Oops you are correct. My mistake. I literally knew this, had a brain blip. LOL But yes, coronaviruses have been around for a long time. 
This one is somewhat similar to SARS, which was in 2003, so they've been studying a virus very much like COVID-19 for 17 years.

I don't doubt it was here before February but it certainly wasn't widespread until March.
That aside, I am confused as to this tangent and what your point is. You posted to say "why should anyone worry about getting COVID if they have made it all year without it". My reply was that the fact that you haven't been sick up until this point doesn't mean you can't get it. EVERYONE should continue to worry as nothing is better and in fact, it's far worse. Until the vaccine is readily available and the majority take it we will continue to be on edge and not be able to live life normally.

Have you seen the explosion in numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths? I know MANY people who have gotten COVID in just the last month. People who are very careful and do not do anything other than go to work and the grocery store. Just because you haven't gotten it yet, does not mean you won't.
As for the vaccine, I have an appointment for Friday evening. I am a teacher in NYC. I am not concerned I will get COVID. I am young, healthy, and have zero underlying conditions. I would most likely be fine. I am doing it for the good of society. I am not getting this vaccine so I won't get COVID. I am getting this vaccine so many others who are high risk will not get COVID.
I'm very confused about this. I've been very vocal about my hesitation to take the vaccine, and one of the reasons is the "herd immunity" theory.
They are unsure if you can still pass covid onto someone if you have the vaccine. How do we then establish "herd immunity?" Am I misunderstanding something?

No, no one could be 100% they had it but when you have had many of the symptoms and some tested for the flu and came back negative multiple times, it seems quite odd.
It was really bad for many so unless you knew anyone who were sick before this came about and there was no testing for it, you don’t understand.

People can get the antibody test to see if they had the virus.
It could have been around in Feb. We went away to Mexico, and many people ar Newark airport were wearing masks, and even on the plane.

I was curious about this as well.
I feel like with so many unknowns about the virus (is it spread asymptotically, does it live on surfaces, etc.... the answers are constantly changing). I just have a hard time wrapping my head around taking a vaccine for a virus that we still are learning about and just taking it “for the good of society”. I want to want to wait on line for this for hours to do my part but I’m just not convinced yet.

Trust me sweetie, I understand just fine. I know MANY who were VERY sick prior to COVID being announced, many who have been sick with COVID since March, many who STILL suffer even after "getting better" and one friend who was on his deathbed and now 10 months later is STILL on oxygen.
So again, what was your point earlier in the thread???
You said nobody should worry if they haven't been sick yet which of course, makes NO sense. So please, enlighten us with your infinite wisdom of this virus and why we don't need to be concerned now.

Yes but if I am correct that doesn’t last very long so if it was a year ago, it won’t come up.
One of my dear friends was in bed for 3 weeks. A man who is nonstop and barely gets sick and if he does, it is not bad and really doesn’t stop him much. He went for one and was negative. It was many many months later though and was told it might not show up anymore.

Exactly. I am so confused about this virus and this vaccine. I'm really trying my best to figure it out, but the information seems to contradict itself. Everyone is pushing the vaccine and saying we need to establish herd immunity, but if the vaccine doesn't stop you from getting Covid (it may only make you asymptomatic), and doesn't stop you from passing it to others (no one knows), what good does it do? I keep going around in circles!!!

I would most likely be fine. I am doing it for the good of society. I am not getting this vaccine so I won't get COVID. I am getting this vaccine so many others who are high risk will not get COVID.
I'm very confused about this. I've been very vocal about my hesitation to take the vaccine, and one of the reasons is the "herd immunity" theory.
They are unsure if you can still pass covid onto someone if you have the vaccine. How do we then establish "herd immunity?" Am I misunderstanding something?

It’s the long term. It’s the effectiveness. It’s the length of time between dosages. It’s the unknown as to whether or not you can still be a carrier. It’s knowing if we will even have enough when it comes time for second doses. So many questions.
I don’t want to inject something that was quickly put together that might only work for a couple months and I’m still spreading this virus. I’m doing risk vs reward right now and I’m leaning towards waiting a couple more months.

That's not true. mRNA vaccines have been studied and used for decades and that is in fact how they were able to come up with a vaccine so quickly. I recommend the following website from the CDC:

As for herd immunity, it is true that we don't know for sure if the vaccine can prevent transmission (can those vaccinated still be silent carriers?). They need to monitor areas where vaccination is prevalent to see if infections also drop among the remaining unvaccinated people. Or they could ask people to swab themselves daily and track how often vaccinated people test positive and whether they pass the virus to other members of their household.
These things take time that we just do not have. Almost 300,000 dead. This thing is worldwide and real. We do know that the asymptomatic are less likely to spread the disease, so that makes me hopeful that this will provide herd immunity. We still need to follow all of our precautions (masks, distancing) for awhile until we know for sure.

Exactly. I am so confused about this virus and this vaccine. I'm really trying my best to figure it out, but the information seems to contradict itself. Everyone is pushing the vaccine and saying we need to establish herd immunity, but if the vaccine doesn't stop you from getting Covid (it may only make you asymptomatic), and doesn't stop you from passing it to others (no one knows), what good does it do? I keep going around in circles!!!

From what I have read and been told by doctors mRNA vaccines have never before been approved for any other disease. mRNA therapies have been used in human trials safely for over 5 years and studied for over 3 decades. You are correct though that there has never been a mRNA vaccine.
Also mRNA is just based on the protein synthesis that occurs in your cells day in and day out. mRNA degrades quickly once it has been translated into the spike proteins in the ribosomes. It is an inherently unstable molecule due to the nitrogenous base, uracil.

How can there be scientific studies on the long term implications of the disease?
And if the virus is so similar to the SARS virus, why don’t we know for sure how long natural immunity lasts or how effective a vaccine might be?
We either understand the virus or we don’t.

Everyone's definition of "long-term" varies, too. If people consider "long-term" to be a lifespan, we won't know if the virus or the vaccine causes "long-term" effects for 75 years or more. We will all have to draw a line in the sand as to what we think "long term" safety is.

I’m confused by this. If you researched this to death you would have seen concerns. Saying you saw no implications but researched this to death is a bit confusing to me.
All this said, op pls do not take your “education” from this thread. You can see in all the back and forth all the blatant misinformation on both sides. Talk to medical professionals and do your own research. Only you know your medical history and whether you feel comfortable to proceed with the covid vaccine.

Even though you get the vaccine, Dr. Fauci still said you need to wear masks, social distance and isolate from your family/friends. He doesnt know how long for. There’s still a chance you get sick or get people sick, they don’t know how long it protects you for. Based on this, I see no reason for me to get this vaccine right now. Maybe if it was 1 dose I would consider it. But to get two doses and then maybe have to get two more doses in the fall during the actual season. I rather wait on it.
And this is ignoring if there would actually be long term side effects of this vaccine, because no one can answer to this.
