When to Seek Out Referral for an IEP?
If you sought out testing for an IEP through your school district, what caused you to seek out the referral?
My DS is in 1st grade. His reading is currently right below grade level. Of course, none of this is brought to our attention until his report card in March. (As a teacher that annoyed me more than anything as I am an over-communicator, so it is foreign to me that our first notice was the report card in March!)
Since then we have been diligently working on his reading at home. We were working on it before, but honestly my DS becomes frustrated if he does not know a word and shuts down immediately, which made practicing at home unbearable.
At this point, he will read one G/H level book per night requiring only a little help. He is making progress, but it is SLOW. His teacher has recommended him for a summer program so he does not lose too much progress.
I am just wondering if he should be evaluated for an IEP. I teach, but at the secondary level, so I am not sure what to look for in young children.

Do you think an IEP or does he just need extra help? My son has an IEP, but his reading and math are great. He was also in Early Intervention before 3 so when he turned 3 the school came to us to have him evaluated and he qualified for an IEP so he's had it since 3.
I do have friends who's kid don't have an IEP, but they did qualify for extra help at school. First go to the teacher, speak with the child study team as well and school counselor. Ask about before and/or after programs they offer that he can qualify for as well.

My son is dyslexic, and in first he got extra help for reading and was told by April he was caught up. We moved over that summer to a new district. They said we think there is a problem, so we got him tested. I was honestly upset the old district did not say there was a problem or suggest an IEP. So go with your gut and get him tested. Xoxo

I have emailed his teacher to see what she thinks.
He will be enrolled in the district summer school program so I am hoping he improves.

Thank you everyone.
His teacher got back to me and doesn’t think an IEP is needed at this time. She said he is on the cusp of cracking the code and that the summer program will let him maintain/improve his June level.

Yeah i think an IEP is a jump. Many kids are behind in their reading this year due to COVID

AIS may be the move for now. G/H is fine, on level is I/j for the end of 1st. Is he getting guided reading on his instructional level?

He reads nightly to us. His reading group is currently reading G-level books. I know J is on level at the end of the year. He has made progress since March, but it is slow.
The teacher recommended the 90 minutes summer reading/writing program so he will be doing that. I was planning on getting him a tutor 1-2 times a week so this takes that burden off plus it will alleviate some of the pressure I feel to do school with him over the summer to prevent learning loss.

The reading program over the summer might do the trick and also ask about AIS services next year. There is no 504 or IEP for AIS services. If he was approved for summer reading he should be reading intervention at school as well. With both of those interventions, if you don't see substantial progress by the middle of next year, then send in a formal request to have him tested.

It became much more obvious in 5th. Finally a teacher agreed with me that there was a processing problem. She wouldn't (couldn't) say the "D" word, but she slipped me a newspaper article about Dyslexia. Turned out her sister is dyslexic.
We requested an eval, school said his grades weren't low enough, but they would give him AIS reading and math.
$4k and 6 months later, a neuropsychologist diagnosed him with Dyslexia and Executive Function Disorder.
School needed to re-eval him again despite the diagnosis. They refused to use the "D" word throughout any of our meetings.
My son only got his IEP this mid-year...7th grade. And to be honest, I think they finally realized a lawsuit might be coming their way.
I'm not sure what reading approach your school uses, but I'm not a big fan of Balanced Literacy.

I'm not sure what reading approach your school uses, but I'm not a big fan of Balanced Literacy.
Just FYI, they probably didn't use the word dyslexia because it isn't recognized as a diagnosis, at least in NYC. My son is also dyslexic but it is on his IEP as a learning disability and is usually called a processing disorder.
My son was diagnosed in the third grade, I don't believe the OP needs to worry just yet....but keep an eye on it.

Thanks everyone!
He is making slow and steady progress. I am confident that his teacher knows what she is talking about. She is an older teacher with lots of experience. I am hopeful that the summer program will get him caught up.
While he did qualify for the summer reading/writing program, he actually did not qualify for the more intense RTI summer program. It seems like there are many kids in his reading group so he is not alone in being a little bit behind where he should be this year probably due to schools closing in March.
We are continuing to plug away at reading at home. He is definitely more willing to do it as his confidence grows.

Just seeing your reply now. My son is going into 9th grade, NJ does recognize dyslexia as an issue. Go to decoding dyslexia’s website http://www.decodingdyslexia.net and there is a book Overcoming Dyslexia Book these are enormous helpers to get you on the path. Your child needs Orton Gillingham instruction. It works best for kids under age 9/4th grade. I would find an education advocate and sue your district. I know that sounds harsh, but if they are not going to go all in helping your kid, they are doing a disservice to your family. If your child is not reading at grade level by fourth grade then they will likely not get there. I know that sounds harsh, but it needs to be written. To the other parent I am so so so incredibly sorry your district failed your child. Edit unfortunately, NY does not have dyslexia laws like NJ does. It will be a much more difficult fight for you.

Thank you for this information! I will definitely check out the resources you provided.
He finished the year at an “I” progressing to a “J”. A “J” is reading at grade level at the end of first grade and then again I November of 2nd grade (which is the grade he is going into). We read most days and he’s had a great deal of growth over the last few months and is much less frustrated and will actually use strategies which he never did in the past.

This is an old post, but I just wanted to update and say that my DS is now reading at grade level. His second grade teacher is absolutely amazing and has made all the difference. He definitely needed more hand holding than he was given in first grade where his teacher had to make up for a lot of kids having deficits due to a shortened kindergarten year in 2020. He has really blossomed as a reader and I am so proud of him.
