Our school district is requiring masks indoors for all staff and students regardless of vaccination status. Masks are not required outdoors. They will not be social distancing in the classroom in most cases due to space limitations. I am fine with the indoor masking since there is not going to be a remote option if a child gets quarantined- it will count as an absence.

How can they mark that an absence if your child was forced to quarantine? I would be fighting that. No way in hell is my child getting marked absent because the school is making them quarantined because a positive in class.
Especially my district when they quarantine a whole entire class no matter if a child was even close to the person that tested positive Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

But I'm sure it's an excused absence.
The only absences that are issues with the district are unexcused absences.
Like pulling your child for vacations etc
Being quarantined due to exposure has got to be an excused absence and as far as I know, a excused absence means pretty much nothing

I guess if it’s excused I would be ok with it. I do pull my children for vacations so I wouldn’t want to use up those days.

What exactly constitutes excuses absences anyway because on my son‘s report card even though I sent doctor notes in for pulling him from he still had an awful lot of marked absences on the report card.

The absences should be makred as Excused or Unexcused.
If they are sick, with a note, they will still be marked as an absence but it should say excused or be indicated excused somehow.
Unexcused are vacations, or pulling them out for anything other than illness, death in the family, doctor appt etc

after a certain amount of time if your child is not in school they will not advance to the next grade no matter how well they do on tests. There is no way I would stand for this. They will not be able to learn if there is no virtual class. This sounds like a complete and total disaster in the making.

Children can still advance even with excessive absences. Excessive absences can lead to a pre-pins meeting due to educational neglect. If the absences are due to a covid exposure, admin should not flag it for such a meeting.

Schools honestly have no idea what they are doing. Directive really should come from the state. Virtual learning was a shitshow last year and many students took advantage of the system at least at the secondary level.

On one of our local FB pages there was a mom who was mad her daughter couldn’t walk at middle school graduation because she has 100 absences during remote learning (the district she is in did a poor job monitoring students). She was supposed to go to summer school so she could advance.

There are about 180 days of school. If her daughter missed 100 of them, that's more than half of the year. It seems to me that has nothing to do with the school and is on the parent.

Right? I mean where was she for those 100 days.? Not to mention it was REMOTE so you can't blame being quarantined or even being slightly sick with something- you are home, you can log on.
Something is really off with that

Yup… it was one thing everyone agreed on lol.

I noticed in 1q my son had 5 absences in gym. He went to school 2x a week and gym is every other day… I immediately reached out to the teacher and figured out what was wrong (he didn’t realize he had to go on a Google meet since it always started late).

Schools

They just sent out guidance for Suffolk - masks are highly "recommended" for all students and staff. Social distancing only needs to be 3 feet. Quarantining for close contacts is now 3 feet instead of 6 feet. They gave an exception for quarantining if both contacts are masked.

Which I would assume will now be adopted as mandated by individual schools. I can’t see them putting forth “parental choice” for masks, regardless of parents complaining. Not yet, at least.

Maybe mandated for fall and re-visit after winter break?

where was this announced would love to read it so i can understand it fully

I am over quarantining! my one child was quarantined so many times and I dont want a repeat this year! they do no other contact tracing so why kids need to sit in for 10 days cause someone in class tested positive but no one else that child was near would be made too cause they dont even ask who you are around. its so stupid!!

The quarantine has been my question as well. Our district just asked for parental input in the decision making process and that’s my question. It became a huge issue in the middle school when a child tested positive and everyone who sat anywhere near that child in all of their 9 period classes had to quarantine for 10 days. You can imagine this ripple effect. The students were able to switch to remote learning and log into the class while home. If they don’t offer that option this year, you are talking about many kids home, doing this for 10 days without live instruction. Back to 2020 days. I do believe the middle school and high school teachers will still have to have some sort of Google classroom code going constantly for this reason.

Our district hasn’t commented on masks yet but they did say that they will assist those home in quarantine with remote learning.

The amount on quarantine decreased so much when they only did those near the student in question, not the whole class.

It would be nice if switched to only those who sit by them in my district but I still don’t get why they only do contact tracing for schools. After getting 4 phone calls after my whole family tested positive not one person asked me who I was by or for thier names and numbers so why make the kids sit in for 10 days. I don’t care if they want to make the class remote for 10 days ( my district will only be offering remote for those who are quarantine ) but to have the health department tell me my kid has to stay in for 10 days is absurd. I actually told them the last time he wasn’t staying in and and they can come to my house if they have a problem with it. I won’t be answering any calls from DOH this year.

Yeah I wouldn't answer those calls either. My friend was telling me how badly they harassed her last year. Asking her to put her young child on the phone to make sure he was home. She was like, um, we are all home, where on earth would my 6 year old be without us? It was absurd. I told her I just wouldn't answer. I actually don't answer my phone to anyone anymore anyway. Let them send the cops to my house. lol

I haven't seen any in NY confirm that they are going maskless - that's kind of why I asked the question to start, out of curiousity. All of the districts in our county have confirmed masks, except ours and one other (we formed a committee and will have a decision next week). A lot of folks are going to the school board tonight to seek parental choice.

Not required, recommended. Yes masks indoors and not outdoors. But then it says in the quarantine section that if both are wearing masks in close contact, which is under 3 feet now, they do not have to quarantine. So the argument is that if the students are over 3 feet away, which most are when sitting at a desk, they should not have to wear masks. If they are doing group projects together, then they do.

The government and the school districts are all too wishy washy. Make a choice and mandate it. All this wording about suggested, strongly encourage, recommended leaves too much open for interpretation and continues the debate. Say it's mandated or say it's a choice. They need to put on their big kids panties and take a stand.

Our district is following CDC/AAP guidance based on community spread. We’re a high transmission area so masks are required.

I appear to be an outlier on this forum - I’m happy about this decision.

I just found the presentation on their BOE website - good for them. I had a feeling if anyone would make masks optional it would be them as they were the first district to go back in person last year.

I agree as well. Good for them! If this is the case, I’m expecting E. Islip and Commack to do the same.
