I suspect that the kids who are doing this stuff are being encouraged by their parents in some ways. People are angry. The adults are threatening people at meetings and even bullying teen speakers. Right here on LI. Mad about CRT, DEI, masks, possible mandates.

I’m not talking about the people here who are understandably worried… I’m talking about the people who are irrational. I don’t suspect anyone here is radical in their feelings.

All of that stuff filters down. Kids are aware. Their own parents won’t respect the school, the administration, the teachers… Why would they?they then have carte blanche to do whatever they want with their parents blessing and/or encouragement.

What I have seen watching countless meetings across the island has been vile and eye opening. There is zero doubt in my mind that doesn’t influence kids of these parents.

Do you know if any of these kids who are doing these things are from the parents from those meetings?
That sounds like a huge assumption and kids, especially older don't always, and usually not if they are a teen, do exactly and believe exactly as their parents do.

Don’t think being a good parent has to do with anything. You can be the best parent in the world and still have shit kids who are up to no good. Also, your child can be the most well behaved kid at home and school but be up to no good when hanging with their friends. DL bad kid (I’m a good example lol)

Huh? Chat Icon Chat Icon

I wholeheartedly disagree with you, parenting ALWAYS matters. If it didn't, we would just birth our kids, leave them be and let the cards fall where they may.

Good parenting doesn't mean kids still won't do stupid cr@p on occasion or that a kid might get into some trouble but to say parenting has nothing to do with this is crazy.

Good, solid parenting is critical to a child's growth and development. It's our job as parents to raise kind humans who grow up to be a productive part of society as opposed to being the problem in it. That doesn't happen without guidance and parenting.

The old saying, "the apple doesn't fall from the tree" holds true.

While I did some dumb stuff such as cutting class or sneaking out I would NEVER, EVER have done anything where I exposed myself, touched someone else inappropriately, vandalized school property or hurt anyone else. Why? Because I was raised better than that and knew I'd have to answer to my parents who wouldn't tolerate that kind of behavior.

Social media is truly the downfall of our society. Kids today have way too much access to really stupid ideas and an overwhelming pressure to try and be as "cool and popular" on social media as possible even if it means doing dumb (sometimes dangerous) things. It is so sad. I miss simpler times, my childhood was SO different from kids today and in many ways, SO much better.

Like said, you can be the best parent in the world, discipline and all and still have shit kids. And you can be the worst parent in the world and have a model student. Yes discipline helps, but it also something to do with personality and social influences.

I’ll give you an example, my DHs sister was raised properly, A+ student and everything with that. She met her future husband who was the influence who took all that away and got her on drugs and her life was never the same. My DH was the bad kid. No matter how properly he was raised he still did bad stuff and barely graduated school. Yet he grew up to have a better life.

You can do the best you can but it all comes down to the kid. I knew a lot of very smart kids who did the shittiest stuff in high school and got away with it. Now with social media it is very hard to get away with much unless your real slick. And there are alot of teenagers who are.

I hear what you're saying and I agree. I certainly think it's as much personality and environment as it is parenting. I do think good parenting gives a kid a good foundation as does a parent who is involved and tries to nip bad behaviors in the bud. There are times, of course, that despite one's best efforts a kid will go wrong.

I just disagreed with your broad statement that parenting doesn't matter, I think it matters a lot but other factors do play a part in how any child turns out.

People will also blame social media and phones but.. who buys the phones? The iPad? The computer? Who Allows the apps? Parents. Ultimately, parents are responsible for the actions of their kids in eyes of the law. Maybe not in the court of public opinion (and I do agree with some of Windy’s points) but the law would require a parent to pay up for their kids actions.

Many things kids do today, was done in our childhood and as teens but it just wasn't published so you only hear about stories when you get together with other friends or online now.
There are memes out there about generation x's life back then and how we all survived lol

We drank water from a garden hose, rode our bikes without helmets and sat in the front seat of a car before we were 12. We did NOT expose ourselves, slap teachers, lick urinals... not even close. You have to know that. You can't compare kids today and these "challenges" with the stupid things we did as a kid.

How do you know that? You know what every tween and every teen in the world did at these same ages? I know that I was pretty dull compared to the stories my friends tell me they did. They didn't come from bad families but because of no social media back then (and parents following their kids every foot steps like they do today with Life 360) parents didn't know 100% where they were or what they were doing.

Feb-Juneis all stuff done when I was in high school and is pretty tame. The other stuff is a bit overboard. What the hell is “jab a breast”? Expose yourself? We did have streakers during school games ???????

Who made this list? I’d love to know that. Oh and again, back then no social media. Today kids dumb enough to record themselves.

Come on. You just like to argue. Do you think if this behavior was going on in schools when we were kids that communication would not have sent home? Or lectures would not have been given from administrations to the student bodies? Just because there wasn’t social media doesn’t mean there was no communication. Times are very different now and kids are out of control and over the top. This generation is completely different and much more entitled than generations of the past. Social media broadcasts it sure. But you can’t say they’re the same or we did the same type of pranks as you call this delinquent behavior.

No Ginger, you missed my point.

When we were kids times were simpler in that there was less pressure to keep up with others because there was no social media to advertise your life on, there were no electronics to lose yourself on and kids weren't exposed to as much as they are today at such a young age. I feel like we were innocent longer, we were kids longer. The internet and social media has absolutely changed the way and the speed in which kids "grow up", times were absolutely different in the 80's and 90's and I miss that.

Kids did stupid stuff since the dawn of time, no doubt, but some of the cr@p we are seeing on social media goes beyond dumb and has crossed over into dangerous, negligent and even criminal behavior. I certainly didn't see a lot of that kind of behavior where I was growing up. Social media is unfortunately making that type of behavior something to aspire to and cheer about. It's sad how influential these forces are in our kids lives, it's makes parenting that much harder than back in the day.

I am not disagreeing some kids are out of control but I don't think they just started doing these things.
How would you hear about the lectures? On the nightly news? Everything is word of mouth and you didn't get a robocall or email saying what was going on in school like they do now.

I just don't believe that kids did not do stupid things before cellphones were there to record it all or the internet was around to show what they were doing.

You and I might not have done these things and weren't aware of them, but they were going on and just ask your classmates now, if you speak to any and you will be shocked if you were a good kid who didn't get in trouble or do the things that would get you in trouble.

Heck I didn't even know about all the drugs going around my school and I hear about it from friends about so and so and I was honestly shocked as I must have had my head in the sand for 4 years in high school lol.

Did you not have school assemblies? Announcements? Not sure when you were in school but there were absolutely robo calls to our parents about announcements, attendance, anything going on that parents needed to be aware of. I remember the lectures and assemblies and announcements when senior prank week was approaching or any other infractions were occurring. NEVER was anything as disgusting as it is today. We were told not to TP certain areas of schools... NOT to stop licking urinals and exposing ourselves.

Grew up in Brooklyn before moving to another borough in NYC. Went to high school in 90s. No robo calls back then in my school. I also spent two years in a school with metal detectors and kids still brought stuff to school that they shouldn’t have. A letter or a note home would have been intercepted. And yep that list included lots of stuff that happened back then except it was no challenge.

You must be much younger than me as I am the generation of watching the scroll on the TV if your school was closed. We didn't have robocalls.

Exactly. There was no notoriety back then and kids never gave the letters to their parents. I am sure parents still don't know what their kids did now at 40 and 50 years old.

We were just at a friend of my DH’s house for a party and he grew up with him. They finally told his parents some stories of what they did in their house when they went away on vacations. She was shocked and laughed. Lots of parents are clueless

Same, but robocalls were pretty standard at my school.

And everyone knew where the drugs were. Even the lunch lady. Even if you didn't partake in that behavior you knew they were circulating. Nothing was shocking.

DH was the same. He was the typical Dennis The Menace but he grew up to have a better life, and with good values. He came from a stabled and loving home.

Oh yes and the security guard.

I think if you had answering machine back then, it was easy to erase before mom and dad got home. Or like I did cause my mom was stay at home…unplugged the phone Jack so the phone would not ring.

Re: TikTok School Challenges

I was just scrolling fb and saw this and thought this was perfect for this thread. Don’t know the person who posted it, just someone on a page I follow.
#2 and #10 especially.

Top ?10 things I wish someone would’ve told me before my first child entered high school...

1. Nobody Gets through high school unscathed so make nothing off limits in your daily discussions. Sex, weed, STDs/protection, drinking, shoplifting, consent, sneaking out, parties, racism, bullying, heartbreak... it may be uncomfortable but it’s all open for discussion.

2. Forcing your child to be good doesn’t mean you have a good child. You probably have a sneaky child. Set clear boundaries and let them make mistakes so they can learn how to be accountable for their actions and face consequences. (Grounded at 14 is far better than jail at 20)

3. You only get one shot at a first reaction so DON’T OVERREACT. You can always go back and be a little firmer but you can never take back harsh words said in anger. If you blow it… Apologize. every. single. time.

4. When they do mess up, don’t attack their character. They’re not a slut, a thief, a compulsive liar, lazy or stupid. They’re good people making bad decisions. Keep your focus on their actions and making better choices for their future.

5. Their brains will not be fully formed until well after graduation so understand they WILL make stupid, impulsive decisions. When they say they don’t know why they did it… Sometimes that’s actually true.

6. There’s nothing wrong with a C. Don’t make perfection your standard for them.

7. It’s easy to forget how much we wanted to fit in back in high school. The security you have with who you are and handling peer pressure has taken you 30+ years to develop. They want to be liked by their peers too and will be influenced by them. Just help them to see which ones truly care about their well-being and which ones don’t.

8. Suicide is real and they have to know you will help them get through anything that life brings. Continue to tell ?them over and over that there’s NOTHING so bad we can’t get through as a family.

9. Make sure they understand consent in every situation. teach them how to be assertive. Practice high pressure scenarios with them saying no.
If the other person is drunk... the answer is no.
If the other person is not sure... the answer is no. Anything short of a sober yes… The answer is no.

10. Finally...Your child’s behavior is not a reflection of how good a parent you are. Don’t pat yourself on the back when they do something great and don’t beat yourself up when they make poor choices. It’s NOT about you.

Just remember we’re all in this together. There’s no trophy at graduation for having the perfect child so embrace all the “teachable moments” along the way!?

People will also blame social media and phones but.. who buys the phones? The iPad? The computer? Who Allows the apps? Parents. Ultimately, parents are responsible for the actions of their kids in eyes of the law. Maybe not in the court of public opinion (and I do agree with some of Windy’s points) but the law would require a parent to pay up for their kids actions.

This is the problem. Parents buy the devices, but many do not monitor them. Some of my students have their phones locked down. Their parents literally take their phones at bedtime and the kids don’t get them back until they leave for school.

Meanwhile, I had a kid who told me he never slept at night due to playing with his phone/video games and when I asked the mom to take those things away at night so he could sleep, she was adamant that she couldn’t take away his things. I said who pays for “his” things.

You know what kills me? How much younger and younger kids are being handed phones. An 8 year old does NOT need a cell phone. But every year it gets younger and younger. And because one parent allows it, the other kids start wanting it too of course.
My daughter was relentless about wanting a phone because all her friends had one. It got to the point that I told her that if she asked me again she'd have to wait even longer because she knew our plan (middle school) and we weren't going to deviate from it because she was nagging.
It was maddening.
But one parent allows a 1000 dollar cell phone in elementary and everyone follows along and the kids who don't have one feel left out etc.
Peer pressure is real and it starts with the parents

I totally get that for younger kids. I have seen parents taking away phones or turning off WiFi very early with kids who will be out on their own the following year.
Kids have to learn how to be more independent BUT when they are younger they need to be disciplined.
