I can't read either but I am glad all of this is causing people to question these mandates more.

Re: Opinion piece on covid vaccine mandates

It's interesting how Omicron is shifting the foundation of the argument for mandates.
If the findings of Omicron from the Denmark and Canadian study can substantiated...the Federal mandate won't have any legal legs.

I can't read it either because you need a subscription. But, from the headline, I agree. I feel you can only mandate a vaccine if it's protecting society at large by preventing transmission. But, if I can get Covid and spread it to others, even if vaccinated, then what's the point of mandating it? It's like mandating vitamins. Yes, a vitamin helps the individual to be healthy, but it doesn't affect anyone else!

I always said its like mandating a colonoscopy.
You should get your colonoscopy.
It's a good tool to protect you.
But why does anyone else care if you get it or not.
It certainly is not something you'd mandate.

That is basically what the opinion is. That for the federal mandate to hold up - they need to show that the mandate outweighs the rights ofindividuals. With the first wave of CoVid; the studies were showing that being vaccinated helped stop the spread. Omicron variant throws a wrench in the Feds argument because being vaccinated does not help the spread so there is no administrative level or basis for a Federal mandate. This Omicron variant basically guts the Feds argument for a mandate.

The article didn't seem to be for or against the mandates...just that this new variant makes the Feds argument moot.

Opinion piece on covid vaccine mandates

I was never in favor of mandates but now with omicron I feel even more strongly about it. It's just stupid at this point. I have my vaccine, my booster, and antibodies as I just recovered from COVID- my 10 days was up last Thursday. I'm all set now for at least a year.
My DH is fully vaccinated but did not get the booster. He tested positive on Saturday and will be in quarantine until Monday. His job wants him up get the booster Tuesday in order to return to work. I can't anymore lol.

I'm never getting a colonoscopy-- a friend's sister went to get one the week of christmas (per doctor's orders), during the procedure, they tore her intestine. She needed emergency surgery to repair becuase she was getting septic. Ended up in ICU with a colostomy bag on Christmas eve. Starts not feeling well, demands a covid test- positive (which she had to test negative for in order to get the damn colonoscopy). So, she's got covid and is recovering from surgery in the hospital...doesn't feel well, pain in shoulder, they are running tests, not sure what's wrong with her...I attended her funeral last week.
Sooo, to me this is like "get the vaccine or die" (but also, the vaccine might kill you).
And I know this is extreme and there are also other factors, but I have literally done a 180 in my thinking bc the whole world has gone crazy.
thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Omicron has also changed my feelings about vaccine mandates. I was originally in favor of vaccine mandates in a number of situations (though not all).

I have never personally cared about whether the person next to me was vaccinated or not (i.e., it did not matter to me if the people I was with were vaccinated or not), but I originally felt that mandates (again, not in all situations) could help to bring an end to all of this chaos, but they have not...so, my thoughts have changed.

I do not think a sweeping one-size-fits-all vaccine mandate is the answer. We need to be able to make choices for ourselves regarding vaccines, masks, etc.; businesses need to be able to make choices for themselves regarding requirements for entry; etc. As someone who is high-risk, I will continue getting a booster as necessary, since we do have clear evidence that the vaccine protects, in most cases, against severe illness and death. That is a decision that impacts me and me alone, and is my responsibility alone, not someone else's.

This is what I’ve saying all along. Mandates don’t work and can’t work. I’m glad that everyday I keep reading more and more comments like urs.

OMG! I am so sorry for your loss!

Omicron has definitely softened my opinion about the vaccine because it genuinely doesn't seem to stop the spread. However, I am withholding doing a full 180 on my opinion like others have for now. I want to see what the next variant looks like. There was evidence that the vaccine was effective in stopping the spread initially. Variants don't always automatically get weaker. I certainly hope they continue to do so and this can be treated like any other illness. I am not sure that we are there yet. I certainly hope we are.

But as of right now there is still an argument to be made that it is still in the interests of public health to promote the vaccine so society can minimize death and hospitalizations. The numbers make it clear that Covid is a much more mild experience for the vaccinated. I know some people on here like to deny that but right now that's still the case. When and if the numbers change then my opinion will change. But right now it's still clear it makes sense for everyone who can to get vaccinated. Large numbers of people getting severely sick does in fact impact people other than them.

I think we need the mask mandates almost more than ever considering how virulent Omicron is. It's clear they work. Hopefully it'll settle down into just being a winter thing. It was nice to ditch the mask last year when weather was milder and things were looking up. Hopefully we can get back to that.

Opinion piece on covid vaccine mandates

It's over. People just need to accept it and move on. If you want the vaccination and boosters do so (just like the flu shot) and if you want to wear masks, that is your choice. There is no reason for mandates anymore as they are not working. My entire family just had Covid and we are all vaccinated and my husband boostered. Almost every single person I know has someone in their household who has or just had Covid. All of them are vaccinated and are mask wearers. It is literally a joke right now. Yes I know some people are dying and people are going to the hospital but they do that with other illnesses as well. Did you see the new state quarantining rules for school. Now they are taking away close contacts and you can go to school if you were exposed and vaccinated but you can not go to afterschool activities. We all know that Covid starts spreading at 3:30 pm. It's all ridiculous now. They should be taking all this money and time that being wasted on useless vaccinations and put it towards treatment, which I can't believe we do not have after almost 2 years of this crap.

You know, I do not regret getting the vaccine (although my husband does since he had a stroke after it). And I support people getting vaccines and boosters if they so choose. But the vaccine mandates have to stop. They need to look into reformulating the vaccine or something to include other strains. It's getting scary again- I am seeing more deaths and everyone had covid when they died- with other factors, but the fact remains that covid is what ended up getting them sick enough to die. I have seen too many deaths (6 in 2022!!) from poeple dying related to covid. if the vaccine can help prevent that, I am all for it. But I don't think the current vaccine is the answer.
The mask mandates need to be enforced for sure.

Hopefully we can get back to that.

edited for typo

I think if the masks worked though, so many would not be sick. Many don't get together with others so they must be getting it when they go out with their masks on.

I agree! I am also going through the same as you with Covid. It is running rampant in our house and family. I feel like I’m like in day 100 of trying to isolate.

My son was exposed on the 20th.,he has a runny nose on the 25th. Then I heard a cough on Monday. My cousins husband came to visit it us for a few hours during his lay over from FL that Tuesday. He is super strict because he is a contractor for the military in the Middle East and needs to follow all the rules to visit his family. He tested in FL before coming to Nj (negative). Had his booster shot. Gets to the ME and tested positive on Wednesday. I do a rapid on the 30th for my son he is positive. 4 days later his my cousins daughter tested positive. So we know my cousins husband got it in FL. However, We aren’t sure if my son had and its a coincidence or if he got it from my cousin. Fine. We moved into a two family the 30th where my sister lives downstairs. New Year’s Day she is sick. Sounds like crap. Has all the symptoms my friend had (the nurse). She test with the rapid, negative. I don’t believe it. Literally yesterday my BIL tested positive. Now this is two weeks from when my son had it and a week after my sister was sick. She is negative still. She swears he didn’t get it from her. We thinks she’s in denial. Lol.

Everyone in this story is vaccinated except my son and follow the rules and still got Covid. Technically my nieces can go to school because they are vaccinated which makes no sense. My sister had the kids staying home this week anyway.

Also my younger niece has had 2 close contact exposures from school but can still go untested according to the rules. It just doesn’t make sense at this point and is still spreading.

And I’m not saying the vaccine doesn’t make sense, it’s the mandates and the restrictions that are doing diddly squat. Also the rapid tests are the most unpredictable test ever when it comes to negative results.

Yes this. Time to hop off the hamster wheel. I will also add that there ARE treatments but doctors are being pressured to suppress them.
