Organ damage caused by COVID-19
Although COVID-19 is seen as a disease that primarily affects the lungs, it can damage many other organs as well. This organ damage may increase the risk of long-term health problems. Organs that may be affected by COVID-19 include:
Heart. Imaging tests taken months after recovery from COVID-19 have shown lasting damage to the heart muscle, even in people who experienced only mild COVID-19 symptoms. This may increase the risk of heart failure or other heart complications in the future.
Lungs. The type of pneumonia often associated with COVID-19 can cause long-standing damage to the tiny air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs. The resulting scar tissue can lead to long-term breathing problems.
Brain. Even in young people, COVID-19 can cause strokes, seizures and Guillain-Barre syndrome — a condition that causes temporary paralysis. COVID-19 may also increase the risk of developing Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.

It's not just about surviving the disease. I'm personally trying to avoid it to avoid these long-term side-effects. These concern me much more than the short-term virus itself.

Why is this so complicated for many to understand???? Most will survive, MANY will suffer secondary health issues. Almost everyone I know who has had it, almost all in their 30s to 50s, are STILL having health issues MONTHS later. That's scarier then anything IMO.

This is why I chose to get the vaccine. I was on the fence for a long time, but after seeing many people I work with get the virus and months later still having some issues.
I am more concerned of the long term effects of the virus (if I ever got it), than the long term effects of the vaccine.

This is why I chose to get the vaccine. I was on the fence for a long time, but after seeing many people I work with get the virus and months later still having some issues.
I am more concerned of the long term effects of the virus (if I ever got it), than the long term effects of the vaccine.

Exactly - I was trying to tell that to my mom bc she said "If it's my time, then it's my time." I told her I have NO desire to have to relearn to walk and have a lifetime of breathing issues. She said she never thought of it that way. Sheesh!

When buying a car, do you study the possible radioactivity poisoning you might get from your car? If not, why not?
Getting Covid has been PROVEN to cause long-term scarring and organ damage in some people. Why open yourself to possible PROVEN long-term damage vs ZERO proof of any imagined long-term effects.
Maybe this vaccine will also eliminate cancer long-term. Maybe it will prevent grey hair and wrinkles. Let's just make up a list of things we *think* *may* happen.
OR, we could focus on the actual science that is published and corroborated and vetted.

So here is my question when I read articles about the long term effects.
I've been reading, and it's mentioned on the Texas thread I think- that the point of the vaccine is to prevent more severe symptoms and hospitalization and deaths etc. They were saying that you can still get Covid with it, which is why vaccinated people still have to wear masks, but that if you get it you will have much milder symptoms with the vaccine.
Ok great. Sounds good.
But this article is saying that even people who had Covid with mild symptoms and weren't very sick are showing up with all these awful long term health issues from it- right?
So if that is the case- and you are vaccinated- and you get Covid but it's super mild and like a head cold let's say- won't you still be subject to these possible long term effects?

Most viruses carry long term side effects for a select few people. It's just that you don't hear about them every day. The large majority of people will get covid and recover with no issues the same the large majority will recover from any virus with no issues. Research long term effects of the flu. There are also very serious long term effects in some children from chicken pox, but there I was in 1983 at a chicken pox party hoping to catch it. This is nothing new. Acting like long term side effects from a viral infection is new is absurd. The chance that you contract covid and have long term side effects is close to zero. People need to stop thinking about all the what-ifs. What if I trip down the stairs and break my neck? Happens to people every day but I don't avoid stairs for the rest of my life so it doesn't happen to me.

Maybe not. If the vaccine prevents more severe cases and lessens the time you're sick then that's less time COVID is in your system causing havoc. The more mild the symptoms, the less damage that's done.
Any protection is better than nothing IMO.
I have a friend, healthy adult age 45, and he contracted COVID early on. He almost died. He survived but ended up on oxygen for over 10 months after he "got better". He still has breathing issues and fatigues easily. It's so scary.

I mean out of the millions that have had Covid this year in the world, how many really had to learn to walk again?
I assume it's like anything else- a rare side effect
Just like some people get a bad side effect from a drug or a vaccine or whatever, and that's why when you see these commercials for meds they list like 100 scary side effects- to the point where you are like, why on EARTH would you chose to take this med- but the truth is, those side effects are very very rare

Exactly and everyone’s immune system is different, their genetics come into play, the way they take care of themselves.
I have recovered from some colds faster than others and twice I had pneumonia.

Do you have any articles that show that MANY will suffer secondary health issues? I can't find any studies on the % of people. Unlike you, I know probably north of 50 people who have had Covid at this point as my town is a hot bed of Covid and none of them are having any serious long term complications from Covid. Including my two 80 something neighbors. That's why I don't like to use my little circle or people to try to paint a picture of what is actually happening.

Yes - you still need to wear a mask after getting the vaccine, but I think that it's more important in the long run for most people to get the vaccine so that COVID isn't around as much and those that aren't vaccinated aren't as likely to get it once everything opens back up. It's like measles - it's still out there, but most people aren't getting it b/c they're vaccinated. But when you have a large group of people that aren't vaccinated - then it spreads again (like the widespread cases a few years ago at Disney).

Kind of like birth control. There is always that small percentage of people that get pregnant. Nothing in life will ever be 100% and some people will always have issues no matter if it is genetic or if they don’t take care of themselves.

Little known fact - the flu and many other viruses cause viral cardiomyopathy. I know two people who have died from this. One was an otherwise healthy 3 year old boy. The other was a 32 year old, very fit male. People die from viruses every day. Just because I happen to know two people that died from it doesn't mean MANY people die of it. It just happens and it's unfortunate.

Okay but MOST people with covid are not hospitalized with covid. So I am not even going to bother reading this article. Of course those people will have longer term side effects. Anyone who is hospitalized from any illness will. Show me something with the actual % of ALL people who had covid and recovered and are now suffering long term effects. I know no one. Of course it happens but again it is not common.
And it's 76% of those HOSPITALIZED.

Long term damage from Covid
I know someone who had a "mild" case of Covid. She said if it wasn't for the fact that she lost her sense of smell and taste, she wouldn't even have known she had it. That was April 2020. She still doesn't have her sense of taste or smell and her doctors are saying she may never regain it. Another friend and her 20 something year old daughter also had it. Both cases considered mild. Daughter was over it and testing negative within 10 days. BFF tested negative @ 2.5 weeks after initial positive test, but couldn't make it through a full day of work without a headache or a nap for 3 full months. She is now almost 6 months past her negative test and at least once a week can't make it through a full day of work without a nap. She gets killer migraines now that she didn't before. There are all sorts of after effects from Covid that science is studying.

Came across THIS article. Thought I would share.
I'm sure in the coming months/years we'll continue to learn more about the after effects of COVID. If seemingly healthy people before COVID can suffer post COVID health issues, just think how much more detrimental it could be to those with pre-existing conditions. This virus sucks.
