Potential 20% cut to education funding?
Are any of your district's BOEs discussing plans on what they will be doing if the state follows through and reduces aid by 20% come the new year?
My home district has been trying to develop plans to save money and/or generate additional revenue as a 20% cut would result in a loss of over 5 million dollars. I know a few districts in my area have already gone to a virtual only model for secondary students and laid off all TAs and many custodians and secretaries to make up the gap. The long term ramifications of this are going to be terrible...

Potential 20% cut to education funding?
I admittedly do not know too much on this topic, but don’t school districts have a reserve fund for such circumstances? All other entities both private and public have taken a hit, so I suppose I’m not surprised at schools having an issue, too.
Unpopular opinion probably, but on LI, if districts consolidated and didn’t have countless superintendents, wouldn’t that help change things for the better as far as school finances, even in the best of times?

I'm all for consolidating districts, but this will never happen on LI. "Good districts" with very high taxes would never allow for this.

I’m not on LI. Districts upstate are different. My district is 15-20 square miles. The cut will most likely deplete most of their reserve with a 20% cut.

I believe part of the years state aid has already been paid, so the 20% would be for 1/3 of the school year (and not as detrimental as it sounds)
This is a tough year for everyone though. Our district was in good financial standing, but had to spend a lot on Covid and hiring extra teachers. Nothing was cut though. Not having clubs/sports saved money, and we received some very helpful grants.

Consolidated districts is the solution. I live in a town with 30k people so it is not happening in my town, but my neighboring towns each have less than 8,000 people and they are in the process of merging. I am in NJ. FWIW, my town school is one of the top in the state. A lot of the top school are not merging, but schools rated below 40 are being encouraged to merge with neighboring districts. I think they would rather choose who to merge with than be forced, but I can see it happening.

LI needs less school districts. They way they are currently configured is based on very old segregationist tactics and redlining. It breeds inequalities from the moment kids step foot into school. The have and have-not districts.

I hear you.
I live Upstate in the Capital District. Districts are geographically very large here. They take from a wide range of socioeconomic areas. Everyone lives in the same district and gets the same educational resources.
This cut in funding is actually having the most negative effect on city schools in my area. Schenectady, Albany, and Troy have all been 100% virtual at the secondary level since September due to the fact that they had to cut so much staff.

Our district has money in reserves to cover any cost in aid reduction for the year.
