Sorry, but the kid bagging my groceries doesn’t deserve $20 an hour. The adult bagging my groceries deserves access to skills and knowledge to get them moved up to either a management position in their minimum wage JOB or another field.
Exactly. That only will have people try to do the minimum in life and no competition for jobs. Why should someone bagging groceries made a few dollars less than myself for the amount of work and years of experience I have? Why would I bother working my butt off, going over and beyond working more hours than needed, if I could work at an entry level job and make the same?

I think they only need 10 R’s to pass it. But I think they could resort to using a procedure where you only need a majority vote.

Mitch was shocked and now in a bad position. This then also put the two candidates in Georgia in a bad spot - they were advocates of $600 and not more. Now Trump wasn’t on the same page as them.
Mitch needed those two in GA to win to keep him as majority leader. So he sort of stuck by them and not Trump. Mostly just for himself.

I don’t think it works that way in the sense of a credit card bill. Someone else here can probably explain it better, but it’s nothing to lose sleep over, let’s put it that way.
The most pressing issue for future generations is environmental concerns. Mico plastics in the ocean, etc.
Where is all this money coming from though as we are in so much debt already? That’s the question.

Yes, I’m serious. There are countless people who do have minimum wage jobs as careers. People with various disabilities, special needs, or just regular folk.
I believe in a living wage for my fellow citizens, one that affords them a decent life and self-respect.
It is sad to me that people find $20 an hour as ridiculous but don’t bay an eye at a single male CEO making 80 million a year when his employees are on food stamps.
You do realize that many people with college degrees don’t even make that much or ones with 20 years of experience in a job. Why should my teenager make the same as someone who has been in the workforce their entire adult life or spent years in school getting degrees?

People with disabilities and special needs usually receive financial help.
I still think they would better off with an education and skills.
Our children are never going to be able to get jobs when they are older. They are going to be replaced by computers and automated services.
Isn’t that a concern for you? Looking ahead? It’s going to lead to more layoffs. Less job opportunities for those who lack the skills or education.

I actually do and want them to do the best they can but not work as a cashier to make the same amount of money that I do after 30 plus years of working. Mine won’t be with me until 30. They left for college and back and basically comes and goes as if they live on their own .

There needs to be more affordable education and access for all. Minimum wage JOBS need to be just that, a job. Not a career.
By 30 you shouldn’t be living at home paying off college loans making minimum wage. That needs to change.
I’ve said I’m other threads....this needs to start as early as high school. The whole system needs to be revamped.
And the mindset of people needs to change. We don’t need brand new cars, big new houses, new cell phones, etc...

Education absolutely needs to be more affordable as does healthcare. There are so many other countries that are doing better at both than us, we should follow their lead.

Absolutely as my 1st owes a ton of money and still going to school while the 2nd sees this and wants to start off with less debt. It is horrible for these kids to owe so much.

I don't know what you think is fishy but this is how it works:
Once the two Georgia winners plus Biden are sworn in, Mitch is out of power. He is Senate Minority Leader (thankfully) and no longer has the ability to let bills pile up on his desk and block legislation.
With that said, we can start to get things done. Most items are subject to the filibuster (majority of 60) which is why Biden and Schumer will need 10 Republicans. Republican policy is to funnel wealth upwards so they generally will not be for this policy. However, $15 mw is very popular and they know they will have to answer to their constituents if they refuse to deliver.
McConnell's speech of last week notwithstanding, he has proven himself to be a slimeball. He cares only about taking power back in 2022 - not whether or not Americans get their problems addressed - so he will rally his caucus in whatever way he sees fit to make that happen.
If he senses the winds are blowing in ways that make this very popular, my guess would be that he will straddle the fence and not push the point either way and see if ten go for it. He has to defend every seat and flip one so it may come down to which Repubs go for it and which don't.
Overall, I don't have high hopes but fortunately several other financial measures are not subject to the filibuster, including mandating that contractors with the federal government are paid $15 an hour.

Yep and I actually took a pay cut many many years ago but honestly while the pay is missed, I am so much less stressed so sometimes money is not the end all be all.

Inflation means everything increases. Minimum wage increases (or it should). Just above minimum increases, and each notch bumps up to the next notch.
It's been doing that since the 1940's.

I think they only need 10 R’s to pass it. But I think they could resort to using a procedure where you only need a majority vote.

I think it had to do with the Georgia run offs. Things had gotten messy. R’s wanted $600. Trump switched positions and wanted more. Dems agreed with Trump.
Mitch was shocked and now in a bad position. This then also put the two candidates in Georgia in a bad spot - they were advocates of $600 and not more. Now Trump wasn’t on the same page as them.
Mitch needed those two in GA to win to keep him as majority leader. So he sort of stuck by them and not Trump. Mostly just for himself.
Well if does agree this time, it sounds kind of fishy. Kind of like of wow look Biden got us more money
I don't know what you think is fishy but this is how it works:
Once the two Georgia winners plus Biden are sworn in, Mitch is out of power. He is Senate Minority Leader (thankfully) and no longer has the ability to let bills pile up on his desk and block legislation.
With that said, we can start to get things done. Most items are subject to the filibuster (majority of 60) which is why Biden and Schumer will need 10 Republicans. Republican policy is to funnel wealth upwards so they generally will not be for this policy. However, $15 mw is very popular and they know they will have to answer to their constituents if they refuse to deliver.
McConnell's speech of last week notwithstanding, he has proven himself to be a slimeball. He cares only about taking power back in 2022 - not whether or not Americans get their problems addressed - so he will rally his caucus in whatever way he sees fit to make that happen.
If he senses the winds are blowing in ways that make this very popular, my guess would be that he will straddle the fence and not push the point either way and see if ten go for it. He has to defend every seat and flip one so it may come down to which Repubs go for it and which don't.
Overall, I don't have high hopes but fortunately several other financial measures are not subject to the filibuster, including mandating that contractors with the federal government are paid $15 an hour.

Yes and unfortunately many don’t get raises for many years. I don’t want to have to pay more to get a burger and fries because they want to pay a 16 year old $15/hour.
Minimum wage isn't suppose to be "career wage" but $7 (in some places) is OBSCENE in 2021. I was making $6.50/hr as a cashier at Harrow's 26 years ago!! Minimum wage absolutely needs a bump, people should at least be able to put some food on the table after a 40 hr work week.
Teens are not the only ones working min wage jobs, many adults only have minimum wage jobs to get by. Some work 2-3 of them and still cannot make ends meet.

I lived in FL from 97-01, it was DIRT CHEAP to live there, minimum wage at the time was around $4.40/hr and I can assure, that was garbage money even in a place with a very low cost of living.
Realistically, minimum wage is off base from cost of living and inflation.

Realistically, minimum wage is off base from cost of living and inflation.
Many states have less COL, taxes at 1,000 year, houses for under $200,000. The only thing I have seen with these places is that food is about the same price (food stores). FL is not cheap anymore like it used to be.

Inflation means everything increases. Minimum wage increases (or it should). Just above minimum increases, and each notch bumps up to the next notch.

Minimum wage hasn't increased in almost 12 years. Do you think Cost of Living hasn't increased during those 11 years? People making minimum wage are earning LESS each year because it's less buying power.

Yes and unfortunately many don’t get raises for many years. I don’t want to have to pay more to get a burger and fries because they want to pay a 16 year old $15/hour.
Minimum wage isn't suppose to be "career wage" but $7 (in some places) is OBSCENE in 2021. I was making $6.50/hr as a cashier at Harrow's 26 years ago!! Minimum wage absolutely needs a bump, people should at least be able to put some food on the table after a 40 hr work week.
Teens are not the only ones working min wage jobs, many adults only have minimum wage jobs to get by. Some work 2-3 of them and still cannot make ends meet.
The places that are at $7 have very low rents, mortgages and taxes. That is why it equals out. I am all for higher minimum wages but I also can’t afford to pay more for things and want more people to be able to work. Layoffs will happen as they will not be able to afford to pay everyone $15/hour.
I lived in FL from 97-01, it was DIRT CHEAP to live there, minimum wage at the time was around $4.40/hr and I can assure, that was garbage money even in a place with a very low cost of living.

FL is still very cheap, I have many friends and family there.
Reality is, there is no way you can make $7/hr and afford a $200K house plus bills, food, car etc. Across the nation, there needs to be an increase because again, minimum wage is not aligned with COL or inflation.
