Everyone wants normal life back but it's really not as simple as "open it all up". The notion that we can open it all up and trust people to do the right thing is wishful thinking.
We're not on lockdown, most things are open in some capacity and soon enough we'll get to a point where life will be more normal. We have to give the vaccines a chance to do their job.

Again FL is mostly open, as well as other states. Let’s see how TX and MI do.
CA is locked down and their numbers are not going down.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/abc7news.com/amp/california-covid-19-cases-decline-latest-bay-area/10360615/

California cases are down drastically from the December and January surge.
Florida also has the most varient cases in the US.
And, new york is pretty open. People act like we are in strict lockdown.

I am not sure why people keep whining about opening the schools, schools have been open since September. Most things are open, just not venues which draw large crowds together. I am sick of COVID but it's certainly a thousand times better than this time last year.

Because some schools are still not open. And many kids aren't going to school much at all. My one son (in 3rd grade) just got a 3rd day a week and my other son (in 5th grade) will be starting 3 days every other week next week. So to me, although they are open, I don't think that's good enough.

And that's another thing that is bullshitt with this whole disaster. Why are districts in the same state open, others hybrid, others remote? Why is my DD in school full time since Sept and others in elementary are not? There needs to be consistency throughout the state. It's not fair. Why can some schools be open and not others in the same state?

What I cannot understand is we live in a small, more rural town now and our district is so small. (10-11 kids per class) We have had next to no cases of COVID or deaths here but they still aren't back for a full day, it's frustrating. If cases were really high and there were many instances of COVID in the school I would understand, but nothing is going on around here. Hopefully soon they change the school hours.

Yeah that is not right. My DD has 17 kids in her class and they have been in since Sept every day and no spikes or anything. It's just so random how they figure this all out. And not fair.

There are still a lot of limitations and schools are one of them and it’s total bull crap. And as I said many many times before my communities and my people are the ones being impacted the most by these limitations. How come no one is ever woke about these things? But let’s discuss Mr. / Mrs. Potato some more.

Couldn’t agree more. The education system was already struggling big time in these communities. I cannot even imagine how much more it’s negatively impacting them for a whole year now. The system and those in power are seriously failing to provide a fair education and a fair shot at their future. Chat Icon

Sad to say but this whole thing comes down to privilege. We were talking today about how my company is still not letting us in the offices. After a year. But the poor guy who stocks the shelves in your supermarket, or the waiter in the restaurant or the bus boy, or the cashier at Target- has to go in and work with the public every day.
But our precious white collar lives are so much more important that our company has to protect us and make us stay home.
Sad...

In other news, the NYC variant has went from 12% of tested samples to 26% in one week. It is all over NY state, as well as in several states and countries. We don't know enough yet to know if it's a true variant of concern. But yes, let's open everything 100% and hope for the best. As long as the scared stay home, everything will be fine. I fear what happens when some of these people experience the terror and loss that comes with covid. Maybe then they will get it.

And then again, maybe not. I got a text from a friend last night to let me know her FIL passed from Covid - two weeks after her MIL passed from Covid. She already had two aunts in nursing homes die from Covid.

Between the aunts and in-laws passing from Covid she has . . . gone in through the back door in April 2020 (and every six weeks like clockwork since) to get her hair done, made sure to get her manicures, gone out to dinner weekly, had guests to her house - both indoor and outdoor - etc, etc. And when I refused to come to her house for a visit, she gave me attitude and told me "we are all going to die sometime" and I should just get over it and come hang out. How old were these people? Did they have issues before this? Did she give them covid? Do they know where they got it from?

I honestly don’t know why we can’t come in, even staggered days but I think my dept will push it as long as we can.

I don't want to quote everyone. We can go back to work - we are on a 2 day a week schedule. We were going one day a week but then schools shut down so we've been home. I have no issue with safety going back in (there were 4 of us in a huge area) but nobody else is so I don't see the point (and it was on days when the kids were in school so I was just as productive at home).

I agree. I'm super lazy so this does suit me in certain ways. And I do meet co-workers once a week for lunch and a "meeting" in a restaurant. But I guess because I tend to be lazy, I easily fall into a rut when I'm not forced to get up, get dressed, drive to work, wear nice clothes etc.
I think 3 days home and even just 2 days in an office would be great right now

Exactly and idk why people keep saying schools are open. No maybe your kids school is open but there are many many schools that are still full remote or crap hybrid model. This is over a year later where they have said schools aren’t the issue with research and data gathered from schools that are open.

My son is hybrid and he goes more than most but I am not going to say life is back to normal and kids are in school based off of my situation alone.

There are still a lot of limitations and schools are one of them and it’s total bull crap. And as I said many many times before my communities and my people are the ones being impacted the most by these limitations. How come no one is ever woke about these things? But let’s discuss Mr. / Mrs. Potato some more.

Eta: also let’s not forget the crap that was Hurricane Sandy. .. the tri-state area sucked with that. I compare Texas and the Country’s actions on their ice storms to how we handled Hurricane Sandy. Or the little storm in 2019 that we didn’t prepare for and caused major accidents in the bridges and tunnels. Delaying commuters, that it took 8hrs for people to get home. All because we didn’t salt the roads and prepare for it.

Agreed - I think the people most upset are the people with middle and high school kids who are not back at school full time.

Also I brought that up yesterday. I don't know anyone that lives in NY that can talk about the problems in Texas. Our electrical infrastructure is probably one of the worst out there!

The infrasfructure of the country as a whole is decrepit and pitifully unprepared for the upward trend of natural disasters. TX is just one example because they use a closed off system that isn't able to receive power from neighboring states. They were warned after previous storms, but failed to upgrade their infrastructure.

Not all schools in the state are open which is unfair. Why are some districts able to have full time while others aren't. I get size of district varies, but after a year accommodations should be made where needed to bring all kids back to full time. And it's the job of our elected officials to come up with that plan. It's long overdue.

Not all schools in the state are open which is unfair. Why are some districts able to have full time while others aren't. I get size of district varies, but after a year accommodations should be made where needed to bring all kids back to full time. And it's the job of our elected officials to come up with that plan. It's long overdue.

I have no doubt that this all comes down to money and resources. I don't think poorer districts have the means to make the necessary accommodations in order to open full time.

Yeah - I'm not in a poorer district and no schools are open full time. No schools in my county are open full time (except privates). I think it also depends on interpretation of the rules - it seems many schools/county DOH are interpreting the rules a bit differently.

ETA - Our district views the plexiglass partitions as a fire hazard so they don't use them.

Genuine question- all of you who won't get the vaccine but also want everything 100% open, what do you suggest the elderly and immunocompromised people do? Stay inside for years so you can live your best life?

They are the first to get it so not sure why that is even a question.

In every single one of your posts you write how people are sheep led to slaughter for taking the vaccine, nobody knows the effects, nobody knows the efficacy, nobody knows anything, and then *THIS* is your answer??

You in every single post: "Hey everybody! Shut off your TVs and stop watching the news already. The media has corrupted your last brain cell! You're all morons! This vaccine is poison and anyone running to be first in line to get it is a straight up illiterate idiot who lacks a functioning brain and a rational thought process!"

Also you: "But, sure let's give it to the elderly and immunocompromised first so we can open up! Works for me! Let's sacrifice the lambs."

I see your advice doesn't apply to this group. If they get the vaccine it conveniences you.

Thanks but before you try and quote me, actually quote me as I never said any of this so your idea of trying to make me look horrible is not working.

They are the first to be able to get it or one of the first and that is also their choice. I am allowed to have an opinion but I am not nasty like many on this board and call people names.

I'm not trying to make you look horrible. I'm also not being nasty or calling you names. These are basically direct quotes that you post over and over like you're being paid to. I'm just pointing out your contradictions. If this population gets vaccinated it's a benefit to you, so you're a little less inclined to attach your warnings. It makes sense though. Everything in life is a choice - including the words we choose to use.

“Basically” is not actual quotes. I get you don’t like if I call someone a sheep or disagree about the vaccine. Still not the same as calling someone a moron. I don’t like when people put words in my mouth and put it out there that I called someone a name as I don’t do that.
You know the search engine is so easy to use. I don’t get why people don’t know how to use it.

What does 'sheep' mean to you when you call someone by that term? I actually have no opinion on the vaccine so it doesn't bother me in the least if you disagree about the vaccine. I'm not calling you out in defense of the vaccine or in defense of those that choose to get it, or those that choose not to get it whatever anyone's reasoning may be. I'm pointing out your contradictions and the words you choose to express your difference of opinion.

Are the elderly and immunocompromised 'sheep' if they choose to get the vaccine? Because it sounds like under your logic they're sheep if they choose to get the vaccine.

“person who is too easily influenced or led.”
Could be anyone for anything.

My mother is considered “elderly” but I would say she is as healthy as a young person or even healthier and she is being a sheep as she is listening to her friend more than herself as she has said over and over she will not get the vaccine. She can do what she wants but I don’t agree with her decision.

Never once would I call her a moron or anyone else. You think it is fine to “paraphrase” things I said but I don’t take it lightly people saying things I have not said.

And, new york is pretty open. People act like we are in strict lockdown.

I am not sure why people keep whining about opening the schools, schools have been open since September. Most things are open, just not venues which draw large crowds together. I am sick of COVID but it's certainly a thousand times better than this time last year.

I don’t think that’s always the case. There are several districts in NY that are the complete opposite of poor where money is not a problem and they still have not open FT.

I do think it's a factor in some schools along with countless other reasons. The good news is, I think by September this will be a non-issue. I gave up any expectations for the 2020/2021 school year and I'm looking ahead to September. Chat Icon

Many are starting to open so hopefully many will before June.
I am so glad I will be done this year. These kids are losing out on so much.

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

How old were these people? Did they have issues before this? Did she give them covid? Do they know where they got it from?

What a disgusting thing to say. You seem to believe this ONLY kills elderly and immunocompromised people. Which is a very ignorant way to think. If you even knew the amount of very young, very healthy people who have died from this. Who the hell cares how old they were? Or what their medical history was? Old people dying is not less tragic than young people. I am sorry, you don't like being called names but you come across as a cold and callous monster who only cares about herself.
How about instead of telling me to stop watching the news, why don't you start? Because you sound like you know absolutely nothing about the reality of this. I live my life and am not living in fear. My family does more than you realize. Every doctor and scientist under the sun says that what states are currently doing is a big mistake. But VB baby knows better than anyone else and needs everything to open up now, but don't be a sheep and inject the poison into your veins...because you know...MY RIGHTS.
