Yes, my district just sent out this email .

“Effective the week of November 16, 2020, schools in yellow zones must test 20% of in-person students, faculty and staff over the two-week period immediately following the announcement of a yellow zone designation. If the results of the testing reveal that the positivity rate among the 20% of those tested is lower than the yellow zone’s current 7-day positivity rate, testing at that school will no longer be required to continue. A positivity rate in a school that is lower than in the yellow zone is a sufficient demonstration that in-person instruction is not a significant driver of local viral spread.”

Superintendent stated: “Please be advised, the district has reached out to the SCDHS to request further clarification on this new change. In particular, it is unclear if this means that 20% of each school population must be tested or if it is 20% of the district’s TOTAL population. Additionally, it is unclear if a person who is tested must remain in quarantine until the results are available.”

Test them where? In school? When they aren't sick? Without parental permission???

I would if it keeps schools open.

Are you saying you would be ok for a school to test your child WITHOUT your permission?

If the testing becomes available for them to test students periodically I think that it should be a requirement to attend school. I am not sure why anyone would hesitate to give permission if a trained, licensed medical professional was administering the test.

Yes, this as well

ETA: You do have to consent. So you are giving permission. They won't select a child who's parent hasn't consented

Also, they will NOT test a child who is upset. And it is the short nasal swab, not the "brain toucher" one.

I'm pretty sure DD's school is the same- it's akin to the regular flu swab.

My issue is I want to be there when ANYTHING of a medical nature is done to my child. When ANYONE lays a hand on her.
That is my issue.

If it meant the schools staying open and they had to do sweeping random tests (ie a note comes home and says you have to go for testing and bring the results in) id be fine with that. All in an effort to keep the numbers down and keep schools open. The way things are going right now we will be back in shut down mode, and all the same people will be complaining about how things should be wide open. If you want them open be a part of the solution. Wear your mask. Get tested if you need to. Keep gatherings small. Maintain distance.
These are not hard things to do.

And we do ALL of those things.
And if they want to test my daughter, fine, so be it.
But I will be there for it.
And since I'm not allowed to set foot in the school, I will take her to the practitioner of my choice.
School is not the place for medical things of any nature IMO.
I'm still her parent... COVID or not

Yes - i agree 100%. That is exactly what i said -- if they send a note home that you were randomly selected and need to go for independent testing by x date -- you get the test and bring in the results. This isnt a huge ask in my opinion for the risk the faculty takes each day.
I haven't heard anyone ever say the school would do the test, especially without knowledge. Where is that coming from??? The schools have been so above board about everything that is going on. Sending constant communications about positive cases, and the steps they are taking. I give them a hell of a lot of credit for stepping up to the plate and maintaining this new normal as well as they have. I would never assume they would just take my child and test them. That seems pretty far fetched.

Yellow Zone?

The best way to get this under control is widespread testing of the general population. Bigger sample size increases validity.

Believe it or not, we are currently not testing enough. Countries who have this under control are Doing random widespread testing.

Yes, especially considering they need your permission to take a picture of you child in class, or for them to attend a virtual field trip via zoom... i had to sign a permission slip last week saying she could participate in some Zoom field trip.
So yeah I can't imagine them doing anything without them telling us.
I just don't like the idea of her being tested in school at all- with permission or not. I want to be there.

I think that pediatricians and testing centers will become so overwhelmed if they do institute a policy of periodic testing to attend schools and they don't administer the tests in school. I think that they would have to give the option for you to come into the nurses office while the test is being administered. After having the test many, many times I would be completely fine with my children being tested without me being present but I can understand parents wanting to be there, at least for the first few times until they are comfortable with it.

Re: Yellow Zone?

I have absolutely no problem with regular testing and I would much prefer that to a mandatory vaccine.

However, my young children are PETRIFIED of the strep test and flu test. So there is no way in hell I would allow this test to be administered on my terrified children without me there. I will happily go up to the school whenever they are scheduled for a test.

They are not testing without parents permission and they are not testing in the school. This is how rumors get started. And the test is far from terrifying. Getting tested for strep is more terrifying! My friends school is doing this right now. Students have to opt in, permission from parents and then they go get tested wherever they choose. Teachers and Administrators, my friend is one, have no choice, but 20% of them a week will be tested, so approx they'll all be tested once a month with the size of her school.

Is it the nasal test? Bc isn’t the rapid test not accurate?

My kid screams when I remove Band-Aids, so I can’t see this going over well.

Exactly. If it’s an immediate medical emergency and she needs CPR or to brace a broken limb—fine. But I will take her to her doctor for any required testing.

It typically will not be your pediatrician administering the test anyway. It will most likely be a nurse on the staff. Pediatricians will become so overwhelmed. I'm wondering if anyone that thinks it's important to be there for the test has actually ever had the test or had their child tested. I am only wondering because the test takes less then ten seconds and is minimally invasive. I am not being snarky - before I had it I was literally losing sleep over it. But once I experienced it for myself and my child I realized how nothing of a thing it actually is.

Let's be real. People are not wearing masks all the time. My kids play sports, attend playdates, and see extended family all while not wearing a mask. Call me a horrible person but they wear the mask all day in school. They don't need to wear it at home when they have a friend over. I am thinking of putting an end to the in home playdates but I think I will be in the minority.

I know the test is not a big deal as DH was tested twice already and said it was nothing
However, my DD gets nervous with anything medical and I want to be there for her.
She is going for a flu shot today and is freaking out. I can't imagine saying- ok yeah go in there without me or your dad.
No way. There is no reason for it.
Anything medical, a parent should be present IMO

This exactly. People are not following the mandates. Looking around my neighborhood, you would honestly not even know there was a pandemic.

I make my son wear a mask whenever we are outside of the house and near other people. When we go to the park, we wear masks. If others are not wearing a mask and we can not distance, we leave. We bring masks on hikes, walks, bike rides and put them on if we are near others. We have only had outside playdates, where I make him and his friends wear masks. We actually didn't sign him up for any activities because I could not be sure that others would follow the mask mandates.

And now because of the heightened numbers, we are seeing no one outside of school or work.

We don't live near family so that is a non-issue, which is nice because I honestly do not like how lax some of my family members are being.

In public, I would say yes. Kids have been playing together for months and months and I wouldn’t want my kid having to wear it either after having it on all day.

I think it depends on who gives the test. Yes, it’s a quick test but not everyone experience it the same way. I’ve heard people say it’s nothing and I’ve heard peaople say it felt like they just poked their brain.

WHAAAAT? This is crazy. People are all over the place having playdates, going to the park, halloween parties (ahem the current spikes). They are NOT wearing masks when doing this stuff and now look!! If people acted in real life the way they have been at school the numbers wouldnt be up!

Nobody is testing your kids without permission and nobody is getting test in the school itself.

People ARE wearing masks so are they not working if they claim so many people are testing positive?

That would only be if everyone was wearing them all the time and wearing them correctly.
Your train of logic is flawed by saying if people are wearing masks THEN people wouldn't be testing positive as such great numbers. It's a logic statement with an assumption that is false.

100% agree. My school would not even do temperature checks for all. There is no way they would be testing any child.

They can't even give tylenol without doctors permission, so they are not going to be able to stick a q-tip up a kids nose or swap their mouth without permission.
