Is it me or is this just insanely rude?

So I had a work lunch meeting today and we were in a restaurant that was pretty empty. The dining room we were in had us at our table, then a little bit away from us a table of 3 business men, and then a table across from them in the corner, one guy alone.
The room was small enough though so that even though we were spaced out, we could hear each other if someone was speaking loudly.

At not one, but BOTH of these table, people were taking phone calls ON SPEAKER. The table with the 3 guys had some call going on a very loud, tinny speaker phone- it was so loud that we were having a hard time concentrating on our own conversation.
We kept glancing over, etc. They didn't get the hint.

Then not 20 minutes later, the lone guy at the other table starts up on his phone- on speaker- having a huge discussion with his cable provider about his router and how it's not working. Again, loud and obnoxious.

This was a relatively nice, somewhat expensive restaurant.

At one point, my boss couldn't take it anymore and made a comment to the guy on with his cable company and said- "HEY, we're in a RESTAURANT!" and the guy got annoyed but took the call off speaker and put it to his ear.

Is it me? Or is it extremely rude to take a call at a table in a restaurant ON SPEAKER?

Because not one, but two different tables did this in the few hours we were there- and we honestly couldn't believe it.

Its not you. People have no consideration. Who on earth would put a call on speaker in a restaurant?

There’s no scenario where I would ever take a call in public on speakerphone, but especially not inside at a restaurant.

People had little consideration for each other before this pandemic. Being apart for a few months has only degraded people’s ability for common curtesy and respectfulness.

Speakerphone only acceptable when you are in a room by yourself or in a room with only people who are part of the call.

I always hated when people walked down the street on speaker, elevators, etc but yes a restaurant is even worse.

That's crazy. I can see if the three guys were trying to have a lunch meeting with someone but at least keep the volume low. The guy alone, that's just weird and very rude. I don't know why you'd want to have a conversation on speaker phone just for the hell of it, especially in a restaurant.

Very rude. I find this more and more. Grocery store, hair salon, you name it. What is wrong with people?

Super rude. I use speaker in the privacy of my house, but not where everyone else in public can hear me.

Very rude. I have experience this too. It’s amazing how inconsiderate people can be. Recently this happened to me dining with my parents and I had to hear all the woman's problems

Right? The thing is that in a restaurant with only 3 tables seated in this dining area, 2 of the 3 were doing it. Which blew my mind even more.

When the second guy got on the speaker phone call we were all just like - is this real?

And you are all right- I've been noticing this for a long while now that people believe they are the only person on the planet. Whether it be in a supermarket where they block an entire aisle to casually read the label on something, driving like a maniac, cutting people off, leaving their shopping cart in the middle of the parking lot so it hits your car, stopping their car in the middle of a street to talk to someone on the sidewalk while you are behind them and stuck, speaker phone on the train or in this case a restaurant.... it's a society of ALL ABOUT ME!!!
Nobody else matters or exists. Common courtesy and respect for our fellow humans is out the window.

Really sad.

I think I posted on here back in the day when offices were a thing about a girl who would talk on speaker while using the public bathroom at work.
That was a real doozey.

That is crazy and so rude. I won't even talk on my car speaker phone while I'm at a drive through window. I don't want everyone in the world hearing my convos.

Just thinking maybe the second guy did it just to be obnoxious to the 1st table? My sister does obnoxious things like that intentionally to show people how rude they are lol

I definitely would not have a speaker phone call in a restaurant..........but, I am wondering, is there really a difference if he were sitting across from somebody having a conversation versus the speaker phone. We certainly wouldnt think it rude to have a conversation with those at our table -- I guess the question sort of is the volume of the speaker phone and the volume of him talking (if they were louder than normal talking voice as is usually the case).....or is it just that we expect that somebody sitting alone is going to be quiet, maybe read a book, and its jarring because we dont expect him to be talking?
