This summer we had to buy a new car. Some dealers only had one car, as in the one we test drove. The Acura dealer had 36 cars for all vehicles within their set of dealers for all of the kinds of cars spread over three dealerships.

When we got our head we were told we got lucky. It was the only one in the state. There absolutely are shortages.

We needed a car immediately last month and 3 dealerships I called had no cars. None! I started going down a list and took the first car that was in stock. When I say the first car, I mean literally the first car. I had to double check what kind of car it was AFTER I said we’d take it.

It was utterly bizarre.

This is in NY? My lease is up soon and I need to get something new. I have an idea of what I want, just need to go and sit down and go through all of that car stuff. Hopefully it is not too much of a big deal.

Yes everywhere. My lease was up last month. I ended up having to buy my car off lease. There were no cars at all. And the ones they would order or try to get were so expensive my lease payment would have been more than double. The sales guy took me aside and pretty much said, you didn't hear this from me, but you should just buy the car you're returning. It had crazy low mileage. He said I probably won't be able to get you anything anytime soon and the cars that come in are selling for over sticker.
The car shortage has been a nationwide issue for months now

Yeah I heard about the shortage but didn't think it was that bad. I am getting things all the time in the mail and email about getting a new car so I am figuring these places do have inventory. We will probably so this weekend just to get an idea as I do not want to go over what I pay now and have an idea of what I want (not what I REALLY want but what I can afford) so I figured it would be easy for the dealer.

Oh yes I was getting that too.
And even after i bought the car someone from the dealer who didn't realize called me up asking me if I wanted to "turn in my lease and upgrade". I said to her, well funny story, I was just there today and bought my car off lease because you guys had NO inventory at all. So let me ask you this- what did you have in mind for me to "upgrade" to? She got real quiet.
They can get you cars but it will take a while and the prices are astronomical.
He quote me over double the lease payment for the same car I had. I know the prices of cars rise every 3 years so when I turn in my lease I do expect to pay a bit more, but not double.

Yeah that is insane. I honestly don't want my car as I like getting a new car every 3 years and doing minimal maintenance to it. I would even take last years model if they have it so that might have to be an option.

I wanted a new one too, that's actually the reason I started leasing, but there was no way I was paying what they wanted to just have the new model of my car. I love the car and really just wanted a new one of the same car.
I only had 16K miles on it- thanks to not being allowed to go to work for almost 2 years I barely use it- so it was a no brainer to keep it.

Buying off lease isn't normally a good financial idea either, but these definitely aren't normal times. I'm just glad to have a car right now

Yeah you made the right decision. Just an FYI there is nothing wrong with buying a car off lease and paying CASH for it, assuming the car's value is worth at least what the buyout is. That's actually a good decision because you are buying a car you know the history of at a better than market rate. If you had an accident or a mark on the carfax then I wouldn't do it because diminished value comes into play.

It's generally not a good financial decision to finance / take out a used car loan on a lease buyout. The reason is you already paid higher than normal interest on the first three or so years on the lease. Because of that it's generally not a good idea to continue paying more interest on a used car loan.

There are exceptions as in this market if the car's value is way over the buyout even with the added interest you are still making out on the deal. But something to keep in mind.

I guess if we all had cash to buy a car we wouldn't have any issues with getting anything. Chat Icon

Last year's model cars are going first now because that the only place where you may get a tiny bit of savings. The dealer would LOVE to have your lease back because there is probably at least 8-10k of buyout equity in it. By trading it in you are basically paying them that money with nothing to show for it. Anybody that is returning a car that's 3 year off a lease (bought pre pandemic) is lighting money on fire. Don't just assume because the lease is up you don't have options.

If anything you need to go into the dealer and tell them "I know my buyout is 20k and I know the DEALER trade in value of my car is 29k". If you want to sell your new car for 60k, give me your best price and then take off another 9k to account for the difference in my lease trade in. So if their normal best price is MSRP, at least you can get them to take something decent off the MSRP.
Some dealers may balk, but a smart dealer will realize that you know your stuff and can still make money on the deal.

I'm hiring you to negiotiate my next new car!

Two of my friends sold their cars because they got such great buyback offers and became one car households. They are both now regretting it as they are trying to find a car, but they are having no luck.

We’ve only replaced one car so far because the prices are so insane but I’m not sure how much longer we can hold out (and it’s only been 6 weeks!). Weekdays are ok but the weekends are miserable.

We sold a piece of crap 2008 Acura for $7k last month. It was falling apart although the mileage was relatively low for it's age. We paid sticker price for a VW Atlas Crossover and we were told we were getting a good deal.

I paid cash but it was the lease buy out - it wasn't full price of a new car.
Honestly it was a great deal too because we went on Carvana and if I sold my car today to them, I'd actually make a profit because they were basing that pay off amount on a car with 36 K miles on it and I had less than half that. And the prices are so high right now because there are no cars.
But even though I don't drive much anymore, I still want my own car. I don't like feeling trapped if DH were out all day.

we got 2600 for a 17 year old Toyota Corolla with 110,000 miles. When I bought it brand new for $13,000 17 years ago. That seems insane to me. I was very fortunate to get the car we wanted in the color we had as our first choice. They had one, we were able to get it. My in laws car was destroyed by IDA. The Toyota dealer in Roslyn had 13 cars on the lot for two dealerships. We called five. Other dealers who all told us we could special order a car.

Yeah it's crazy! Great that you got so much. We paid $35k for the Acura 13 years ago so it wasn't too bad. I thought we were going to get like $4k but we definitely overpaid for the Atlas. My Atlas was only $2k more a couple years ago and it's the full size, top of the line Atlas.

Pretty much however the cars are going so much over the lease buyout in most cases so you are better off buying the car and selling it. Or keeping it.

Re: Toy shortages

Has anyone checked out Enterprise car sales? They sell off their 1 to 3 year old rental cars (and a few older cars). I bought my current truck from them about 3 years ago. I'll be going back to them whenever DW's 10 year old minivan needs replacing.

https://www.enterprisecarsales.com/list/buy-a-car/#

Of course, they are all used cars, and rentals, but they do have warrantees on them. And, if cars are impossible to get, this could be a good option for a lot of people.

Yeah this. You have to check if the value is higher than the buyout (probably yes). Then you have to buy the car out somehow (either cash or finance). Don't return it and pay the mile fees. Go on Carvana and see what their offer is. I heard Carvana can handle the lease buyout paperwork for you and cut you a check for the excess profit (haven't tried it myself yet).

Thanks. I think I will start with going to the original dealer. I am willing to go with another type of car too if I have to. I would have to finance as I don't even put money down to get a car. Sounds like all one big hassle honestly.

We got a quote from autodealer and then you can sell it to them or get quotes from dealers. We brought it to a dealer and they gave us the quote. We could have negotiated but for a couple hundred dollars it wasn't worth it.

Thanks. I plan to lease again and not buy and of course my credit is much better this time around so hoping I would find something with more bells and whistles for less or the same amount of money. Doesn't sound like it. I might have to contact some of my friends who work in dealerships to see what they have in inventory also. Not my first choice of car with them though. I am sure it will all work out in the end though Chat Icon

This is not necessarily true. The manufacturer I work for has stopped allowing anyone other than their dealers to purchase their off leases right now for this exact reason. Many others are following suit.

Not sure about the lease stuff but I have to say I purchased my last car from Carvana and it was such an amazingly smooth transaction. I will never ever go to a dealership againChat Icon

Re: Toy shortages

as far as the original question... (since i haven't bought a car in a while and am not in the market for a new one)...

i just finished ALL of my toy shopping for christmas. i have a disney chase visa and i had a lot of disney dollars on it. so i bought everyone under 15 their gift from the disney store.

everyone else will get a gift card.

as far as shortages... i believe there will be quite a bit of shortages as we get closer to the holidays. at work, i ordered walkie-talkies for our managers back in may... they still haven't arrived. i also ordered batteries for some of the equipment we use back in march... they still haven't arrived.

the part that i find crazy is that the port of los angeles and long beach are JUST NOW going to start running 24/7! how is that only now a thing??? that's crazy!!

Pretty much however the cars are going so much over the lease buyout in most cases so you are better off buying the car and selling it. Or keeping it.

This is not necessarily true. The manufacturer I work for has stopped allowing anyone other than their dealers to purchase their off leases right now for this exact reason. Many others are following suit.

The buyers would still have the option to execute their buy out themselves and then sell to Carvana or whoever they want right afterwards. You can get a same day auto loan with some banks, buy the car and then just pay off the loan right away.
And most states have laws where if you flip the car within a few days you don't even pay the sales tax on the buyout.

These dealers you mention are just preventing the direct transfer from the dealer's financing company to the third party. And even so if you wanted to buy a new car with the same manufacturer you can just take the lease to a bunch of dealers and see which one will give you the most positive equity to apply towards a new car. One will bite.

You can ask for extension for up to 6 months on some companies. After the lease is up, the extension months you have to factor in taxes on the monthly payment.
