While at the current time I would prefer not to vaccinate my children for COVID, if it was necessary for them to attend school I would vaccinate.

I think its a jump and I am not overly concerned that it will be mandated. Especially as we are now seeing that the vaccine effectiveness is not what they originally projected.

Agreed. I am not convinced they will mandate the vaccine for children any time soon. There would be an exorbitant amount of push back.

I watch main stream TV and any "medical expert" I have seen on TV has been very hesitant to promote the vax for kids. All I have heard them say is more data needs to be collected.

In the event they mandate it this year, I would have to consider a home schooling cooperative/pod or whatever they are called. I literally can not believe I just wrote that but I just am not comfortable with the idea of vaccinating them with this yet.

The thing that frightens me is that the governor mentioned in an article (in MSM) finding a way to mandate that school kids get vaccinated to protect the kids. I do hope there is enough pushback as well as many who are vaccinated, as well as those who are unvaccinated, feel uncomfortable vaccinating their children at this point.

Protect the kids. Please.
I'm trying to protect my child by NOT giving her this vaccine.
Who the fuk is she to tell me how to protect MY kid?
My anger as a parent is just boiling over right now.

How you feel is how anitvaxers felt when they were forced to either vaccinate or remove their child from school.

I see both sides of mandating and not mandating vaccines for school. But how are some ok with some vaccines being mandated and others not??!!
I see all the outrage now but where were all these parents when other vaccines were mandated!

Not calling you specifically out I just find it ironic and wonder how many realize that vaccines are required as is and how many parents were outraged just like people
Are outraged now.

I respect the anti vaxers and their opinions and their choices that they feel are best for their child... but I am not one.
The reason I am ok with other vaccines is that they have been around long enough to know long term side effects and they often protect against things that are more deadly to children than Covid.
To me the risk/reward on those are way different than the risk/reward on this one. For MY child at least.
This one is way too new, with too many adverse affects to be mandated IMO
Maybe 10 years from now I'll feel differently.
The flu shot is not even mandated for school and I do believe flu is more deadly in children statistically.

ETA- my daughter is going to the doctor this week to get about 3 vaccines/boosters that she needs to start middle school. They made a huge stink that we have to drop off the paperwork before they even set foot in the building on day one. I have no issue giving her any of those

This is a different type of vaccine than the ones mandated. I know it's not the flu (gasp how dare I compare) but, it's a vaccine for a respiratory virus - which currently, are not mandated...

We know a number of kids who had covid and they were sick for less than 24 hours. DH had 5 days of severe side effects between his two doses. I'm not rushing to do that to my children. Fortunately I had minor side effects that were bareable and I was able to function...

My children have received all of the other vaccines they have needed otherwise.

Exactly.

I wasn’t outraged when people were fighting mandates because my kid was vaccinated. They were protected by the vaccines I was comfortable giving them. I never judged anyone for fighting to protect their kids.

I can be ok with some vaccines and not want to 100% trust a vaccine that isn’t working the way it was marketed. My son does not need this brand new vaccine yet and the potential side effect of myocarditis. He is healthy and has a very strong immune system. Why should I be forced to give it him? Let people decide for themselves.

I’m glad I’m not alone but sorry any of us have to think about this. I feel so sad for my kids. And for the state of the country /world quite honestly. Keeps me up at night at times.

Same. I keep thinking this can't be happening. I really hope we don't get there. The data and info around COVID 19 is too new and too fluid for anyone to be placing mandates IMO.

To answer the original question if we get to that point...bye bye NY. We would sell and leave the state. DH and I already are ready to move out of NY. I would like not to have to but between the taxes and if the mandates pass, we absolutely would leave if its whats best for our family....no question.

I don't want to homeschool. I want my children to be in a school setting and socialize BUT I do know parents are banding together and homeschooling in pools, paying teachers to homeschool their kids and good for them! The less funding the states get the more they will realize that they work for us...not the other way around!

If push came to shove, I would vaccinate. I am not a fan of it for my pre pubescent children, but I think they are most likely safe. I would prefer more trials on children their age though.

I keep saying I can't believe this is real life.
Showing papers to eat in a restaurant in NYC?
Forcing a brand new vaccine on young children for a virus that rarely even affects them seriously?
I'm so depressed about what's next.
I have a sense of doom everyday that in less than 2 years this is what happened to us. So quickly, smoothly and with very little protest.

An academic gave an interview about the history of vaccine mandates on NPR. It’s a quick listen or you can read the transcript. I’m saying what I think is wrong or right, but this isn’t anything new legally.

https://www.npr.org/2021/08/29/1032169566/the-u-s-has-a-long-precedent-for-vaccine-mandates

“ KHALID: I gather there's two centuries of legal precedent on whether states are allowed to mandate vaccines. I used to actually live in Massachusetts, and I recall hearing quite a bit about this case from the early 1900s that went all the way up to the Supreme Court. Wasn't it about this very issue?

GOSTIN: It was. And, you know, the first vaccine mandate law was enacted in the United States in 1809 for smallpox. But the Supreme Court in 1905 in a very famous case called Jacobson v. Massachusetts upheld a Cambridge City law, which required smallpox vaccination. That was something where the Supreme Court said that we don't have a right to place other people at risk. And by 1922, in another case, Justice Brandeis, writing for unanimous court, upheld childhood school mandates, calling it settled law.

KHALID: Just this month, the Supreme Court, in fact, declined to take up a case that was challenging a vaccine mandate at Indiana University. Do you interpret this as being a sign that the courts are willing to stand by other mandates?

GOSTIN: I think the courts will absolutely support and uphold vaccine mandates, particularly in the private sector, and they also will when states and cities require vaccines. But I should say that it's a misconception that President Biden has the power to have a nationwide vaccine mandate. Traditionally, vaccine mandates have been imposed by cities and states.”

[…]

“ KHALID: So, professor, let me ask you about the reverse. Do states, do local cities have the authority to ban vaccine mandates or to ban proof of vaccinations?

GOSTIN: Both Florida and Texas's ban on mandates are on hold because the courts have temporarily blocked them. These are, on their face, irrational laws because, you know, they basically ban a scientifically proven intervention. But on the other hand, states have traditionally had very considerable authority to regulate local governments and businesses in their states. But in this case, it just - you know, for the judges, it just may be a bridge too far.”

ETA: Another article

“ Federal and state governments: States have long had the constitutional authority to mandate vaccinations, which the Supreme Court has upheld twice, first in 1905 and then in 1922. The federal government, however, has limited power to mandate vaccines. It can only require them to prevent transmission of a dangerous infectious disease across state lines or international borders. The federal government has never sought to require nationwide vaccinations, and the courts probably would not allow it. To date, all state government mandates have been for fully approved vaccines. Thus, it is likely cities and states would wait to mandate COVID-19 vaccines until they are fully licensed. But when governments act as employers, they would be in a similar legal position as businesses. Thus, federal and state worker COVID-19 vaccine mandates are fully lawful even under an EUA.”

“ People cite bodily integrity, personal liberty and freedom as the most common justifications for refusing vaccines. But these arguments don’t hold water. It’s true that everyone has the right to refuse a medical intervention for their own good. But vaccines not only protect the person vaccinated but also that person’s family, neighbors, and classmates or co-workers. No one has the right to go into a crowded classroom or workplace unmasked and unvaccinated. Vaccine mandates do not unethically discriminate. Discrimination is wrong when it is based on irrational reasons or animus, such as discrimination based on race, gender or disability. But vaccine mandates are simply a tool, and they apply equally to everyone. They don’t impute blame or seek to shame the unvaccinated. They are intended only to keep the entire population safe. Finally, requiring proof of vaccination does not violate a person’s privacy. Individuals are free to decline to give information about whether they received a shot, but if they do decline, they must expect reasonable consequences to ensure everyone’s health. Additionally, federal health information privacy rules apply principally to health care providers and not to businesses or schools. There is also a public health exception to privacy rules.”

and they mandate it, what's your plan? I'm sick over this.

I absolutely will not give my daughter a vaccine that I myself am not willing to take. All the other in school immunizations have been tested and around for a long time. Not the case with this just yet. We will not be lab rats.

That being said… I am fully ready to homeschool her if it came down to that. People in my neighborhood already do it through local co-ops (it’s pretty common here in the south actually).

That's all well and good but as a parent, my daughter is my main concern.
I'm still not willing to give her this vaccine, and all the "experts " and their talking points mean nothing to me.

Re: If you don't want to vaccinate your kids...

That's all well and good but as a parent, my daughter is my main concern.
I'm still not willing to give her this vaccine, and all the "experts " and their talking points mean nothing to me.

I have no comment on what is right or wrong, and I understand your position. Just simply stated what has happened in the past. In one of the articles it mentions that trials for children are not done and won’t be done by the end of 2021 at the earliest. It sounds like it won’t be granted full approval until at least 2022. I think you’ll be fine this school year.

That's what I'm banking on. But my concern is DD is turning 12 in June... which means I she will be eligible. I hope they don't start forcing it on the kids who are 12 and up.
It's just a bad situation all around sadly

If push came to shove, I would vaccinate. I am not a fan of it for my pre pubescent children, but I think they are most likely safe. I would prefer more trials on children their age though.

Same. Although I am vaccinated and trust it for myself, not for them just yet.

Though I do think the chances of their education/social skills suffering from me trying to work and homeschool are far greater than the vaccine risks.

Kids 5+ are supposed to be eligible by the holidays. As soontobemommy posted - there are balls rolling in the NYS senate to pass this mandate.

All of the parents who are against the vaccination becoming mandatory absolutely need to take the time to write their local leaders. I always say how it's ridiculous that people get their panties in a bunch over the presidential election and nobody gives a hoot about our local elections when those are the people whose actions actually really can effect our day-to-day. It's imperative that we make our voices heard and, if they are falling on deaf ears, we make changes come election time.

ITA!

I have reached out to my State Assemblyman and will be reaching out to my State Senator shortly.

If I don't hear back, I will drop a handwritten note in his mailbox when I am picking my son up from school next week.

Totally agree, I am in the same boat. some people who dont have kids should not be giving their 2 cents in.

It is hard enough for us parents to make this decision and then to hear from ones who will never have to trying to tell us what to do. Chat Icon

Aren’t your children college-aged and able to decide themselves? At a certain age it’s not the parents decision anymore.

Exactly, I have seen so many stories about 18+ "kids" getting vaxxed despite their antivax parents.
