It's not. Good hand hygiene is always a good thing. In fact, I find it odd that it took this pandemic for people to realize that. Perhaps that is why City MD was always packed every time I passed it for years.
But worrying about picking up a candy bar while trick or treating and touching anything is a bit over the top.
Especially if you do have good hand hygiene and habits like you describe

Halloween - how are you going to display your candy?
From a scientific perspective, no, reaching into a bowl of candy isn't really any different than touching an atm or credit card pad at the store.
Surface transmission is very unlikely. However, if a positive child sneezed into their hand, stuck their hand in a bowl and then another child reached in and proceeded to wipe their mouth/nose- that could be problematic. There are very few instances a scenario like that is possible- but ToT is one of them.
We're taking DD ToT, but she can't have any of the collected candy until her hands are scrubbed and I open it for her. I'll bring a few pieces from home in case she wants some while we're out.

I am putting candy in baggies. The way i look at it - going trick or treating is the same as going to the supermarket. Who know who touched what before you took it off the shelf - just sanitize your hands before you eat :)

At my grocery store, regular soap was hard to come by for a long time. Luckily, I had just bought one of those jumbo sized ones right before everything got crazy.
I will be honest and say I only regularly washed my hands after I used the bathroom and before I ate pre-covid. I now wash them immediately when I get home and I have my DH and DS do the same. My son typically does it without prompting.
I am not even a little concerned that my immune system is suddenly going to forget how to make antibodies to protect me.

Pure stupidity of people listening to others that they needed to get it because they wouldn't ever be able to leave their homes.
Just like this with Halloween. Kids have been back at school for 2 or more months now and have been fine. We are worrying about going contaminated from a piece of candy that someone else touched but they have touched a million surfaces since March.

I would have to touch the candy to put it into any sort of bowl or bag...and I wash my hands like a person should do...so I am not seeing the issue...

Nope you are not missing anything. All fear mongering and people are falling into this. Just like they are trying to tell us that we can only have 6 people for thanksgiving. Sad that people are going to listen to this and might miss out on seeing family for maybe the last time in their life. The rate is 1.6% today in Suffolk. It was 1.9% the other day.

I was actually just having this discussion the other day with my DH and sister. That I still don’t get the whole TP thing in March. The actual reasoning. Lol.
So the other day my DH came home from walking my DD to the bus stop and said to me- oh the people at the bus stop are saying how it's starting to get hard to get paper towels and stuff again.
I told him to stop right there and not feed into it. Because I really feel like it's someone who happens to be in Costco when they are low on something and they run around telling others- OMG THE SKY IS FALLING! I CAN'T FIND TOILET PAPER! And then with social media it spreads all around and now people will start buying it up whenever they see it even if they don't need it, because someone said there is a shortage again. Even if it's not a shortage- just a day where the shelves weren't stocked yet. It's like a vicious cycle. People need to stop telling each other this shiit!

I always sort of figured that it works like this:
1. Idiots panic and greedy people resell and together they buy a shit ton of the stuff.
2. Normal people, who really don't want to horde but like to be able to wipe their ass, see what is happening and buy a little more than usual.
3. Genuine supply chain issues occur because there are restrictions on moving goods.
All of those combine to cause shortages for months.
But I have no data to back that up lol.

I understand about the touching of candy- what you say makes sense.
As for answering the door, when I open the door, I have 3 kids two feet in front of me yelling "Trick or Treat" I envision the viral load going right in my face  Of course I will be wearing a mask, but that is why I plan to use a table- to put some distance between me and the kids.

I bought pretzel bags and I'll be putting them directly in the kids trick or treat containers. No children digging around that way. I will encourage my kids to just grab a candy and move on. If there's a particular thing they want I'll just buy it for them later.

Like usual. I got this super cute pumpkin metal container a while ago so the candy will do there as usual. We’ll hand out the candy while we’re home, and then leave it outside when we’re out trick or treating.

I just wanted to comment on so many saying it’s no different than touching items in a grocery store or the ATM. It is different. 1. We are adults. And when we touch those things, we aren’t rubbing our eyes, nose and mouth constantly and talking in others faces at those times and 2. Grocery store, ATM and things like that are necessary risks we take daily. trick or treating is not a necessary risk.
So i don’t think the comparison is the same.

So i don’t think the comparison is the same.
Why the assumption that all kids do those things? I honestly think kids are taking this mask thing so much better than adults. The amount of adults who have masks under their nose and some under their chin lately is crazy.

It’s not about the immune system forgetting how to make antibodies to protect itself, it’s something that will always happen just like breathing or digesting food, our bodies don’t forget to breath when we’re asleep or digest food when we eat. The problem is that our bodies constantly are exposed to thousands and thousands of different types of viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc and the immune system needs to be able to recognize each different kind and act accordingly to what it’s dealing with. This is something that happens every day, and it’s constantly adapting and learning how to fight them even when we don’t manifest symptoms. So depriving the body to be naturally exposed to those microorganisms can delay the immune system on how to act whenever it is indeed facing those microorganisms.

I don’t think it is right to take another thing away from these kids. Kids are not getting sick nor bringing it home so they are fine to go out and get done candy for a few hours one day a year.
