Tropical Storm Henri

Is anyone concerned? Honestly I only heard about it this afternoon then all the alerts went off. I went to Walmart to grab some groceries and some extra stuff just in case and it was crazy..water was almost gone.

Anyone prepping?

We are at our summer house in Martha’s Vineyard and I am a little panicked because we are only a block from the beach and I’m afraid of flooding. We did a grocery shop. Not much else we can do.

I cleaned up the backyard and hubby mowed but that is about all we can do. Still going out tomorrow for a bday party bbq as nothing is going to start until Sunday morning. Think my food shopping will get delayed though.

Hope this is not going to be so bad. We don’t usually lose power so hoping we will be ok and others will too.

Did my normal food shopping i do on Sunday tonight to get it over with. Went to BJs and ShopRite and it surprisingly wasn’t that busy at all.

My DH made sure the generator is working and got gas for it.

The meteorologist on GMA this morning was like "watch out Chatham" or something like to that effect. I hadn't been paying much attention until then. We have a house there so I am hopeful it doesn't get pummeled with renters in it.

While i do think panic buying gets out of control they do specifically tell you to have bottled water … now I don’t think they mean you should be buying 10 cases of it like people do!!

As far as gas I 100% told me DH to make sure we hade enough to run the generator! If there is no power gas stations could possibly not be working and then there’s no point in having the generator but again we didn’t get tons of gas that I am sure some people will being getting ridiculous amounts.

I’m also still not over Sandy and being out of power for 2 weeks. Even though we did have generator we didn’t have a lot of gas so we only put it on for short periods of time.

It also doesn’t help that PSEG has already said that they expect anywhere from 100,000-600,000 people to lose power for up to 7-10 days!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

How they know that and know it will take that long baffles me!! Makes me sad and mad that they already know it will take them forever!!

Re: Tropical Storm Henri

Legit question. Do the taps not run water in a power outage?
I didn't think the faucets were electric powered.
What's with the buying of water?

I don’t know I am thinking it may get contaminated so that’s why. But don’t take my word on it.

Or maybe If you need to evacuate to a shelter or something have water to bring??

ETA: I googled it lol. Someone on this site does say that water can run dry from the water towers of the Electric is off and no water is pumping to them. My thought though that would be the first thing LIPA will fix but ideas of it was really really bad it could still take them a while.

If you have a private well the pump wouldn’t work. My bff (not on LI) has no water when her power goes out.

Tropical Storm Henri

We lost power for over a week last summer with Isaias so I’m not happy…we were pretty unprepared and we couldn’t find ice for several days.

I’ll invest $10 tomorrow night to fill my cooler with ice just in case—so I can have some milk, fruit, etc for the kids.
Did some extra laundry so we all have underwear!

Yes. LI has a ground water system and it needs to be pumped up, which requires electricity.

NYC (all five boroughs) gets its water from reservoirs upstate and then it is carried down with three tunnels. They were working/planning on a tunnel for LI, but I have no idea what happened with that plan. At one time some reservoirs on LI (mainly in Nassau county) were for parts of NYC, but that stopped a hundred or so years ago. You can still see the old buildings for this around the reservoirs. For example, you can see a lot along the bike path starting on Merrick road in Massapequa going all the way up to Bethpage (a lot in Massapequa and North Massapequa). I think electricity could affect NYS’s water supply as well. Not sure.

If you ever get a chance, get yourself a Watershed permit and go upstate around the reservoirs. It’s really nice up there.

NYC has one of the best tap waters in the world. LI, not so much.

We put water bottles in the freezer now. They act as an ice box and can take them out for a cooler as well (less messy than ice). Just a tip.

We are driving back from PA tomorrow and I’m already looking at hotels right at the NY/NJ border to stop. Not ideal but it is what it is. Have to be at work Monday AM so trying to be as close to home as possible.

ETA: we have a family member home to put water bottles in, in case you thought we had magical powers haha

I've made blocks of ice for the freezer and fill in the spaces with water bottles. I am also collecting whatever power banks I have today and charging them. If anyone has one of those portable auto battery chargers, they can be used for electronics via USB. Just make sure it is charged as they lose power just sitting.

Re: Tropical Storm Henri

We’ll do the usual

Fill up the trucks, fill the gas can and check the generator. We always have a ton of food in the house (canned soups, tuna, deep freezer full of meat, etc) so no extra shopping. Did laundry last night just so it’s one less thing to think about.

But even during Sandy when everyone had no power, my taps were definitely running.
During the great blackout 18 years ago too, when the entire grid was down.
I never once did not have tap water due to power outages.

But all this is very interesting about the old reservoirs on Long Island etc

Same here and I feel like maybe we are being lax about this as we are all just going about doing stuff today. Bday party, work, one kid going to the Central Park concert. Hopefully it won’t be too bad.
