Maybe I'm just more of a private person and don't need to share my every move with the world.
And in terms of encouraging others, if I am not comfortable with the vaccine after doing research and speaking to my doctor, Karen getting it an posting on Facebook isn't going to suddenly change my mind.

The FB posting "encouragement" is not for people who do research and talk to doctors, it's for people who blindly follow what happens on FB. There are a lot of people who fall into that category.

Well they post it and then about twenty of their friends post how excited they are because they get to go next week to get theirs!

But I’m sure cuomo will write a sequel to his book on his perfectly executed vaccine rollout.

I often wonder what we did before social media.
I mean how did anyone survive without knowing what someone ate for lunch, what their steak dinner looked like, when they had a medical procedure, when they were in the ER, how busy they were today or what their very important opinion was on important social and political issues?
How did anyone function without constant likes and approvals from their friends and family and distance acquaintances?

LOOK AT ME!!!!!

i feel like it's more than that look at me. it's historical. we/they are surviving a pandemic, and we are social creatures in isolation. we're also recording our lives like never before.
before social media, it was emails, and before that we made phone calls & wrote letters....carrier pigeons.

i feel awful my 80 year old parents cant get an appt yet, but I don't blame the young teachers on my feed. I'm celebrating with them. also the , look its ok guys, I'm doing it too - that could help the weary.

we are surviving a pandemic. it's not going to look pretty.

I’d rather be celebrating 0 deaths. No new hospital admissions. Statistically speaking, those are mostly the elderly.

We know this vaccine isn’t going to eliminate covid. But it’s supposed to help lighten the load at the hospitals. That’s the goal right now. So wouldn’t you go after your target market....the elderly?? Not young healthy people who, according to statistics and science, don’t end up in the hospitals. And even if they are vaccinated they can still spread it to those elderly who aren’t vaccinated.

It’s like a budget right now. We knew what we were getting and overspent.

Does that surprise you at all given the state of the budget in NY and everything else that's a disaster in this state?

I think the issue is that this isn’t being handled by the federal govt. This has been put on each state.

We are in a global pandemic and need a federal response.

I can predict the words out of cuomo’s mouth at the next news conference....the federal government is to blame.

No you dodo YOU KNEW WHAT WE WERE GETTING. And it’s definitely not enough, but you knew. Today you even knew and opened up the stonybrook testing online knowing this.

We are stuck in the middle once again and the only losers here.

It needs to be fixed. It needs to be easier for seniors who can’t use technology to make an appointment.

Yep they have to take a picture of them getting the vaccine. Great for you BUT I am not liking your post. Sorry. So many need so much attention and this is just another thing that try to keep up with the crowd. I just don't get posting every single move you make on social media. I just don't get why people have to do this.
Get the vaccine if you would like, get it 10 times but you don't have to tell everyone just like I am not going to post like you said, every time you go and get a pap smear Chat Icon

I agree with you for the most part (I have elderly parents with conditions), but teachers are kind of front line workers. I don’t know any facts about it spreading in schools, so no comment there. I don’t know what the right answer is, really, but I am angry.

The thing that really pisses me off is they included 1b and now they can’t fulfill that. The whole trying to get an appointment is not elderly friendly.

Yeah I mean we can't have it both ways. So many people on this board were angry and frustrated with school closings and desperately wanted their kids in school... well now they're in school and the teachers, nurses, essential workers who have kept us afloat for the past year DESERVE this vaccination if they want it. My FIL is high risk and I really want him to go get vaccinated, but he's not eligible until 1C.

But you're right, it's very frustrating that they rolled out part 1B and don't have the facilities/appointments to let anyone in 1B actually get it. I feel like there's a lot of locations in the works but they should've been working on this months ago.

ETA: And I like that people are posting when they get the vaccine. It gives me an opportunity to ask what their experience was like from real life people that I know and trust. That might make the difference between someone deciding to get the shot or not.

Its crazy. The police are vaccinating their own people. So many people I know had appointments booked that were subsequently canceled because of a glitch. And they forget the east end as usual. Senior citizens with health conditions cant be expected to drive an hour plus to stony brook or Brentwood to have to get this vaccine. Its unbelievable what a shittshow this is. I think they added too many eligible categories at once and now they are overloaded...

I got mine last week and feel awful about it. I was all ready to make an appointment for my 92-year-old grandmother right when the appointments opened up. She lives by herself in the Bronx and is in good health. All of the locations were far from her and in areas of the Bronx that she doesn’t want to go to. I didn’t make an appointment for and figured it would open up. Now everything is taken up. I may feel trapped to some degree in my house but she really is. I even want to scream at my friends frustration over their parents in their 60s not getting their vaccine.

ITA with you.

I do not personally post on social media for the purpose of getting attention. I've basically grown up with social media, and it's just something that I do. I don't understand the sweeping generalizations about why people post on social media.

I also like the posting about getting the vaccine for the same reason. I posted, and I had a friend who is on the fence about the vaccine message me to talk it out. I also had people message me to ask about my experience, what to expect, etc., and I posted how and where I got an appointment, with the intention of providing this information to people who may need it.

Re: So disgusted with the vaccine distribution

I personally think that posting on FB about getting the vaccine is a good thing.
We need 75% (give or take, depending on what source you read, but the exact number isn't the point here) of people to get the vaccine to achieve "herd immunity".

Almost everyone is affected by what other people post or do on the Internet. On Amazon, I'm hesitant to buy a product with only 12 ratings. If there's 1,000 ratings, then I'm more likely to buy it.
That's the entire business model of Yelp and TripAdvisor.
Internet "influencers" make their money off of people following what they do online.

If posting that they got their shots on FB encourages just a few percent of people to get their shots, it gets us that much closer to our herd immunity numbers.

The distribution debacle is a whole other story....

Totally agree. As a teacher I was on the fence about getting the vaccine, however, I teach in one of the largest school districts (geographically) in Suffolk, and we have been in a hybrid model. In Feb. the kids will be coming 4 days a week, and we were told thousands are coming back. Yes, it has not been know to be transmitted in schools, because the kids have been able to social distance and the mask mandate. But now we are bring many back. Everyday we get cases from staff and students. I worry about the hallways, the buses, kids now having to eat lunch in our new gym. I want the kids back, because many are not doing so well, but I have a family too and I need to protect myself as well as them. It is a tough situation.
The whole thing is frustrating.

Plus we have had many healthy teachers get the virus and still weeks after are not feeling the same.So healthy or not, it effects many in different ways.

Well I can assure you myself and everyone else I know who do not plan to get it, are not encouraged by anyone else getting it so it is a moot point to us.
I guess people who follow the crowd and can't make decisions on their own might be encouraged though and that is why they want to hire more contract tracers to push the vaccine.

Which is why I said "encourages just a few percent of people". I explicitly didn't include people who don't follow the FB crowd. But like I mentioned in a previous post, we all know people who do, so it's definitely not a moot point to post it in general.

When I post about donating blood, I don't expect every single one of my FB friends to go out and donate the next day. Not by a long shot. I post so that *maybe* one person will decide to donate because of my post.

I agree with you 100%.

Honestly, I really want to hear everyone's experience with the vaccine because as someone who wants to get the vaccine I am still partly nervous about it as well. That being said, I appreciate everyone on LIF, FB and other social media who share their experiences because the more we hear about people having a good reaction to it, the more comfortable others will be in taking it themselves. I am hoping that as time goes on and more people get the vaccine we start to see drops in the number of cases and the severity of the spread, that too will ease people's minds about the efficacy.

Wanting to hear how others fared with the vaccine is certainly not "following the crowd" or an indication on one's inability to make decisions for themselves. I think we should all be learning together throughout this and the only way we will get the majority of the population to vaccinate is if we get them comfortable with it first. Seeing positive experiences of others certainly will help that. NO doubt.

Re: So disgusted with the vaccine distribution

If people posting their experience getting the vaccine gets us even one step closer to the 75% we need to get our lives back to even semi-normal then I'm all for it. Post away! How many posts do we see just on here asking about experiences in specific school districts from people looking to move or asking about experiences with a specific make and model of car from people wanting to buy a new car and wanting to hear other people's experiences first before they commit? Posting about getting the vaccine works the same way. It opens up a dialogue with people who are interested and want to hear more about it. Lots of people are set in their decision to get the vaccine or not, but there are also a lot of people waiting to hear how other people's experiences were first before deciding to commit or not. Just like with everything else, if it bothers (general) you to hear about it then skip the post.

People post lots of useless things on social media. Like so much uselessness. This isn't one of them imo. I'd take hearing about people getting the vaccine over seeing chronic selfie syndrome. (But honestly who cares what other people want to post on their page, ridiculous or not and everything in between?)

I agree that there needs to be a more efficient distribution so the most vulnerable are ahead of the line, but teachers are essential workers and if you want schools open then teachers need to be at the head of that line too.

Thanks for sharing this link. I see this is a new realease in vitro study with certain strains. I’ll def look more into it. But the claim of preventing covid (like the CNN article u posted) started way before Pfizer published their new in vitro study.

So disgusted with the vaccine distribution

There is no question that the distribution is a hot mess. But, parents want schools open. You can't expect schools to be open and not have teachers towards the front of the line. Schools need to be open. More than restaurants, malls, theatres, and most other things. So, vaccinate the teachers and get children back to school full time.
As for social media...I personally will not be posting that I got mine tonight. But, I don't care if someone else does. People are very bothered by what others post on social media. Who really cares?

Thanks for sharing this link. I see this is a new realease in vitro study with certain strains. I’ll def look more into it. But the claim of preventing covid (like the CNN article u posted) started way before Pfizer published their new in vitro study.

The CNN article was about the Moderna vaccine, which posted their info on preventing Covid before Pfizer. Moderna published their info in December.

I 100% agree that teachers need to be near the front because schools need to be open. But I do think anyone 75 and over should have had the opportunity first. Because that is the group with the worst outcomes- regardless of anything else.
The fact that people in that age bracket are struggling to get their vaccine as younger people (regardless of profession) are breezing in in front of them- is what is wrong here.
