Is it weird that I found this weird?
Was waiting on the sidewalk for my To Go order from a restaurant the other night.
Various people eating at tables on the sidewalk and some people eating inside the restaurant.
2 guys came out of the restaurant, one had a mask the other did not have a mask.
The guy without the mask walks up to me and holds out his phone and says "Can you take a picture of us"
I thought that was a strange request in this day and age so I said "What?"
He repeated his request again, but at that moment my order came so I said - "Sorry, I can't - my food is here"
The guy gives me a look like I'm a freak.
But I grab my food and take off.
My wife says he obviously isn't too concerned about the whole covid thing since he wasn't even wearing a mask so he probably didn't care if I touched his phone.
Do you think this was a strange request from the guy?
Pre-Covid I think its normal - but during covid times I'm surprised he had no issues with a stranger touching his phone.
Just wondering what others thought

I sanitize my phone daily and also sanitize my hands prior to eating or touching my face so it wouldn't bother me to have someone touch my phone for a pic.
We were on a hike back in like April I want to say and I was having DH take a pic of me and DD and a family stopped and asked if we wanted a pic with all 3 of us. I thought that was nice of them and they probably just sanitized their hands after touching my phone and I wiped my phone with a Clorox wipe after so all good

Yup- I saw someone pass their phone to a stranger in grand central to take their pic and I thought it was weird. I mean I guess they can sanitize it, but still. It's odd.

This has been the subject of discussion with friends as well. I sanitize the phone so I wouldn't think of it and I definitely didn't think people would be weirded out by the request either but obviously a phone is a huge source of germs so why wouldn't someone be weirded out ? Gotta love the new normal

Yes, everything you touch is a source of germs..that's why hand sanitizer is my best friend. Then soap when I get home.
I used to get pink eye like mad. Really made me think about how I was getting it. Touching something filthy then touching my eyes. I started really being conscious of hand hygiene after that

Totally agree. I have never even liked when anyone would touch my phone. Not even my husband.

Gross, but I've always sanitized my hands after touching someone's phone in the past. I was doing a photoshoot for a teen the other day, and a couple stopped me and asked if I could take their pic with their phone. Um no. I'm being paid to take photos, have a huge camera in my hand, and I'm not touching your phone today. People are weird. I never ask people to take my pic. I put my phone or camera on the timer.

I’ve been asked to take a pic and I’ve asked others to take a pic for me. Yes, after covid. No, I don’t think it’s weird at all.

This! I wouldn't think twice before, but now with the spread of Covid I would. Everyone is taking it differently and you don't know if someone is totally social distancing or if they're the ones that don't care or even somewhere in the middle.

This happened to me the other day at a local pumpkin patch. A mom came up to me and asked me to take a pic of her and her young daughter (matching shirts and all). I did it without really thinking at first, then I sanitized my hands immediately after. I did think it was strange given the times right now and I personally wouldn’t want someone using my phone..

No I don’t think it’s weird, a person can just say no i don’t feel comfortable. I think judging someone for an innocent request is weird. Maybe if people were more tolerable and understood that people are indeed different, this world wouldn’t be so fuq’d.

Also... a virus is not absorbing through your skin. You touch a ton of surfaces every day that are probably just as filthy as a phone. Carry hand sanitizer. Wash your hands.
Basic hygiene.
You don't have to take a picture of anyone or touch anything you don't want to. You never have to do anything you don't want to. But someone asking isn't weird.

I don't think it was crazy or weird that he asked you to take a pic.
I also don't think it was crazy or weird that you weren't comfortable doing it.
Everyone is at a different comfort level. It is what it is.
ETA I know you said he gave you a look like you were a freak, but it's very likely that is not what he was thinking at all. In general, I don't think people give that much thought to what other people do. I know I don't. Besides, there are a lot of reasons why someone would say no to taking a pic, even before covid.

Wait. In the middle of a national pandemic, as many schools in NY are shutting down again and the CDC is saying that the virus is airborne and that the 6 feet thing needs to be revisited....
a stranger WITHOUT a mask came up to you in public close enough to hand you something and tried to hand you something?
It's beyond weird. It is downright aggressive.
Maybe if he were wearing a mask and asked you from far away, I'd feel differently.
You handled it very well.

OP-I would have told the guy no. I think asking a stranger to touch things post-covid is weird, I agree.

Worth mentioning that walking out of a restaurant and right up to someone without a mask by itself is agressive.
So is giving the op a look when he declined.
Speaking to strangers? No problem.

I said it was weird. There is a difference between weird and aggressive in my opinion. I do not think that someone walking up to me and speaking is aggressive, unless they are screaming, yelling, making motions with their body that they are going to hurt me. Words can be aggressive sure, but this does not sound like he was yelling at her.

So, I believe it is aggressive, not because he spoke to him in a yell, but because he came right up next to him and attempted to hand him something without a mask. My whole opinion turns on the guy leaving a restaurant maskless and getting close to the op without a mask.
To me, emerging from a restaurant without a mask on means he put those inside at risk, and going right up to the op close enough to hand him a phone without a mask means, to me, that he put the op in a bad position--aggressively.
If we disagree, we disagree, but I want to be clear that my opinion is based on the combination of his being without a mask, so close, and trying to hand him something. No issue with his tone or volume of voice.

I don't see the big deal. Aren't we sanitizing our hands anyway? So take the pic then use some hand sanitizer. This whole thing is making us socially awkward.
