Since this is the only active board - TRAVEL QUESTION (Italy)

We're planning our first trip to Italy for next year, likely Fall 2023. I would really love to go to northern Italy, specifically the Emilia-Romagna region (Parma/Modena/Bologna).

For those that have been to Italy, especially with kids, what are your favorite regions and where would you recommend visiting? At the time we go, my kids will be 15 and 10.

Thank you so much! Chat Icon

Re: Since this is the only active board - TRAVEL QUESTION (Italy)

That’s a tough question.

I have been to Emilia-Romagna and I loved it. I combined it with Venice and it was great for food (Italian Days Food Experience is fantastic). I’m not sure if it is any good for kids, though. Bologna has a nice hospital in case you need one, lol.

Venice is probably my favorite place in Italy. The first time sucked, but it gets better each and every time I go back. This might be good for kids.

Rome is great and there is so much to see. I think kids might like this.

Florence is nice, too and great for food. There is a lot of art to see, so not sure how much kids would like that.

I did Positano, Naples, and Pompeii. Pompeii is really interesting and kids might like this. Naples is a hole. But there is good food there. Capri is a nice relaxing island.

Not sure if you are interested in Alto Adige, but they have good ham and wine. I went once and I’m looking to go back there for my next vacation.

So I mainly go to Italy to eat and see history. I have no idea what’s good for kids after writing my reply, Chat Icon .

I think that the kids would like Venice although it was cool to see I liked other parts much better. And you would only need a couple days there. They would probably like the glass blowing factory tours.

I can’t wait to bring my kids to Pompeii. We did a private tour. It was worth every penny.

Capri is nice but not a lot to do for the kids.

I haven’t been to Rome but we would like to take our kids there as well. I am not familiar with the areas you mentioned.

That’s a big trip for the fall. Are you pulling them from school?

Thanks for the info!

We have that "Jersey Week" here in early November, the kids have 2-3 days of half days and no school on the others. I was thinking of going around that week so they don't miss much school and also so it won't be so hot over there. I'd rather not do Europe in the summer if I can help it.

Personally I would do it over the summer because it will take you a day to adjust to the time change. Even if you go Saturday to the following Sunday you will only have a week. And it’s a long ass flight. Unless you are springing for business class so that you can get a decent sleep on the plane ride.

I was thinking of adding a few days to that Jersey week. We'll see. I'm hesitant to do summer mostly because I detest the heat and Europe isn't known for a lot of A/C in places. Chat Icon lol

I second Pompeii! That was everyone’s favorite stop when we did the cruise. Granted you only see a glimpse of Italy when doing the cruise but Rome was our least favorite. It was too congested and so hot. It happened to be one of the craziest heat waves they seen in 20 years. So we were all miserable in Rome.

We went in September and had no issues with AC but it did just come to our attention that a couple hotels we booked for our trip to Ireland this summer don’t have AC so now we have to rebook!

I've always dreamed of seeing Pompeii. My parents went years and years ago and STILL talk about it. They thought it was an incredible experience.

It really is incredible but like I said earlier, definitely get a private guide. It is so worth it. We went when we were staying in positano thou which I feel is not really as kid friendly. But we also did a private cooking lesson with a chef in ravello (sp?) and that was amazing too and I feel like would be great for kids. Honestly though it really depends how long you are going for. If you want to do northern Italy and Venice maybe just focus on that for this trip and then do Rome and Pompeii another time. You don’t want to feel completely rushed. Also the amalfi coast is definitely better in the summer since it’s all beach towns. In November it will be cold so really not a great time to go there.

Also, if your daughter will be 15 it might be harder to pull her out of school for vacation. My son is in 8th but he takes AP science and tenth grade math and I can’t pull him anymore. It’s really frowned upon and if it’s an unexcused absence and they don’t let them make missed quizzes, tests, homework etc.

Thanks for all the great info. I appreciate it. A cooking lesson in Italy would be amazing!!!........ right up my alley!!

We'll definitely have to figure things out with my DD's school schedule, she definitely won't be able to miss much school (if any). She will have a heavy workload in HS, she's taking all honors level courses and the attendance policy is pretty strict at the HS. Might end up having to do summer even though I don't want to but you're right, I definitely don't want to rush through the experience. We'll see. Chat Icon

I will tell you that everyone still talks about it till this day and the kids were 15 and 2 - 11 yr. olds at the time.

My cousin who is in the Navy had a friend stationed there and we even enjoyed walking around the area. There was an old castle museum with a lot of cool art. Crossing the streets was a little scary. lol.

We weren’t able to get a private tour which I’m sure is a game changer. I think the congestion was too much, the reason I hate and don’t do theme parks. My cousin paid an astronomical fee to fast pass her way into the Vatican and it was so packed that she ended up being escorted out through an emergency exit because she was having a panic attack. She said she felt like she was being herded like cattle and it was too hot. She’s claustrophobic as well. I was bummed because I really wanted to see the Vatican. I am willing to do Rome again but in September not June. lol.

I know the OP asked for Italy but I will say for anyone planning a trip to Europe and can swing it, do Portugal. It was amazing. We stayed in the Algarve region.

We are doing Ireland and England this summer for 4 weeks. We started to plan Spain/Portugal/Morocco but we felt this was a better Segway into Europe. Not a long flight, not a bad time change and English speaking. Even thou we spent a month in Costa Rica and the language issue was no prob. Definitely want to do Spain, Italy and Greece before my son graduates high school.

Yes, I second a private tour. I was also staying in Positano for the week. That place is definitely not kid friendly with all the stairs—it’s not even people friendly with those stairs Chat Icon . Sorrento is a nice place to base yourself as it’s flat. Naples is NOT a good place to stay. Only go there if you absolutely have to. Very good sfgiotell (spelling?) and pizza, though.

I did a full day private tour with Pompeii in the morning, lunch at a local winery (wines taste different because of the soil from Vesuvius), and then I climbed up Vesuvius in the afternoon. I normally don’t do private tours, but this was a special occasion and it was worth every cent.

I have to admit I wasn’t crazy about the food in Southern Italy. I prefer the food in Northern Italy more. I mean it was good, but it wasn’t anything too new to me.

If you do decide to go in summer, don’t do August because a lot of things are closed. Italy is one of the better countries for A/C, but still it doesn’t compare to the US with regards to A/C.

May is a very nice time to go and this year there aren’t too many Catholic holidays in May since Easter is late this year.

June and July are packed.

We did Ireland with my kids and had an amazing trip. It was very beautiful. I would highly recommend hiring a private driver to take you through the Ring of Kerry.

I went on a cruise too. We had a private tour guide in Rome, which was nice. We did that so we could see more in 1 day. We didn't see much of modern Rome, we did the Colliseum & the Vatican. I had a fever & almost passed out, but it was still good. I didn't like Naples itself, but from there we went to Vesuvius & Pompeii, which I think would be good for older kids.

Yes someone told me that it is scary to drive it yourself so we will probably go that route!
