Stony Brook vax site

Just wanted to clear up some Stony Brook vax site confusion...

According to the appointment confirmation I just received, the vaccinations will be distributed at 1500 Stony Brook Road. This is neither at the hospital nor the union, it’s at the tech center on Stony Brook road across from the south P lot.

I got my BS from SB...class of 1990! Fun to see other SB alumni here

Are there clear signs directing you the site? My parents will be driving themselves there, so just wondering if it will be easy for them.

Not sure if there are signs (haven't been by there this week), but as you head down Stony Brook Road, you got past the right turn onto the campus (P-Lot) and a little further down there is a Stony Brook sign on the left - that's where you turn in

Re: Stony Brook vax site

Just wanted to give the heads up to anyone going to SB for the vaccine. I took my mom to her appointment today. There are clear electronic signs directing you where to pull in. You must have your appointment confirmation (either the printout or on your phone). You pull into the lot and show this at the first checkpoint.

Then they tell you to make a u-turn out of the parking lot and head back out to stony brook road, making a right turn by a second police check point where you have to show everything again. Then you drive through the back road (about a mile) and come back through the parking lot they told you to make a u-turn out of. ??

When you get there you are met by another group of national guardsmen where you show all your documentation again and are checked off on their list. You are given a folder with a packet of forms to fill out (even if you did them online) and directed to park. You go through a final checkpoint heading into the parking area.

Once the paperwork is filled out you can go into the building. They confirm your paperwork at the door and then you have your temperature taken. You then go to a desk where they take some of your paperwork and check your ID again. They give you your next appointment there. You are then told to head to vaccination area and get the shot. They give you the card stating you have had the first dose. Then you head into the observation area where you hand in your paperwork and sit for 15 minutes and then you can go.

All in all the actual vaccination process was a breeze but the checkpoints were a pain in the butt

Woww that sounds insane. Thank you for the heads up!! How long did this process take from start to finish ? Also, was your mom given Pfizer or Moderna?

From start to finish it was one hour. Not bad at all just a lot of checking and rechecking of ID and appointment confirmation - I wonder if it was due to all of the cancelled appointments.

She received the Pfizer shot.

Her appointment was for 4:00. We got there (to the first checkpoint) at around 3:35. Made it into the building by around 4:10 and walked out at 4:30

Honestly, the biggest time drain was the different checkpoints and having to enter the parking lot only to leave it, drive another mile or two and then re-enter the same place you were!

Oh and then you have to fill out all of the paperwork and answer all of the questions that you already answered online.

And they did ask for insurance information, so make sure you bring that with you.

Once inside the building, it as a well-oiled smooth operation though. That was the easiest and quickest part of the whole process.

My mom got her second shot Tuesday at SB.

Per the signage inside, they are administering the Pfizer shot.

The checkpoints were still there. You turn into 1500 Stony Brook Road, a cop will tell you to make a u-turn out of the parking lot and make a right back onto Stony Brook Road. You then go to the second checkpoint, see another cop, drive about 1-2 miles on that back road (be careful it was full of potholes) and come back right to where you originally pulled in where the national guard will confirm your appointment and give you paperwork to fill out in your car. Then you head in to the building.

Once you get into the parking lot, it's really a well-oiled machine. The checkpoints and u-turn are a bit much though.

Good luck

Why do they make you drive in a circle? What's the point?

I'm wondering this too. They literally just stab you in the arm and then you wait 15 minutes to leave whether you are in a car or in a tent. I would have preferred to be in my car to have less interactions with people.

She just told me that being that its a new vaccine she feels like everyone should be monitored and that if you are alone in your car and are the minority that has a reaction, you may not get the help you need. She was also against pharmacies administering it because of their lack of equipment and emergency training.

For myself, whatever lol. I'm just going to go wherever I can get an appointment.

Your details were SPOT ON. As I was driving down the back roads, I was literally thinking to myself “ok, these are the huge potholes she was talking about”Chat Icon I was literally in and out of the building.. they did a fantastic job with everything.

Also, just so you know your appointment time doesn't matter. They just check the date. So if your time is inconvenient, you can really just go whenever, on that date. Same for Javits.

Thanks! That’s great to know, I have a late afternoon appt at Javits on a Sunday.

ETA - it’s also the same at Westchester County Center.
