I’m genuinely wondering about these tests recently. All of a sudden TONS of people in my circle and my town are testing positive. Vaccinated and unvaccinated. They all literally have a stuffy nose or a sore throat. Many assumed allergies. All summer during the “delta surge” there was crickets. Now everyone and their mother is testing positive and just have a quick head cold.
We do know that viruses mutate. So maybe this is the mutation of it that comes with basically just cold symptoms now. Maybe? Or maybe that's what most vaccinated people end up feeling. Cold like symptoms and nothing else. I mean we know how easily the common cold is spread and so many people get them
Or maybe the tests have always detected the common cold/virus.
I have never experienced a total loss of taste and smell with a common cold. I am just going to be glad I have the vaccine as we all know it could have been worse...
Really? I do. Not all the time but many many times I have. I remember before we knew about this I lost it for about 2 weeks and it seemed much longer than I usually lose it.
It usually is times that I have events too that I am not contagious sick but couldn’t taste the foods and drinks. It sucked.

A total loss of taste and smell is the most bizarre (and unsettling) experience. I've never experienced that with a cold either, a cold diminishes your taste and smell but COVID literally wipes it out. I couldn't smell or taste a single thing, literally nothing. It took weeks and weeks for it to come back. It was really slow going but thankfully it returned to normal.
Glad you're not having a severe case and hopefully you're on the mend soon! 
Never with a cold but I had some crazy virus about 10 years ago where I lost taste and smell. It was definitely freaky. And annoying.
It is very freaky and REALLY annoying. It is a super strange feeling to smell and taste nothing whatsoever. I was relieved that it slowly came back and returned to normal, although that took a while. I have friends and family that still (months to over a year later) haven't gotten their smell and taste back and many foods taste outright disgusting to them even now.
When my DD lost her taste and smell with COVID she also had phantom smells, she would constantly smell burning cigarettes that weren't there. I know of a few who had that same weird issue, one friend constantly smelled garbage. So gross.

Just a different type of virus and the symptoms a little more intense.
The poster said that never happened before to her and myself and others on another thread have said we have had that with other colds.

Perhaps I had a strain of Covid.
I also had a virus in 2012 that waa the sickest I have ever been and almost sent me to the hospital.
But back then they just shrugged their shoulders , said I was negative for flu and it was some "virus" and life moved on, unchecked.

Not true. Now they test for covid just as they do for flu and strep when you show certain symptoms. You're either negative or your positive, just like with strep and flu. There is no big conspiracy and nobody ever said everything had to be covid now. But you have to test for covid just like other infections. How does this thread where the poster just stated she tested positive and wanted support turn into the back and forth about covid, it's seriousness or validity?
Oh, nevermind, I know how.
OP, I hope you feel much better soon! I'm sure it stinks all around.

A total loss of taste and smell is the most bizarre (and unsettling) experience. I've never experienced that with a cold either, a cold diminishes your taste and smell but COVID literally wipes it out. I couldn't smell or taste a single thing, literally nothing. What scares me is that some of the vaccinated people I know that are testing positive have lost their sense of taste and smell as well - that means brain function/nervous system has been implicated. I would at least like to think that the vaccine could prevent this aspect of it. So scary that it does not.

Rapid but they did the other one too so it will be a few days for that
My son tested positive on a rapid, but they did the PCR as well. Because he tested positive on the rapid, they never sent the PCR out to test. It was very frustrating because we never knew for sure if he was positive. He did have mild symptoms, so I'm pretty sure it was a correct positive, but it would have been nice to have that positive PCR as well as confirmation.
We had to quarantine the kids for 10 days bc they are too young to be vaccinated. Because my husband and I are vaccinated, we did not have to quarantine after they verified our vaccine status. You have to quarantine the full 10 days bc you are the positive one even though you are vaccinated.

Ugh God!!! I feel bad for you that you are not feeling well and now you are going to have your kids doing remote learning while you are trying to get better. That's a real 1-2 punch. I hope you feel better soon.

However, there have been multiple PCR testing protocols that prove that the PCR will only diagnose the virus that cause COVID-19. It will not detect the four other common strains of coronavirus, including those that cause the common cold.

My child came home sick from school. Had to take DC to PM Peds for Covid test. PCR came back negative for Covid. Had to convince the MDs at PM Peds to test for other things. Rapid strep came back negative. Full strep came back 3 days later positive. DH & I are now also sick. I tested negative for Covid 3 days before DC had test, and just tested negative again with all my cold symptoms. If the covid tests gave out false positives due to recognition of other coronoviruses either DC or I would have tested positive.

Thank you for asking, much better today and got my smell and taste back a little but so that's good. I'm still isolation in my room but so far the kids and husband are the picture of health

For example: Say a person with COPD comes into the hospital due to an exacerbation caused by COVID.
They die.
The hospital lists COVID as the cause of death.
But wait someone says. They had COPD. They died from the COPD exacerbation not COVID.
That person is confusing the mechanism of death vs the cause of death.
The mechanism is respitory failure and the cause of death is COVID. People with COPD have exacerbations all the time. But the COVID pushed the patients into respitory failure.

COVID - Cause of Death
So yes, I agree with your thinking. Having underlying medical issues does make you more at risk for a poor prognosis. But if COVID is the impetus that results in the underlying condition condition to kill the patient at that time, the cause is COVID.
(This is how it was explained to me. Please correct me if I am wrong.)
But ultimately, those 700,000+ people are dead and the count keeps rising.

They also include those who died at home at the beginning of the pandemic because they didn't seek medical care because of Covid. They didn't HAVE Covid but they died because they were scared to the hospital because of Covid (my Dh is in the FDNY and did a lot of non-Covid medical calls in the beginning before DiBlasio announced all causes of death were Covid).

Ok how many went into the hospital with covid or were in there for other issues relating to their underlying condition.
The point is that you have a greater chance of catching any virus or illness if you have underlying issues that could make it worse.

Yes. When I had that mystery virus years ago my loss of taste was not congestion related.
Perhaps I had a strain of Covid.
I also had a virus in 2012 that waa the sickest I have ever been and almost sent me to the hospital.
But back then they just shrugged their shoulders , said I was negative for flu and it was some "virus" and life moved on, unchecked.
Yes, but were hospitals full of others with the same virus? Were thousands of people all sick at the same time? Did 700k+ people die of your virus? Probably not.

Covid has killed 698,672 so far.
Since 8/2020 there have been 3,069,152 hospital admissions for COVID.
The flu hospitalizes 140,000 – 810,000 annually.
This is not just a simple virus.
How many of this 700k has underlying issues. Issues that sent them to the hospital for something else and was recorded only as Covid? I bet you don’t have that number.
It doesn't really matter what they came in for.
For example: Say a person with COPD comes into the hospital due to an exacerbation caused by COVID.
They die.
The hospital lists COVID as the cause of death.
But wait someone says. They had COPD. They died from the COPD exacerbation not COVID.
That person is confusing the mechanism of death vs the cause of death.
The mechanism is respitory failure and the cause of death is COVID. People with COPD have exacerbations all the time. But the COVID pushed the patients into respitory failure.

So yes, I agree with your thinking. Having underlying medical issues does make you more at risk for a poor prognosis. But if COVID is the impetus that results in the underlying condition condition to kill the patient at that time, the cause is COVID.
(This is how it was explained to me. Please correct me if I am wrong.)
But ultimately, those 700,000+ people are dead and the count keeps rising.
You can believe what you would like. I don't believe (and I believe there were numbers out months ago stating how many were TRUE covid deaths as it seems most every death that occurred was being written as covid no matter the true cause of death.
