I haven’t read the books being pulled but if they are racists books then just because it’s been around forever doesn’t mean it was ever OK.

That’s how I see some of the issues being done. Do I think some of the things being done are over the top yes but some are justifiable.

I do not allow Dr. Seuss books in my home. One of his stories flat out shows pictures depicting Asians eating with chopsticks and carrying circus tigers above their heads. Underneath the picture it says "those with slanted eyes". Removing a book like that is not nonsense.
He was a very talented man, but that doesn't change the fact that much of what he wrote had racist undertones.

Do you have a picture of that? Do Asians not eat with chopsticks? I am confused.

Not only Asians eat with chopsticks. We are white and my family uses them whenever we eat Chinese or Thai.
A reference to the shape of their eyes and the way they are portrayed in this book is offensive. It is easy for us to say it is not- because we are not Asian.

How can that description be racist? It’s a way to facially describe people from some countries in Asia. Would it matter if he said black, straight hair instead? It’s just a way to describe. There are countless of ways to actually describe someone with offensive words but that’s not the case here. Using chopsticks is part of their culture and tigers are very sacred animals (and symbol) for Chinese people for example. How’s that offensive?? I’m a minority and I seriously just don’t get all the sensitivity and the intolerance that’s happening right now even in places where there’s none. I’m my country, there’s a lot of diversity. We have native tribes that color their hair orange, or prefer not to cover their breasts (in the case of women), or purposely make their ear lobes big, etc. It’s all part of their culture within their tribe and part of the collective culture as a whole in my country. If dr Seuss decided to incorporate an illustration based on one of the tribes in my country, I’d not find it offensive at all. If that illustrated character had orange hair with big earlobe holes, I’d not find it disrespectful at all. He’s not using it as a matter of discriminating, and he’s not describing them in a ridiculizing way. I really think this cancel culture is really getting out of control.

I almost feel like people go out of their way to LOOK for issues that aren't there. Like, what can I find if I dig in this book that I can say is offensive to xyz people so I can ban it and feel like I'm so perfect and so much better than the people who don't see it that way.

Yep just like they want to ban Grease. You can pick apart every book and movie and find something someone will be offended by.
How about 50 shades? That is ok? How about trying to get rid of child porn and child slavery first.

I guess I just don't see what the big deal is. You can still buy the book, so if you want it, order it.
Nobody is canceling Dr. Seuss. Most of his titles are still being published.
Read Across America started to distance itself from Dr. Seuss in 2019, so this has nothing to do with Biden.
Do I think it may be silly that they took Mr out of potato head? Yes. Changing the name of Aunt Jemima? Maybe I personally don't get why they changed the name.
But at the end of the day it has no bearing on my day to day life. Just because Asians you know aren't offended doesn't mean they don't exist. I personally will not allow my children to own Dr. Seuss books, but I don't care what anyone else does.
They weren't even his popular titles anyway. I doubt anyone will miss them.

Are you referring to the book "That I saw it on Mulberry Street?"
Hmmmm, I am looking at the page now, and all I see is an Chinese man eating with chopsticks. It does NOT say anything written about him having slanty eyes? Nor is there a tiger on his shoulder? Just says a Chinese man eating with chopsticks? How is that racist?
Or are you referring to a different book?

Just as an FYI the entity that the right says “cancelled” Suess is... Suess Enterprises...the company that manages his work. They announced it on his 117th “birthday.”

So Suess kind of cancelled Suess here. No one else.

She was referring to “If I ran the zoo”. But the Mulberry Street book is also being scrutinized. Sadly both books, among others, will not be published anymore.

This is the sentence...”I’ll hunt in the mountains of Zomba-ma-Tant with helpers who all wear their eyes at a slant...”

Exactly just like every other commercial on TV now has mixed racial couples and same gender couples. Neither of those bother me but they feel like if they don’t appease to every.single.human.being their company will be in jeopardy. It is ridiculous.

In one of his “cartoons”, it “features a crowd of men rendered in classic blackface caricature, with dark skin and pronounced red lips, being presented to a white shopper. A sign reads: “A n—- for your woodpile.”

Dr. Seuss most definitely wrote many of his books with a racist undertone. Not everyone will be bothered by it, and that's fine.
Yes, there are some great ones- The Lorax and Oh the Places You'll Go come to mind.
But that doesn't mean some of his work wasn't offensive. Another cartoon of his depicts a man reading a book to Sally and the boy from The Cat in the Hat. The caption is "and the wolf chewed up the children and spit out their bones, but those were foreign children so it didn't really matter."

Yeah. Him writing racist stuff (like using the N word and depicting black people in a racist way, as I mentioned in my one single example of many) does not make me want to celebrate his works or defend them (or him).

I don’t think of a picking books for a children’s personal collection and wanting the overrated and racist writer who used the N word and created racist cartoons.

There are far better children authors out there to seek and select from, ones who weren’t biased/racist.

I don’t see it as canceling but more muffling and finding better voices to elevate.

It is from a comic strip. But, IMO, someone who thought was appropriate to create and publish, should not necessarily be celebrated and hailed a hero of children's literature.
