Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

Has anyone heard this?

I can understand maybe just the week after because of family gatherings. But I’m hearing till after the Christmas break! That is crazy.

Honestly, it’s not spreading IN schools.

It’s all the outside activities that cause the spread. I don’t understand why these schools quarantine an entire class for 14 days who wear masks and are 6 feet apart and in my kids school can’t even use a basketball that another kid touches or play on a playground ??

Meanwhile the positive child was at, let’s say, a soccer practice and soccer tournament with no mask. A play date. A restaurant. Those kids who were in contact and all go about their lives and spread it. While the kids who probably don’t have it are sitting home getting a virtual “education”.

Bottom line, these kids need school and schools aren’t super spreaders. They are wearing masked and being socially distanced. Parents need to be more responsible outside of school. Unpopular opinion, indoor sports need to take a break until this dies down and parents stop with the indoor large gatherings of kids.

Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

Our Superintendent has addressed this rumor many times, and has assured the parents it is completely false.

People love to spread nonsense on Facebook to start drama.

I agree with everything you said.

I’m a teacher and mom.

I don’t want schools to close. My HS students need to be IN school and my 1st grader needs to be IN school.

People need to stop getting together indoors with masks and distancing. Sometimes we need to do difficult things for the greater good. Providing an education/safe space for our children should be one of our number one concerns.

As a correction, any child who had been in close contact with an infected person should be quarantining. That includes people on your soccer team and people you have had play dates with. People are not honest with contact tracers and that’s why they may not be quarantining.

Totally agree. Although our district was going to move forward and do 4 days a week, but since the numbers are going up, they held off. We did get a survey asking if your child has access to WIFI or computers at home. So I think this is where the rumors started for our community.

Problem is the contact tracers are overwhelmed. And when coaches or leagues send out an email about an occurrence they can’t give names so parents don’t know if their child was with that child. So they just take it with a grain of salt and go on with their lives and send their possibly infected child all over.

All while my healthy child is stuck home because a child they were 6 feet apart from while wearing a mask tested positive and happens to be in the same classroom that is constantly cleaned and disinfected and has a new filtration system. And now I can’t go to work because my parents don’t want to watch my child because they are “quarantining”. And now I am getting memos from the school to prepare to go virtual at any time. Can you tell I’m a little bitter right now haha

Our district says it is considering virtual for just the week after Thanksgiving. Also, we do not quarantine classes that are 6ft apart. Seems some districts are being more cautious than others but I don't think that's a requirement unless they are under 6ft.

Same! It's annoying actually. People post false information and everyone runs with it
Our super sends out multiple communications saying please stop It's not true.
Yet they continue

Our superintendent said our district has no plans to go on a holiday pause. That being said - my 5th grader is home for two weeks (not quarantined) because so many teachers at his school are in quarantine from 2 student and 1 staff cases.

A district in our county has reached out to families to notify them they are thinking of a holiday pause - from 11/25-1/19. They plan to announce on Monday.

Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

The district where I work decided to go full virtual learning for the week after Thanksgiving. I think other districts will begin announcing the same shortly.

Same here. I think a “holiday pause” is coming for a lot of districts but they’re just trying to keep it hush for now.

Re: Schools virtual after thanksgiving?

My sons school is doing remote the week after Thanksgiving and Christmas. So after he is off for more then two weeks during Christmas while im working, he’s remote for a week. Super! So glad I’m paying for this crap.

It could be worse but honestly I’m annoyed because it setting a clear precedence. Just mess up peoples schedules with no physical data and science to prove why my sons school should close. I guess they have a crystal ball I’m not aware of. It makes me think why the fuq are we wearing masks, being cautious and dealing with the hybrid model if they are just gonna do whatever they want anyway. For a virus that will be here for a long time.

They shouldn't be keeping anything hush. Working parents need to plan for an inconvenience such as this.
If they are hiding it that is very wrong and truly inconsiderate to parents who havr to work outside the home.
What would be the reason to hide it?

They’re not hiding it. It just hasn’t been finalized yet. The decision will be based on the numbers and Cuomo. But my principal believes it’s a strong possibility. I feel like a decision will come out this coming week.

That is ridiculous. It’s two weeks away, let parents know. At least my son's school warned us about the week after Thanksgiving earlier in the week and then confirmed it for both holidays yesterday evening.

One of my surrounding districts is going virtual for just the week after thanksgiving. I think it makes no sense what so ever. I would assume that some of the older kids will end up getting together with their friends outside of school like many kids do now so what is the sense? It is gonna make chaos for working parents that now have to scramble for the younger kids who can’t be left home alone . My district has no plans on doing this. The superintendent already sent out a memo yesterday.

As staff, we just found out about the remote week on Wed morning.

That’s crazy. I get that they are making last minute changes but they need to finalize and communicate them faster. For both staff and parents. I mean staff can be parents too that have to make arrangements.

Just a note regarding superintendents assuring the community there will be no pause...

I work in a district in western Suffolk. On March 12th the superintendent told us in no uncertain terms that our district would not be closing down at any time. On March 13th we closed for 2 weeks, which turned into the rest of the school year.

Given that, I put very little faith in what administration says.

As far as our administration—the rumors spreading were basically that the “Superintendents Association” (or whatever it’s called) had met and made this blanket agreement for all LI districts. That is false.
What each individual district does is up to them at this point. Unless they are given a directive from the Governor.

Well, obviously districts are on their own for now. Just explaining why I don’t necessarily believe everything I hear.

That’s insane. What are working parents supposed to do? They can’t work and teach their kids simultaneously. Something has to give either schools need to stay open or there needs to be unlimited paid family leave at 100% salary so parents can teach their kids

And considering it's not spreading in schools due to all the distancing precautions this is absolutely absurd.
I'd be furious

From DD's principal:

"It is a parent's responsibility to ensure they are available to supervise their child's remote learning activities. All parents make sacrifices for their children."

I don't even have to tell you my reaction to that.
