So it seems that schools can make their own decisions as to masks and distancing this fall.

Some of the schools in my area have already announced (briefly after that announcement) that masks and distancing will be required.

Has your school district announced anything yet?

Nothing yet.
But the communication is always less than stellar so that's no surprise

Re: Schools

Our district is masks optional in school but mandatory on the bus. Not sure if that'll change prior to school starting but that's where things stand as of last week.

Schools

Our school will not make a decision until they hear from the Suffolk DOH but they always lean towards the most restrictive.

The only communication we got from the school district was that the state and the NYSDOH will not be forthcoming with any direction so the district has to figure it out for themselves. There will be meetings over the coming weeks. They better figure it out soon for our district goes back on sept 2nd!

Re: Schools

Nothing yet and I don’t expect an announcement until the day before school starts because they never tell parents stuff until the last minute about these things.

Our DOH recommended that masks be required. The district I work for has already adopted it for summer school. Not sure what my home district is going to do. The superintendent made it sound like masks will be required though in his most recent email. I hope they are. My DS will be wearing a mask regardless of what the district decides.

As for distancing who knows. My classes often have 28 students. Distancing is not possible. I had 20 kids last year and that was doable. I think I can probably accommodate 24 distanced if necessary.

LSP and Hofstra - looks like Murphy is mandating masks in all schools and it will be announced tomorrow.

Our superintendent mentioned in June after the mask free tease that we would be mask free as soon as they get the green light from the state - but I think they assumed that the CDC would provide guidance that masks aren’t needed, then the state, etc…

ETA - for summer school - masks weren’t required.

Re: Schools

My sons schools said they will mostly likely have to wear masks this years. Catholic school.

It’s funny how we have so much freedom in the summer then school nears by and it’s the worse numbers ever and a new variant. Last year was the South African and NY variant just in time to keep hybrid/remote and masks for school.

Ugh! I just saw that a few minutes ago. So frustrating. I really wish they'd leave it to the schools.

I do too but I’m sure most schools will go that way. My friend in Georgia’s kids started school earlier this week and she’s said it’s been a mess and there have been a ton of exposures - and asymptomatic exposed can come to school masked.

I know. I’d prefer no masks - but hybrid or remote learning will send me over the edge.

So after this I went to look at my old emails and I thought he said no masks at the end of the school year, now I see masks. I am not going to get excited over something I cannot change. If they say masks, my kids will wear masks. I just saw the numbers and after three months of no cases in my town, yesterday there were ten. That frustrates me more, edit, the school nurse said since my son was vaccinated he will not have to quarantine if exposed. Let’s see if that stays in place as well. I am sure it will be a poop show shortly.

That rule was in place in my district at the end of the year - moreso for teachers and staff as most students eligible weren’t fully vaccinated before school ended.

They ran the clinic at the middle and high school, so the high school nurse literally collected the cards from the kids as they were issued. So they know for a fact he was really vaccinated. They actually said that for kids they did not see get vaccinated they would be treated slightly differently and require a test from them in case of exposure. Half of the school kids took the opportunity to do the clinic. They also ran a clinic at a local doctors office, so they covered about 2/3 to 3/4 of the school.

Nothing from my employment district, nothing from my husband's district, and an e-mail of uncertainty from my home district.

Completely irresponsible to put it on the districts. The Department of Health had made so many guidelines, were calling people to make sure that they were quarantining, and now that things are getting worse, the are like....figure it out schools.

I would not want to be an administrator in a school district now...there is no winning this no matter what decisions will be made.

Definitely wouldn’t want to be an administrator - you can’t make everyone happy and there are many people who feel so strongly about each option.

I think the decision falls to the schools since the emergency powers given to Cuomo were rescinded.

Exactly, I don’t care about masks as long as he is in school full time.

I would anticipate a year like last year. Masks and distancing.

I also feel for BOE members and supers and anyone in school who has to answer phones. The BOE meetings have become a circus of the unhinged here. There is also coordinated effort to demand the homeschooling packet from schools to “scare” them that they will lose funding.

We had that in my district too. The amount of funding the districts will be losing for homeschoolers would be minimal and districts probably want that because it will help with distancing. They still need to pay their taxes regardless and that is where most of the school budget money comes from.

Although I was hoping no masks, I’m thinking masks will be required but I do hope my district loses those plastic shields. Many districts did away with them mid year last year with no issue.
My friend who lives in Florida, posted pics of her kids meet the teacher day yesterday, no masks on anyone, desks were grouped together in sets of 2-3 kids.

Didn't the FL Govemor ban masks in schools?

He banned them mandating it. I think he said it would be the parent's choice.
I don't' think he banned them as in, you are not allowed to wear a mask in a school if you want to.
