I think people do not really know what it is like to be part of the working poor. Honestly I do not either but I have family members who fall into this category. Most of these people are the hardest working people you’ll ever meet. My aunt one year donated to her kids’ food drive and then wound up being the receipent of the food basket. She had nothing but always wanted to help out people who were needier than her. When I told her I was pregnant after dealing with IF for years, she bought me a few baby things from dollar general. People like this deserve to be able to earn enough money to live a decent life. Unfortunately, she has since passed away from cancer. She never owned a car or home. She never went on a vacation. She never got her nails done or her haircut. I think many people in the working poor category are living a life like this. They’re not trying to keep up, they’re trying to survive.

That’s why I advocate for $20+ an hour.

The majority of people don’t have enough in savings to cover a sudden emergency.

The majority of people in America make about $47k a year.

It’s unacceptable.

There’s enough for everyone. There needs to be wealth redistribution.

Read the story above and you will see why this won’t work

Actually my story was to say that if my aunt and her husband were both earning $20/hour they could’ve afforded things that everyday people consider normal like haircut. Instead they were straddling the poverty line for her entire life.

Exactly. I got your point and I wish your aunt and her husband had been paid deservedly so. No one should be underpaid in the “richest country in the world.”

VB looked like she understood and was sympathetic to you post with her giving sad face, but it appears she still doesn’t believe people should get $20 an hour.

Yes, I agree. Most people do not know people living in this type of situation.

$20 is a lot and many won’t work up to par to make that much and unfortunately companies can not afford this.

I absolutely do and for many reasons. What did they do for a living and why did they have to live like this?

It is very sad and we all make choices in our lives. I could have continued with more college and I have gotten jobs that require a BA with experience.

Not everyone can go to college. Not everyone has money for that. My mom and her siblings grew up in poverty because my grandmother had terminal cancer which racked up HUGE medical bills. My grandfather had to take on insane debt and they moved from a “great” town to one that almost everyone on LIF would consider undesirable. They had no money. This is how she started her adult life. My mom literally acted in the mom role for my aunt from the age of 12 when she found her mother dead on the floor afterschool. Get off your high horse.

Are you trying to say that someone who has worked their butt off and build a successful business should live like a poor person?

Literally no one is saying that. But boy do you sound offended at the thought of someone you feel should be above others living below them.

And it does sound like you're saying (over and over again) that poor people should work their butt off and still live like poor people and deserve to have their labor exploited by those that employ them. Message received.

No high horse. My MIL had 3 kids by 21 and a husband who left her when her 3rd was 1 month old with no job. They all lived a harder life than many. Cousins took care of siblings while mother was drunk all the time. People getting financial breaks and wasting it. People who never get breaks in life. I have seen it all.

That’s how it comes across to me, as well. I may be wrong though.

I think in general, in all situations in life, the people who insist things can’t be done, change can’t happen because of this or that, or “this is the way it is/this is how it always is done” are the most inefficient of thinkers.

Not everyone has choices. Some people have no options. Flipping burgers is their only option. Some people don't have the money, time, ability, desire, strive, or MENTAL ABILITY to go to college or manage or lead others. Yup I said it. Not everyone is college or management material. Some people can only handle flipping burgers. Think back to your childhood. Were all your peers at the same level? Was everyone cut out to be a brain surgeon? Does that make them less worthy of others that are capable of more and deserving of eating cat food to survive? Those that go above and beyond in life deserve to be rewarded for their ambition and drive. But it shouldn't take away from those that can't to be able to carve out a decent basic existence for themselves. Do you know how many teachers are working poor in other states?? The people tasked with molding the minds of tomorrow working multiple jobs just to get by. Not to keep up with the jones'. Not to buy flashy cars and designer handbags. To get by. To survive. To not be homeless. How can they focus on their lessons and their students when they're exhausted from working all these hours at multiple jobs? It's sad really.

Nobody should be working poor in this the wealthiest nation in the world. It's a travesty.

i usually don't post on the politics board (because i don't feel i know enough about politics) but i do read the posts to educate myself, and i am so confused. you agree with one post and then agree with one that says the exact opposite. which is it?

you seem to say people need to educated to have a career (not a job) and then they will make the right money and "be successful."
i have two master's degrees and make barely above the national average. i don't own a home and probably never will. we bought our first new car this year and will be paying it off for a while. according to you, i have the right education but am a failure?
sorry, i don't want to work my butt of and take work home and be stressed over work all day. what i do want, is to be able to support my family and own a home. maybe if i had a higher minimum wage when i first started, i would have more saved by now.
and as for the walmart example, maybe you would be willing to work as a greeter if they paid you $20/hr but many people would not. i'd rather be poor than be treated the way the greeters are greeted by customers AND the company. my self-worth is more important than having money.

It is very sad and we all make choices in our lives. I could have continued with more college and I have gotten jobs that require a BA with experience.

MC...............Totally agree with everything you have said. Based on these comments, I too think that VB really isn't "getting it". She keeps contradicting herself on every post, it's too hard to follow where she stands. lol

Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan

I saw this and it seemed fitting.

When your position is both “People who can’t afford to go to college shouldn’t take out loans to do it” and “People who do jobs that don’t require a college degree shouldn’t be paid a living wage” it kind of starts to seem like you just want to keep poor people poor.

Re: Biden's 1.9 Trillion Dollar Plan

Just wanted to add that while not everyone has the financial option or cognitive ability to go to college or manage others or "work towards becoming ceo themselves" everyone is deserving of dignity and respect. Every job serves a purpose and adds value to a functioning society. The sanitation worker, the person flipping burgers, the person scrubbing toilets, and the person with a master's degree who lost their job and is now answering phones and delivering groceries to get by deserve just as much respect as the person who pays them. Honest work is honest work. Stop looking down on people. This thread is so classist.

You're going to say you didn't say it, but what you're saying here is pitterpatter's aunt was poor because of the choices she made. She chose to be poor. Poor people choose poverty. This is a gross comment.

He’s in Florida. They already passed the minimum wage to go up to $15 anyway.

ETA: Where does it say Biden will do away with tips and the tipped wage? Waitstaff make a lower amount than minimum wage because of tips. There is a different hourly wage for tipped employees. This article is false.

Yeah, I find it (“we all make choices in our lives”) extremely gross as well. It’s clear she just cannot relate. But you know she has a few designer handbags and made her life better or whatever she is mumbling on about. She cannot see the forest for the trees and can only see how things relate to herself.

i usually don't post on the politics board (because i don't feel i know enough about politics) but i do read the posts to educate myself, and i am so confused. you agree with one post and then agree with one that says the exact opposite. which is it?

you seem to say people need to educated to have a career (not a job) and then they will make the right money and "be successful."
i have two master's degrees and make barely above the national average. i don't own a home and probably never will. we bought our first new car this year and will be paying it off for a while. according to you, i have the right education but am a failure?
sorry, i don't want to work my butt of and take work home and be stressed over work all day. what i do want, is to be able to support my family and own a home. maybe if i had a higher minimum wage when i first started, i would have more saved by now.
and as for the walmart example, maybe you would be willing to work as a greeter if they paid you $20/hr but many people would not. i'd rather be poor than be treated the way the greeters are greeted by customers AND the company. my self-worth is more important than having money.

Do you live in NY?

i'm afraid to give you any details about myself as you seem to keep notes on posters and attack them for their life choices. i already gave you too much in my example.

Never said that, please don’t put words in my mouth.

This is EXACTLY how your comments are coming across.

If I am not mistaken, minimum wage is not the same for restaurants. It is much lower because they get tips.
