a gift even if there was no shower, so I guess this is a way of saying, FYI, if you want to send something they are registered here. . . "
I did go to a weird baby shower recently, just due to a bunch of weird circumstances. The mom was high risk & it was at the height of Omicron & then baby ended up coming early, so he was in the NICU so the parents were very covid cautious. 2 of us went in person (after covid testing) and everyone else was virtual & it was kind of awkward. We didn't open the gifts that people sent. The other guest made a diaper cake, so I showed that off to the camera. Then she opened my gift after the cameras were off & we could actually talk.
I went to a small bridal shower last month & it was actually really nice because it had been so long since I had been to a party in a restaurant. She did open gifts, but some people sent the large things tuff to her home & she just read the card & thanked them & told us what they sent. That, and the fact that it was only 12 people made it go quickly.

Yeah this one is kind of like that but if you are near, you can't come either and celebrate lol. I went to a bridal shower a year ago so it's not like no one is doing them yet or haven't done them. If you choose to wear a mask, then I get it but it just seems very tacky and rude to ask for gifts but we don't want to host you.
Also, I find weird, they have NO big gifts on their registry. Mostly clothes and first aid stuff. Very odd as usually you put things like strollers, high chairs, car seats, bedding, towels, etc on a registry.
