I don't get how people listen to him. If he told them to go jump off the Brooklyn Bridge, would they? 
I think some of the precautions are legit and some are over the top. However, you can't just dismiss every measure that is put in place to protect us. We do need to do something so that schools don't shut down and businesses can remain open.
I think asking people to skip Thanksgiving after the year we had is a lot. Don't have 100 people crammed in your dining room but having 20 family members is not a big deal to me.

Whether enforcement is practical or even possible is beyond the point. Even though many are in denial, we are in the middle of one of the greatest public crises of our lifetimes.
This is not about Cuomo. Policy makers and scientists around the world are regulating things that were never regulated before precisely so that all of the things we complain about---hospitals at capacity when we need them, closed schools, and impairments to businesses, among other things, may be lessened or eliminated.
Whether we like it or not, it's been determined that these mid-size private gatherings among households are major drivers of spread. How emotionally close the gatherers are is irrelevant. How many tantrums we all want to throw is irrelevant. This virus is going to rage until science and basic decency combine to give us better treatments, containment, and prevention.
For as long as everyone thumbs their noses at rules and guidelines and counts on the government's inability to enforce them, it is just more lives lost, more disease, and more school and business closings. We reap what we sow.
Decency is in short supply. Waiting for science to come through.

Start reading some articles about packed hospitals. Just read one that the headline said hospital at full capacity amid Covid surge. You open it, which many people don’t, says only 20% have Covid and the 80% are there for other reasons. So the hospital is not full of Covid patients. Not the first one I have seen with these headlines that make you believe something else.

I miss regular travel. We went to Hershey this past weekend and it was wonderful to get away for a couple of days.

We went to Hershey the weekend before Halloween. It was insane there. I couldn't believe how many people that let in there. I was shocked. It was worse than Disney! I've been traveling across the Northeast since June. Getting sick of the Northeast though!

Another problem with these weddings and parties is the amount of cross contamination going on with shared surfaces, shaking hands, etc. I guarantee there is no hand washing going on. Just like at these teen Halloween parties I've been hearing about.

You are correct - I was tired last night, VT is contiguous.
Wow - it was empty this past weekend and it was so warm out. But we went on Sunday and stayed over to Monday.

I just want to say that I LOVE all your posts.
We are celebrating Thanksgiving as a family of 3 this year. Does it suck? Yes, but I honestly don't want to get sick (call me selfish) and I don't want to possibly infect my parents and ILS who are both considered at-risk populations. I also don't want my DS to have to do remote learning. Now that the cold weather is here to stay, we will be going to school/work and the grocery stores - that's it.
My DS is super into Pokemon Go currrently so we will bundle up and hit up the local spots to get him Charmander, Pikachu, etc.

If you think Hershey was bad then, you should have gone opening weekend in July. The wave pool was beyond packed and no masks required in the water park!
I bet it was because people were NOT travelling to Disney as they normally would due to travel restrictions so they settled on Hershey instead No flying, etc.
I noticed Cape May was insane in August- more so than a normal August when we go. Probably for the same reason. No cruises, no Europe and Caribbean, people were staying local to vacation and avoid flying.

A lot of the spread we’re seeing is coming from the gatherings with family and/or friends. People may be asymptomatic, pre-symptomatic or attend anyway with mild symptoms thinking it’s just allergies or a cold. I understand not wanting to give up the holidays. I think the most responsible thing if people are getting together over the holidays would be to quarantine for at least 10 days prior.

This is a great way to look at it. We’ve had to cancel a holiday in the past due to illness (pink eye gross) so whole of course this isn’t ideal, I think people need to keep perspective.
I’m focusing on modifying existing traditions and making some new fun for just my immediate family. The long term benefit is worth it.
I’m terrified of how high these numbers can go and I feel better knowing I’m doing everything in my power to not contribute to any spread.

Sorry but Cuomo can never dictate what happens in my own home. We will be with family these holidays. I have seen multiple friends lose family and friends through this time and they never got a chance to say goodbye because of all the restrictions. Am i gonna have a house party...no, but i will not let holidays be dictated as though we are living under a kings rule.

Exactly. My mom will be 80 in a couple weeks. She suffers from anxiety and depression, there was no way in Gods green earth she was going stay away from us or her grandchildren. I have a friend who just lost her father and they barely saw him since March and she is now depressed because of it. And i agree, everyone is like next year we can do everything...sure sure...good luck with that thought.

Yes that combined with everyone just coming out of lockdowns. It was a complete and utter sh*t show. If I didn't get COVID in that wave pool I never will.

Sorry but Cuomo can never dictate what happens in my own home. We will be with family these holidays. I have seen multiple friends lose family and friends through this time and they never got a chance to say goodbye because of all the restrictions. I agree. There are many things that can kill your elderly (and not so elderly) family members this year- other than Covid Though many don't' remember any other causes of death due to the way this has taken over our lives.
So what if this was the last year you had to be together with your mom or grandma. What if God forbid they die of a heart attack, stroke, cancer etc in the next year?
And everyone was hiding and not seeing each other, not making memories not enjoying the holidays- for almost a year now.
I know several people who have died this year of unrelated causes. And I get so sad thinking of how they spent their last months- locked at home- no gatherings, ,no travel etc.
And for everyone who says- it's just this year, we'll do it next year!
What makes you think next year will be any better?
Back in March we never dreamed we would be still dealing with this in Nov and Dec.
So I have a feeling we will still be dealing with this for many many months, if not years to come.
Take your precautions, but don't let an arbitrary number of 10 dictate how you spend your holidays.
What makes 9 people in your house any safer than 10? Arbitrary.
The thing is, when the hospitals are taxed, people are much more likely to die of heart attacks or strokes, or other "treatable" emergencies. There is only a finite amount of care that hospitals can give. We also had medical professionals from around the country willing to come help when things were at their worst. I doubt we'll have that now if things get worse, as things are now bad all over the country.
I don't think it's truly about the governor saying there's a hard limit on people in your house. Obviously he's not going to send out patrols to keep things in check. To me, it's more of a guideline to make people think twice about group gatherings.
And you're right, things might not be better next year. But hope is basically all I can cling to right now.
