Mask when sick
Not just covid. Sick in general.
I’m wondering how everyone feels about wearing a mask when going to work or school when you feel a little under the weather? Just to try and spare those around you.
Personally, I think we are going to take this approach going forward. I couldn’t tell you how many colds, 1 case of coxsackie, 1 flu and a bunch of covid + exposure we have avoided catching at work with everyone in masks and extra cleaning throughout the day.
When the days of “you coughed, you’ve got the vid” are behind us, if I have a cold, I’ll throw my mask on at work to try and stop from spreading it around.

I agree. Just for the reasons you listed, I think we will be seeing a lot more masking in the future. I'm glad to hear a lot of people feel this way.

Mask when sick
My question is if your not exposed to colds and common illnesses, how does that affect your immunity? I feel like my daughter who is 6 has had more common colds this year because she is not being exposed to germs and her immunity is compromised because of it. She eats very well and takes vitamins and natural immunity boosters but i think the body needs exposure to things to build a natural immunity.

Ehh I don’t know if it necessary but if that’s the compromise do not have to wear them all the time I would do it.
But I will say it drives me up a freaking wall when people do not cover their mouth when wearing a mask you should still cover your mouth!!! That would be a reason why I wouldn’t to continue mass because people think they can just cough and not cover their mouthsd

I don’t think masks would be the solution. When sick, the body needs rest to be able to heal and recuperate faster. Conserving energy is imperative so we can allow the body to be able to fight whatever it is it’s fighting against. But when we keep pushing the body to its limit like when working, it will take longer to recover. I think more jobs should make it easier for people to get sick days and provide even more days. Maybe I think this way because I come from a country where “siesta” is still observed in many areas and where lunch hours are a good 1 1/2 to 2 hrs? I know allowing more paid sick days is almost impossible in a county where the mentality is work, work, work, being busy all day time, where there needs to be more hours in the day so we can work even more but this would work against us when we’re sick, when all we should be doing is rest so we can heal. Hopefully covid can help us understand why this is so important.

I have this question too. When I was a kid, my mom cleaned compulsively. I'm not exaggerating when I say our house was as close to sterile as possible. I was sick all of the time with colds and coughs. As soon as I moved out when I was 24, the constant sickness stopped.
Obviously, this is simply anecdotal, but it sticks in my mind.
As another poster said above, I think we need a work culture that is more accommodating when it comes to sick days as well.

I agree that you need to be exposed to germs.
I commuted into the city for years and only got really sick 2x. I was let go in the spring and once the winter hit - I got so sick after volunteering at the kids school after not being exposed to as many germs.

I agree with more flexible sick leave and now that everyone sees that they can work from home, you should work home if you are coming down with something or sick but well enough to work.
Of course, not all jobs CAN be done remotely, but for the office jobs, that should be the first priority.
And yes, I do agree that you need exposure. OMG when DD first started daycare she was sick ALL THE TIME. And so was I.
But once she got to Kindergarten she was never sick. I can count on one hand how many times she has been out sick from school in the entire time she's been in school and she's in 6th grade now.
I myself am also never sick and I have sat on trains with the entire car hacking then got to the office and was sitting knee to knee with a coworker who was hacking up a lung and caught nothing.
My friends who's kids did not go to day care had all that sickness when they started Kindergarten and got exposed there.
Exposure is important. Things like a common cold are ok to get once in awhile. It's not great, it sucks feeling crappy but it's not going to kill you either.

Agreed. More people will just go out sick thinking, well I can just wear a mask and I will be fine. Companies know that they will come to work so why bother giving them extra days to stay home.

Yep. Kids either get sick the first year in daycare or the first year they go to school. You need to build your immunity up and hiding out away from people or under a mask is not going to help that at all.

ITA. Instead of mandating this vaccine they should be mandating things like paid sick leave so sick people don't infect everyone else by going to work because they can't afford to stay home. When fighting an illness the body needs rest - a radical and foreign concept in this country.

U both have a very valid point. For some reason, germs are always labeled as the biggest enemy and therefore should be erased from the face of the earth at all cost, every single one of them when that shouldn’t be the case. Germs exist within us and around us but we keep killing everything all the time like in the case of antibacterials and antibiotics, we are not only killing the “good” germs that are needed to help us fight off the “bad” ones but also we’re not allowing our immune system to do what it’s intended to do. So if the body is not exposed to a strain of a cold virus for example, or a bacteria, or another pathogen, how is it gonna overcome it and how are memory cells gonna remember a specific pathogen if never exposed to it?

I remember years ago I was at an urgent care for something- maybe strep? Maybe a sinus infection? But something like that. I was feeling like crap but of course was there on my lunch hour because I had to work. The Dr said, ok so I called you in a script, drink fluids, take motrin and ...I know nobody can really do this anymore and I feel silly even saying it, but Rest too.
Isn't is sad that that is how our country has become.

If you have to be out and about while sick and need to be near people I think it makes a lot of sense. It's been lovely the last two years to not get my annual nasty ass sinus infection.
ITA about paid sick leave as well.
My understanding is that the immunity thing is true for children but not for adults. I actually think I read that from someone on here who described why or maybe posted an article. But I am not 100% on who it was and I don't want to put anyone on the spot lol.

I think the answer is revamping the sick day policies at all jobs and schools. If you are sick then stay home. That is how it always should have been.
If someone wants to wear a mask then that's fine if it makes them more comfortable but there is really no need to wear one anymore.

If your immune system is low, you have a better chance of getting sick. So any germs that might be around could affect you.
Most illnesses don’t need 5 days to take off. The only time I did this was with pneumonia and I used my time. If not you don’t get paid.

Yes. It really needs to be hashed out what the laws would be etc. but most people do not need to be home for 5 days for a cold. If you are truly sick then you should be home regardless. I know plenty of people who never take off work and make themselves sicker. If people learned to stay home for day or two, see their doctor and rest, It would be better for all. For me personally, it has nothing to do with exposure or infection but keeping yourself healthy. I don't think anyone should be quarantine for Covid. It is useless because most of the people are walking around infecting people before they even know they are sick and it's a false sense of protection.

My Japanese coworker has been wearing a mask whenever she feels she might be getting ill for as long as I’ve known her (10+ years) and said in Japan everyone does it. She’s always disgusted by people coughing and blowing their noses at their desks.

I think if people want to wear the mask go ahead it will keep you safe. For people that don't feel its necessary should not be made to wear one. I believe in natural immunity and allowing our bodies to do what they were made to do.

I must be in the minority because I think masks are a godsend
I joke, but in reality, I appreciate not being sneezed on by random strangers.
I hope that wearing masks when people don’t feel 100% becomes more commonplace.

I'm a big fan of masks when sick and I hope it becomes the norm and even a policy at work. We've all had bad colds where you take 1 or 2 days off, but no one is staying home for a week because of a cold. So you come back on day 3 and you're still snorting and sniffling. That's fine if you have your own office or workspace, but if you're sharing a computer/register/phone, etc, it would be very considerate to your coworkers to wear a mask.

From this point on, I plan on masking every flu season. Especially when in crowded indoor places.
I don't trust people to stay home when they're sick.
