WWYD in this situation?

DH and I had to attend a wedding where my boss owns a vacation home. He very graciously offered us to stay there for the weekend. He encouraged us to bring the kids and make it a 3 day weekend. We did and it was really nice. The agreement was that we would pay for the cleaning service to come the following week. Sounds like a deal to me!

Side note: When we got to the house, one of the bathroom trash cans was filled with perishables so there was a bunch of fruit flies. It was no big deal and we just tossed it but before we threw it out, I sent a pic to my boss because at the top of the garbage was a cup full of jewelry. I wanted to make sure it was meant to be in the trash and not accidentally knocked in before we threw it out. I sent a pic so he could show his wife and daughters to make sure there was nothing of importance in the cup.

Since we returned, I have been asking him to let me know what I owe him for the cleaning service but he either ignores me or brushes me off. I don't know if he feels bad that we had to deal with the fruit fly situation (obviously the cleaning service hadn't been there before us) but it was not a big deal at all and we really had a nice weekend at his home. I was so appreciative that he let us use the house.

Do I keep hounding him? Do I get him a gift? If I get a gift, what do I get? He and his wife do not really drink and he doesn't like to go out to eat. Should I get them a gift for their vacation home? How much should I spend? WWYD?

Maybe get them a gift basket with a bunch of edible goodies in it with a note saying how much you loved you stay and that this is a thank you gift for the time you spent there.

Yes, this - I would spend about $150.

I agree, maybe add a bottle of wine in the basket!

I guess I would wait about a week longer (without asking him) and see if he gives me a cost. If not, then I would do what other posters said and send a gift basket to the vacation home to arrive at a time when you know they'll be there, if possible.

But, what happened with the jewelry? Did they want it thrown out? That's kind of weird.

don't hound him. I think maybe even let it go. A nice card ( I'm big on cards). Also, if you buy a gift I don't believe the amount spent has to be a certain amount.

A houseplant or flowers and a nice handwritten note.

He told me to take it out and wear it to the weddingChat Icon

He has daughters in their 20's so my guess it was either theirs or their friends and it was junk. It looked like fake gold costume jewelry but I was not about to make that call without an okay.

Re: WWYD in this situation?

I think if you asked on more than one occasion I would just let it go.

It was very nice that he offered you the space to use and that your family was able to enjoy it.

I would not send anything.

Re: WWYD in this situation?

I bet he didn’t realize it wasn’t already cleaned before you got there and is now a little embarrassed. If you asked twice I would just let it go. It would be awkward for him to ask you to pay for a cleaning service when it wasn’t already clean before you got there. You can send a nice gift basket but I don’t think you necessarily need to.

Re: WWYD in this situation?

I'm surprised with the people who say that you don't need to send anything. We have had guests stay at our properties before. They usually offer to pay for cleaning and I let them because it's about $120-$150 and frankly I am already doing them a favor, I don't think I need to also spend $120 so that someone else can use my condo. KWIM?

I would say in addition to paying for cleaning, about half of our guests get us a gift. We have gotten wine, gift cards to local restaurants, beach towels, monogrammed glasses, etc. I am always very appreciative of these gifts and while I think that the gift is not necessary, I do always really enjoy getting them. Whenever I am staying at a friends vacation home, even as a guest while they are there, I bring them some type of gift in addition to wine and food. And again, while it's not necessary I do find that people really appreciate it and it's fun to give them something they can enjoy.

You have nothing at all to lose by sending them something so that is the route I would go.
