Which school district (Suffolk) can help us re-engage our 10yo?

I will be as candid as possible, we recently started seeing a therapist because things went down hill after Covid. Our DS stopped sleeping alone, waking up many times at night, moaning, talking in his sleep, waking himself up asking for mommy or daddy. He is 10 years old. All the progress we made from 5 to 9 to gradually helping him be independent went down the drain after covid.

When school started after winter break, his engagement also went down, and he went from loving school to borderline hating it. Everything stresses him out, we feel like teachers are just following canned curriculum and trying to finish the year, there is no one-on-one attention or any way to identify problems. Seriously it's like "good job, good job", like robots.

We live in Queens, and the school spends more time talking about racial issues, discrimination, history and current affairs more than math, science, health and music. It's important to teach kids about these issues, but I think they are already falling behind and spending more and more time on these issues is not the right answer.

We want to move to a district in Suffolk, doesn't have to be the top rated school district as long as they can identify student needs and help pull them back in and re-engage them. I also feel like he might get diagnosed with something so we can focus on treating whatever it is. He just gets frustrated so easily and cannot express his feelings, and he is extremely introvert.

I home we are not alone and we hope to find a SD that can help us pull him out of this. We were thinking Smithtown and Commack, but it doesn't look like there are special programs there, so maybe Three Village SD, how about Harborfields?

Sending hugs. My friend is going through something similar. Her 11 yr old was an A student (very smart, loving kid). Now hates school, failing, and is begging to finish the year at home. Sleeps with sibling, etc.

This pandemic has not been easy on anyone... Sending hugs!!

As far as school districts.. they are all solid and some of the best (IMO) in Suffolk. During all of this Commack had a great reopening plan back in Sept. The district also offers a lot of services for their students. I would def look there.

So sorry. Hugs and know you are not alone.
We experienced some regressions so we supplement with various modalities for our dc.
It has been a tough year.
I hear good things about Commack & 3V.

Check out South Huntington 100%!! They offer so many services for kids and are very on top of a child's needs.

Hugs to you and I hope it all works out.

I wouldn't pick Smithtown for any special needs although a great district. Commack is great for both gen ed and special ed. I am in Three Village and personally think they are the best. We have been in full time all grades since the beginning of the year and the kids are doing great. Their counseling services and all other special education services are outstanding.

First of all, I apologize for the delay in reply and if I made anyone felt I ignored this thread. :(
Thanks to Mrs-D-Girl's PM, I was notified and came to see all of your caring replies. Thread definitely gave me goosebumps and made me so happy once again to know this forum exists and that we are not alone.

We've just been outbid on a house in Commack that we thought was perfect for our small family. A lot of the houses are too big and high priced so finding a small one that's affordable and has good layout (like having 2nd bedroom next to master, instead of other end of the house or another floor) was a tough one, but it's OK we'll keep looking.

I was looking at Smithtown, Kings Park and East Northport but we weren't really happy with the selection in Smithtown. I will look into South Huntington as well as 3VSD.

Do any moms and dads here know anyone from Mount Sinai area? Found a place out that way and it was sold already by the time we looked into schools.

PS: We started therapy and been there 3 times already, and I think it's helping at least express his feeling more clearly but seems like it's a long way to go and I think this is why we feel a school district that has staff dedicated to this type of students, and especially going back to in-person, routine environment will be very helpful.

We have few more appointments this weekend in Stony Brook (3VSD) and Commack, let's see how these go, I will keep everyone posted!

Hugs back to everyone.
