I see a lot of comments about child care. Although I do not have a remote job, I was always under the impression that many companies that allowed remote work ALSO typically required that you have child care secured. Because how can any parent possibly say they are as (or more) productive if they are also watching their young children?
During normal times, yes, this is the case but when your kids only go to school 2-3x a week and there are fewer aftercare options other than hiring a babysitter, they've become more flexible.
And like a pp said - as long as you get your work done. I took my older DS to baseball today and my younger DS played on the playground for awhile and had a nice time so I will be working pretty late this evening.
ETA - Our company is getting a lot more work done at home - people are putting in longer hours as they are taking time in the day to do personal things too.

NYC will be finished. So many jobs lost and businesses destroyed.
It's sad actually.
It was such a great city until everyone just gave up and said...work from your bedroom for the rest of your life.

I think only because of the pandemic it’s acceptable right now to not have daycare however in normal times it’s really not.
I tried working from home for part of the week when my second was born to save on some daycare costs and it did not last for very long. I put him in full time. My job requires me to be available when needed and I can’t just work at night to make up the hours. He of course was crying and needed me right when I’m on the meetings and it got to be too much. I personally find it unprofessional to hear children in the background of a meeting.
My current job I was hired has full remote before the pandemic happened and I had my children in aftercare mostly because I didn’t want to do homework with them couldn’t pick them up at pickup time. I have since pulled them because I wasn’t happy with the after care program and my neighbor picks them up now but they are old enough to know to be quiet but they still will be noisy at worst time and I have to mute and yell for them to be quiet.
I also get less work done when they are home. Like next week for spring Break it will be torture for me only saving grace is I don’t have to worry about school!!

Prior to this mess nobody, and I mean nobody, was permitted to work from home. You could take work home and work after hours, but Monday-Friday you had to be in the office or take sick/vacation/personal time. Our ED was convinced that working from home was a euphemism for goofing off.
This is DH's company as well although he generally was able to leave work at work.
But working from home was always looked down upon.
Fast forward to the plague and he hasn't been allowed to set foot in his office in over a year now.
We're hoping they see how much more productive his department is and become more flexible in response.
To answer the OP, he recently heard there will be a phased in return after Labor Day.

Yes, I can't imagine what Manhattan is like with no one around! And, I agree that at some point, people will go back to the office. I don't think it will be like this forever. But, I also don't think it will go back to pre-pandemic levels.

We were told we aren't going back. Our building was sold and our positions are now 100% remote. I do love being home when my kids get home from school, but I do miss the office, my co-workers, and putting on make-up.

Pretty much the same with where I work. I have 2 bosses - one very flexible and understanding and the other not at all. The "not at all one" is the one who I do work for but the more understanding one is my "real" boss - but my work location is where the other one is situated. Last March my "real boss" was telling everyone to work from home as of March 16th. Meanwhile, my local boss was still having 15 people meetings in very small conference rooms. When I told him I was going to start working from home, he basically reamed me out and all but said he knew I'd be sitting around eating bon bons and watching Oprah every day. Prior to the pandemic, he would never let anyone work from home and he still hates it. Even though he has seen that we can and do work from home very effectively, I am sure he will not permit it for any reason, once we are all back in the office

Yep I thought I was the only one still sitting home every single day. I do see more traffic on the roads and I do see office parking lots getting full again.
I think that's because even though less people are working in office, more are driving rather than taking public transportation.

That is why they are all moving out to Long Island. My husband does real estate on the side, and 90 percent of the buyers are from the city.

I just got back from the city. Subway was as crowded as ever. Grand central not so much so maybe not many commuting in from the ‘burbs. But the city itself? Looks pretty normal to me. My old bagel place had its usual line and the local playground was full of kids.

While I miss the office and speaking with co-workers, etc I do not miss my commute which was over an hour each way and the LIRR is horrible and expensive. I gain hours back each week not commuting and save the money from not commuting. I'm also saving money on childcare since I am not paying for after school programs, and childcare on school breaks since I am not commuting at the moment.
I'm a manager in my office and I do see that most people are productive and getting the work done at home. The slackers were also slackers in the office for the most part. I am getting more done because I am not constantly interrupted by people coming into my office to chat.
My friends that work in the finance sector brag that they are keeping downtown alive because Wall stret is unable to work from home and they get take out lunches, etc.
The LIRR cut service and trains are more overcrowded than ever. The time I've gained and money I've saved to me is worth not going into the office everyday.

I couldn't agree with you more, but where I work, it's more of an individual Director/Manger decision than it is an organizational decision. Unfortunately, there are many (like my a$$hole boss) who will never change their minds on this issue.

100%! I always ran out of sick time halfway through the year because I had to use my own time when I was sick or my kids were sick at all. My DH could not take off as he would be unpaid. I have PILES of sick and vacation time piling up since working remote because I can work from home through a cold or with my kid sick and still get my job done rather than just taking a full day.

A big concern some people i have spoken to with jobs becoming permanent wfh, especially those with large salaries , is that anyone , anywhere can take your place for a lot less. Why would an employer pay someone 6 figures in NY if they can hire someone with the similar education and experience for half the price in the Midwest?

Yes. And in the end of may but not right now. Plus people are selling and moving like crazy. I know of 3 separate families who are selling (1 has sold) and moving to the Carolinas and FL with their N.Y. wfh salaries. At least they are making $$$$ on their LI homes to get them there. But to depend on a N.Y. salary while wfh in FL could backfire. It’s been a topic in my circle for a while now

I couldn't agree with you more, but where I work, it's more of an individual Director/Manger decision than it is an organizational decision. Unfortunately, there are many (like my a$$hole boss) who will never change their minds on this issue.
my friend's job was like this. She WFH a few days/week at our old job, and got a new job doing the exact same thing, but the boss wouldn't allow any WFH time, and then this hoit & they weren't at all prepared. They couldn't easily remote into their network.
And yes, there are plenty of times, where I have been well enough to work, but I was probably spreading cold germs, that would be better kept at home. Hopefully that will be more respected in the future.

A big concern some people i have spoken to with jobs becoming permanent wfh, especially those with large salaries , is that anyone , anywhere can take your place for a lot less. Why would an employer pay someone 6 figures in NY if they can hire someone with the similar education and experience for half the price in the Midwest?

Absolutely true. We moved to a smaller city, still expensive but not as bad as NYC. The salaries are literally half. Each household has 2 working adults , side gigs, and creative child care ( very young kids home alone!!!!). WFH is not a good thing for salaries. It’s also very hard to find a job in places like NC and FL since so many people are flocking. Companies don’t need to pay well, too many applicants for one position
