Not giving out candy this year
I'm still decorating for Halloween, I'm just not answering the door. They'll know when nobody answers the door I guess.

I'd put a sign up. I won't be answering my door but I plan to leave trick or treat bags out for kids to take. I figure if I pre-bag them, kids are more likely to take one and not dig around and share germs.
Once the bags are gone, I'll put a sign up saying we're out.

We put out a bowl bc we go out trick or treating. I make a sign that says "please take one" or something cute in Halloween theme. Do i think they take more than 1? Of course, but it's a sign that says don't ring the doorbell and take from the bowl.
We've always gone to all homes decorated or not. If you take too long to answer the door we are onto the next house.
This is exactly what we have always done. This year will be the first year ever that we won't be answering the door, for the same reasons as the OP.
It's really sad, and even though we will be creating our own memorable festivities, I hope that by next year, we will be back at it!

I just came back to add, that judging by the responses, most don't pay attention to decor when deciding to knock or not. Since that's the case, if decking out your house for Halloween brings you joy, do it! We all need more joy so don't deprive yourself.

Thanks for all of your responses. I’ve decided to put out a bowl with baggies filled with candy (so theres No digging around) if some a-hope teenager comes and steals it all, I’ll have a second sign ready stating it was stolen (because it will)

My issue with leaving a note is 1. I don’t want to leave one saying we aren’t home, It’s like an invite to Rob the house (i really won’t be home during a bulk of the day) And 2. To leave one saying we aren’t participating in Halloween, makes me wonder if the asshole teens in my area will take that as a “let’s egg the house” lol
Yes. These are the things I think of.
ETA: I would leave candy out with little social distance X’s for families to not be on top of each other but those same asshole teens come and rob the candy - bowl and all.
We don't go by decor but if you keep lights out and door closed that's usually an indicator to us to move on to the next house.
I also wouldn't leave a note, I think thats opening yourself up to teenage kids being a holes.

I like the idea of not only leaving candy out, but having it be individually wrapped to avoid their having to dig around.

I’ll be leaving out little individual bags for kids to take.
We’ll be ToT as usual, just with masks.
