Anyone still have an aol email address?

I have had mine for over 20 years. I actually have 3 (my normal one, a professional one-that has my actual name and I used to use for resumes and is now only connected to my linkedin, and a 3rd one which I use when I want to sign up for something free that I know I will gets tons of spam. LOL).

I know it's outdated. Everyone always laughs that I use aol, but all my friends know it, school, etc. I am set it in my ways.Chat Icon

However, for the first time yesterday, I emailed some parents in my son's class and users with gmail bounced the email back as potential spam so it was never deliveredChat Icon. It was nothing urgent.

But what does this mean? Do I have to get rid of aol? I know I can set up a gmail, but ugh. It's another email account to manage thenChat Icon and not to mention I would have to change some of my stuff (with the school etc.) so I am nervous about missing communication.

Any other AOL users feel my pain???

Forward everything going to your AOL account to a Gmail account.

https://www.techjunkie.com/forward-aol-email-gmail/

I have literally hundreds of email addresses, since I own my own domain name. I also have several different gmail accounts for other things. My PC email tool (thunderbird) is able to pull in emails from every account and display them on one screen.

I still use an aol address. And it’s a very silly one that I created when I was 15. I’m 40 now. My dh laughs at me every time I have to give it out at a store. I also have a more professional gmail one. I haven’t encountered any issues with emails bouncing back.

I thought AOL was no longer in use??? I might technically have an aol email, but I haven't tried to log in in at least a decade. From what I read years ago AOL was going to be obsolete , so you may want to set up another address. But Goldenrod or somebody else techie would know better!

Edited for just a side note...at my old job, ( a major university) we wouldn't interview anyone with an aol address, the assumption being the person was old and had no tech skills....not saying it's right or true, but just something to keep in mind if anyone is job hunting.

According to Wikipedia:

On March 16, 2017, Verizon, which had acquired AOL in 2015, announced that it would discontinue its in-house email services for internet subscribers, and migrate all customers to AOL Mail.

It sounds like Verizon is going to be keeping AOL Mail around for a long time....

I have seen hiring managers turn away resumes containing aol email addresses. Please don't use an aol email address, and certainly do not use anything other than your name as the actual address for business purposes.

I have two AOL accounts still. I opened a gmail account but I'm still using the aol. So many people and places have my aol account. Hard to let go of it because of that.

My outplacement company when I was looking for jobs said that aol.com email addresses make you look old and dated. And definitely use your name.

Wow that seems crazy to me that someone wouldn't interview if you have an aol address. I can see if name was something unprofessional.

I use my aol email still. I haven't had any issues with people not receiving my messages.

Re: Anyone still have an aol email address?

My husband does and I keep telling him he’s got to let go lol
I made him a more professional one and he refuses to use it. There’s one company he does business with that their emails won’t go through to an AOL account so he has them send me his invoices.

I technically still have an AOL email, I use it for coupons and sign ups not to clog up my regular gmail.

It's an outdated platform- companies want to see that you can adapt to changes in technology.

I've never come across an applicant with an aol email address, but tbh I probably wouldn't interview them, either. I'd also venture to guess that the resume of someone who hadn't learned along the way (over the past decade) that they should update their email address probably doesn't have the most stellar resume.

Re: Anyone still have an aol email address?

I honestly don't' even look at an applicants email platform. I'm too busy reading the resume.
I would much rather have someone who fit my team well and was a hard worker with an AOL email address then someone who knows how to use Tik Tok.
And I work for a technology company so we are pretty big on the latest and greatest technology trends. But an email address is so insignificant.

Honestly- how does signing up for a free gmail account make you so tech savvy?? It's not like you're coding anything.

I agree, who cares where ones emails go. My dad has yahoo or gmail he is more up to date then me but I'm younger. I just refuse to use gmail. :)

BUT when I worked for the career development office, when one of our students had an aol account it was frowned upon just like many on her posted. It look as if the person is not changing with the times.... it was always suggested to the student to change email addresses

I never have an issues sending or receiving emails from aol. It behaves better then Cable most of the time

Which is funny, and means that the interviewers know very little about technology. AOL Mail is literally a week older than Gmail. They were both released to the public in 2004. AOL on March 21, and Gmail on April 1.
So, if you got a Gmail account in 2004, you're "up to date and tech-savvy", but if you got an AOL account in 2020, you're not? AOL Mail is still recommended by tech reviewers as a good, free, simple email system, and has over 2 million active users.

But, most people I meet don't know a lot about technology. People are still amazed and confused that I have my own domain, and I have valid addresses like "yourcompanyname@<domain.com>" or "ThisIsAVeryTechSavvyEmail@<domain.com>" Chat Icon

Chat Icon I love auto-forwarding. It simplifies a lot of things. Since I have my own domain, I can auto-forward all sorts of email addresses to any other email address.
