Cashless Tolling Question

For those who don't have EZ Pass - are you just charged the toll when you go through or a fee?

Long story short, DH has an EZ pass for work and it was the one that was processed when he went through a toll not related to work and we are being charged a $50 fee on top of the toll. Just curious if it would've been cheaper if we had no EZ pass lol.

Thanks!

ETA - I've been on hold with EZ Pass for 1/2 an hour so I am trying to find this out but, I'm thinking I'll have to pick up DS at school at 2:30 before they answer.

Wait $50 fee?! No way. That's not right.

EZ Pass is charging you or work?

We don't have EZ Pass and the tolls are higher (some more than others) than if we had EZ Pass, but like $2 or so... not like there's an extra $50 fee.

ETA: Is it because you had the EZ Pass in your car? Our EZ Pass expired or something (I think because our payment info changed and we didn't update it) but the actual EZ Pass was still in the glove compartment. It tried to charge the EZ Pass and when it didn't work then we got a huge fee- maybe $50 or even $100 on top of the toll. Could it be something like that?

I believe if there is no EZ pass in the car it scans the license plate. If the plate is associated with an EZ pass, it’ll get charged to the account on file with EZ pass. If there is no EZ pass linked to the plates, the bill goes to whomever the car is registered to.

I don’t know how EZ pass would have known that the toll wasn’t work related?

The EZ Pass he has for work is just for the Triboro Bridge (or whatever it's called now lol) to get to Randalls Island.

I sent the form back with our real EZ Pass number and gave them permission to charge the toll to it and am checking to make sure that it's updated with the new plate info (we went from orange to white so the numbers changed). They definitely scanned the plate as we got a picture of the front of the car.

Ohhh that makes sense! They should be able to charge the new EZ pass.

As an aside, my dad had one of those orange EZ passes (also for the triboro) and I used his car once to go through the midtown tunnel and it scanned his EZ pass. You’d have thought I’d stolen the car and ran it into the east river. I never heard the end of it.

Lol - it's a pain... we have gotten letters in the past but never a violation.

Re: Cashless Tolling Question

We went out of state with my car and my car was not registered on DH's EZ Pass, I did get charged the fee- I had to call EZ Pass and let them know it is under DH"s account and we had to add the car on the EZ Pass site.

Re: Cashless Tolling Question

Sorry to crash this thread.
We are being driven to Newark airport in 2 weeks by a limo service. We have to pay for the tolls in cash the day of pick-up.
Can we just give the driver our EZ pass?

I think now they can read the plate... so if that is the case the driver is going to get a bill.

The driver prob has an EZ pass I would think - he just wants to be reimbursed in cash.
