Yellow Zone?
I am hearing rumors that Suffolk County will soon (potentially Thursday) be in a yellow zone and schools will close unless 20% of staff/students test for covid. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

Doesn’t surprise me, numbers are going up pretty quickly hopefully it will level off and not get to that point but there has been a significant jump, last Saturday numbers looked promising and were down but only more time will tell growth.
Not sure about the school closures though

“Effective the week of November 16, 2020, schools in yellow zones must test 20% of in-person students, faculty and staff over the two-week period immediately following the announcement of a yellow zone designation. If the results of the testing reveal that the positivity rate among the 20% of those tested is lower than the yellow zone’s current 7-day positivity rate, testing at that school will no longer be required to continue. A positivity rate in a school that is lower than in the yellow zone is a sufficient demonstration that in-person instruction is not a significant driver of local viral spread.”
Superintendent stated: “Please be advised, the district has reached out to the SCDHS to request further clarification on this new change. In particular, it is unclear if this means that 20% of each school population must be tested or if it is 20% of the district’s TOTAL population. Additionally, it is unclear if a person who is tested must remain in quarantine until the results are available.”

Thank you for sharing this! I am trying to prepare for my kids to be possibly be home and my district has put out nothing.
Who would just randomly subject their child to testing? This looks to be the newest sh*t show.

Keep in mind that it might not be for the whole county.
Right now in Westchester, there is an orange zone, with a yellow zone border around it, but it is pretty much one city.

My cousin lives in the current orange zone in Westchester, and says this is not yet happening at her son’s school. He’s in 6th so not sure if that’s elementary or middle school if that matters..

Without permission, no.
But I would give permission to the school nurse to perform the test.
I also do not think most schools have the man power to perform this level of testing so it would need to be done outside of the school setting. My school doesn't even have enough people to do daily temperature checks so I doubt they have the capacity to test 20% of the student population for Covid.

They are not testing without parents permission and they are not testing in the school. This is how rumors get started. And the test is far from terrifying. Getting tested for strep is more terrifying! My friends school is doing this right now. Students have to opt in, permission from parents and then they go get tested wherever they choose. Teachers and Administrators, my friend is one, have no choice, but 20% of them a week will be tested, so approx they'll all be tested once a month with the size of her school.

That is not how you answered it so it sounds like you would be ok for them to do it without permission.
I have a problem with no permission and them making me take my child to get it done without any symptoms.
Just like I don't run to the doctor when I feel well, I don't intend to run now to test for this. That is why there are so many lines. People are feared by the media that they NEED to go and get tested. Heck, I hear one commercial all the time that says to go get tested and tested often. Why??? I don't want to hear people complaining when their medical premiums go up because all these "free" tests are put into them and out of their pockets.
As I have said over and over, I truly think a strain of coronavirus is in these tests and that is what they are seeing, especially for people who get tested and feel almost nothing or very light symptoms.

PCR amplifies a piece of genetic code that is SPECIFIC/UNIQUE to Covid-19.
PCR has been around since 1987. It was developed by Kary Millis. It is what enables processes like gel electrophoresis. It is not new. It is now easy to identify genetic sequences and amplify them. I literally do these techniques with my 9th grade students.

Have you ever been tested? The test is not terrifying at all. Has your child ever had a flu or strep test? It's no more terrifying than any of those. The only thing that would make them terrified is a parent getting worked up about it for them. My kids hate shots and anything doctor related and this test is nothing.

I don't know about Suffolk, but my DD's school in Queens is in a yellow zone and all in-person students and staff had to sign a waiver to allow random testing. All I can say is I'm glad I decided to keep DD remote!
ETA: They do give you advance notice if your child is chosen for the following week and they give you the option to bring your child to a location of your choosing for the test so you can be present. It just has to be done the same week that your child is chosen for.
ETAA: The testing is not done by a school nurse but a third party company and is no cost. Results are given electronically in 24-48 hours.

If the testing becomes available for them to test students periodically I think that it should be a requirement to attend school. I am not sure why anyone would hesitate to give permission if a trained, licensed medical professional was administering the test.

This has been a thing in the DOE since October (which feels like EONS ago) and parents have been trying to fight it.
I consented for my son to be tested for a host of reasons, the first and foremost that I want him and other kids in school. Also, they will NOT test a child who is upset. And it is the short nasal swab, not the "brain toucher" one.
My son's principal had them record himself being tested and posted it on the school's social media and website to show parents what it would be like.
