spin off to mammo/sono post from Dolphinsbaby
So after reading the post from Dolphinbaby about her mammo experience it got me thinking.
I am 44 and have never had a mammo. I don't go to the doctor and haven't been to a GP in about 5 years or a gyno since my last child was born and he is 9 now so it's probably been about 8 years.
Anyone else like this? I don't know why I never go to the doctors. I haven't had a consistent GP bc the last one I had stopped taking my insurance and I guess I never looked for another one.
I know my sister said there is a place in the Smithaven mall that does mammos and you just need to give them your insurance card and don't need a script from a doctor. Has anyone used them?

I am terrified of doctors, so I am a bit like this. I literally have to be on a lot of Xanax and have someone go to the doctor with me. That being said, I had a mammo two years ago and went to the gyn 2 years ago. I do it about every two years because that is what is recommended. I need to do a blood panel as it has been about 3 years since I had that done. I didn’t plan that blood panel either. I was in the hospital for something else and they needed to take blood.
My vaccinations are up to date, though.
I have to admit I am nervous thinking about the CoVID vaccine and getting it. Needles are my biggest fear. I have Vasovagal response, so there is that.

I would really urge you to at the very least go for annual gyno visit.
You should have an annual pap done. It would be so tragic to die from a cancer that would be easily screened

I go to my primary every 12-18 months.
I go to my ObGyn once a year.
I go to the dermatologist once a year (although this year I haven't gone due to Covid).
I go to the dentist twice a year. I hate the dentist and am currently dealing with a lot of pain post getting a tooth filled 2 weeks ago (no pain before....). I have my second follow appointment tomorrow morning - UGH!!!!

I'm like you regarding the GP. After I got married, i went once or twice to the doctor my husband used, but I hated his bedside manner! Then, I just never found another one. But, I go to the gyn every year, as well as the dentist and eye doctor.

I have not had a regular doc visit for a physical exam in about 7-8 years and did just recently. I do go to the gyno once a year bc I'm on the pill.
I do anual mammo's, but did skip last year so was just there the other day.
With Covid and all and the kids busy with school I was able to get in my appointments.
I do recommend going to at least the woman's doc.
My insurance sucks so whatever it covers I go to.

Good God no! Preventative medicine is key. Please get your mammo, you are 9 years overdue and at the very least see your PCP and Gyno.

I'm terrible about going to the GP. I haven't been in forever. I go to the GYN and dermatologist every year. The dentist, once a year. Maybe.

9 years? I know my insurance only covered a mammo starting at 40 unless you had any family history. Do most people start getting them at 35?
I know I'm horrible at this. I guess since I have always been super healthy I don't think about it. I have only ever taken prescription antibiotics twice in my whole life!

I try and get a physical/bloodwork once a year- sometimes I forget
I go to dentist every three months. I’m on the “I don’t floss” plan
Eye dr is whenever I remember
Gyn twice a year

I go to my GP for a physical and blood work every November.
Dentist every 6 months- I do it in January and July so it's easy to remember.
Gyno- every March
I am 38 and have not gone for a mammo yet. My gyn said in two years when I am 40.

Prevention is key. I have so many loved ones still with me because of early screenings.
Spend this weekend Asking friends, family, neighborhood FB groups, etc who they see and why. Then see if they are on your Insurance plan. Monday morning start your calls.
Obgyn (can get pap and mammo script at once there)
And
Primary dr for an all around physical
Eye dr, dentist can wait a little longer if it’s all too much at once
But please Take care of yourself.

My doctor recommends a baseline at 35, but my insurance will not cover it before 40 unless you have a Family history.

Preventive care is completely covered under my insurance plan. Including no co-pay.
So I make sure to go every year.
I don't think anyone enjoys going to the doctor but we need to do it. It could be life saving.
Please call for appointments.

I have been to the one in the smithaven mall (Pure mammography) twice. I would definitely recommend them. The staff were great and it didn't even hurt
Also for what its worth, i liked how they had it set up very peaceful, with soothing music and tvs showing nature scenes to help distract you and help you relax. I dont believe you need a script, but you should probably call first to be sure. Also, i believe they used to be "walk-in" but now with covid, im pretty sure you need an appointment.

It’s funny bc I rarely go to my primary doc. Only if I am sick. Last time I was there was in Feb with flu which thinking back it might’ve been Covid bc I have never been sick like that in my life. Luckily if it was Covid, it was mild for Covid, but definitely the worst flu I have had in my life.
Anyhow, I have gone regularly to my ob/gyn. I am on the pill and now over 40 so he wants to see me twice per year (apparently that’s their protocol if you are on the pill and over 40). Please go and get checked out. A pap is so important and definitely get your mammogram!

I hate going to the doctors, but before turning 40 a cousin died of breast cancer and she was a couple of years older than me, so it made me think twice and now I go every year for my pap and mammogram referral - although I haven't gone this year. With my general dr, I only go because I have hypothyroidism and I'm low in B12, so I go there to get B12 shots and my prescription.

I was always told that I should get a Pap every 2-3 years (mine have always come out fine; this was in Australia and Germany— never had one done in the US as I have not lived there in almost 20 years).
Why is everyone here suggesting once a year?

I’m assuming it’s because that’s the suggestion for The US.
Every year pap and mammo.
If you think about it, a lot can happen in 2-3 years with the possibility of cancer.
When I had precancerous cells and needed a procedure done (over 20 years ago) I needed a pap and biopsies every 6 months for 2 years to be sure I was in the clear before returning To every year. If I hadn’t gone for 2-3 years, I couldn’t tell you what that would have meant for me and my life.
My mother Inlaw said now that she’s almost 70, her dr said she can go every other year or every 3 for her paps. But mammo is still once per year.

Actually ACOG changed their recommendations to every three years for a pap as well (provided your last one was negative) but many practices, including the one I go to, continue to do every year. I personally know two women who had normal paps, came back three years later as recommended, and both then had abnormal paps and high grade HPV. Anecdotal but enough to make me question the 3 year guideline.

Actually the mammo recommendations have changed. You can Google it I can’t totally remember off hand but I believe yearly mammos starting at 45 now. From what I had read they found many down sides to early and yearly screening.

All of my doctors have been adamant at starting at 35, and I have no family history. The insurance guidelines are because the insurance companies don't want to pay out all those years, nothing to do with health reasons. That's why good doctors will ignore that and write up whatever they have to, to start their patients at 35. Yes, you need to go! This doesn't mean mammos/sonnos catch everything as soon as it sarts but it's better than not going. It's fast, easy and painless.

Ummm the insurance guidelines have changed, not doctors recommendations. Wait till 45, see what happens. Thank GOD I have good doctors!
