Southwest Airlines
Apparently there were tons of cancellations and stranded passengers. They are blaming it on air traffic control issues and weather. But from what I’m reading employees walked off to protest the vaccine mandate. Has anyone heard anything about this?? Hoping this gets resolved soon since we have an upcoming flight with them!!

Although the media generally is not reporting on this because it makes Biden look bad, from what I understand the air traffic controllers are striking due to the injection mandates.
I do feel terrible for the passengers that are affected but honestly if this is true, good for them for standing up for these ridiculous violations of bodily autonomy.

I just asked my brother who is a pilot. He did not know specifically about Southwest but said ATC in Jacksonville walked off the job last night. He said it is going to happen because there are too many people who do not want the mandate.

I'm willing to sacrifice flying for the next YEAR if it means reversing this insanity.
It will be WELL worth it.
Perhaps they can bring in the national guard to fly planes and deal with air traffic control like they are doing in hospitals.

I’ve been following as I’m supposed to fly them next weekend lol.
They were just told late last week that they have to be vaccinated by 12/8 because Southwest has government contracts and the government mandates all company employees be vaccinated.

Supposed air traffic controllers in FL did a walkout in response to the mandates. Good for them and I hope they keep standing up against these mandates.

I follow a number of airline communities and there is some misinformation in this thread.
The Jacksonville FAA "walkout" due to vaccine mandates is way overstated. If the Jacksonville center did an actual walkout, it would cripple air travel across the board. Basically any planes traveling to Florida or even Caribbean or points south from the northeast or midwest have to travel through the Jacksonville center. Southwest is the only airline having this issue. If Jacksonville was truly out, every airline could have massive delays. Did one particular ATC location have shortages? Yes. But it wasn't as much as you would think.
When Southwest tried to blame ATC, FAA and other things, the FAA actually released a statement saying that it WASN'T the FAA's fault. The FAA usually sides with the carriers whenever there is an issue, so this particular reversal of them saying "not us" basically throws Southwest under the bus. This backs up my point about the Jacksonville Center walkouts. Since there was no real issue in Jacksonville, the FAA is not going to take the hit on this and they actually called out Southwest for not managing its personnel properly.
The issue is solely with Southwest and it's employees/unions. They are having massive amounts of people not showing up for work. Are some people sitting out due to vaccine mandates? Sure maybe. But it's also possible that many pilots and employees were waiting until the last minute to get vaccinated and that deadline was this weekend. When you get vaccinated, it's required you take 48 hours of sick rest. Southwest runs a very lean workforce, they don't have pilots and FAs just "sitting around" as backups. If you have 10 or even 20% of your workforce go on mandatory sick leave due to getting vaccines, that is going to cripple their schedule.
I am sure this is not the reason many anti-vaxers want to hear as they want Southwest to "take a stand", but this is likely the case and you will probably see these issues disappear in a day or two. And if they don't get vaccinated and continue to sit out, Southwest has a waiting list of people waiting in the wings to work for Southwest.
