In-person or virtual students?

Are your DC doing in-person, virtual, or mixed?

DD is 100% in-person, and DS is 100% virtual. They each decided what they wanted to do, so we let them opt for what they were most comfortable with.

Re: In-person or virtual students?

My kids are in 4th & Kindergarten and our school district has full time, in-person for the Elementary Level. They did offer a full remote option but that was not an option for our family. If at some point we have to go remote, then so be it.

My son's school district (in NC) is 100% virtual until Jan 18. They'll reassess later what will happen the rest of the school year. Even if they offer another option, I'll still go with 100% virtual.

Re: In-person or virtual students?

DD is 100% in person 5 days a week, thank the good Lord in heaven above, sweet baby Jesus.
She's in elementary.

Middle and High School are hybrid of some kind- not sure exactly what- my brain stops being able to comprehend when they start in with A/B, AA/BB, synchronous vs non -synchronous and all that stuff.
All I hear when they start in with that is "a subpar education"

My kids are in 5th (middle) and 3rd (elementary) and are both hybrid. Our only other option for those grades was full remote.

They go to school on Mondays and Tuesdays, are asynchronous learning Weds, and then are synchronous with the other cohort of kids in school on Thursday and Friday.

We are in the city and middle school so we are full remote allegedly until October 1.

I didn't choose Hybrid with 50/50 because its not even close. It ends up being 5 days out of every 15 that he is in school.

my boys are both elementary (1st and 4th grades) we're in NJ and their district is doing a hybrid. so they go 2 full days a week in person, and 3 days virtual. My 4th grader is basically on live Google Meets for 6 hours a day on the days hes home,.Hes supposed to be following along with the teachers and with the 1/2 of the class thats at school on those days. even specials classes are live-streamed. its good because hes getting educated from an actual teacher, ad not just me guessing at how they want things explained.... BUT, i hate that hes basically glued to a chomrbook for 6 hours a day. even the days hes in-person, so much of it is done on the chromebook, too because its the best/ easiest way for the teachers to keep the 2 "cohorts" of kids on the same page.
My 1st grader has a mix- about an hour worth of live meets per day on his virtual days, and the rest are pre-posted activities that he does on his own time. BUT because hes so young still, i can't leave his side on his virtual days UGH!!! he needs complete hand-holding with where to find things, what to click on, how to log in to the meets- its EXHAUSTING and a full-time job!!!! Being a SAHM is a blessing and a curse right now. nice that i don't have to worry about childcare... but i would LOVE to have an excuse to walk off on a conference call or shut myself in my room on my own work Zoom meeting or whatever, and have a good reason to pawn this virtual school stuff off on somebody else once in awhile!!! HAHAHAHA

MS hybrid (in school Mon and Tues, whole school all remote Wed, cohort remote Thurs and Fri).
Being glued to that chromebook for hours on end is exhausting and really hard to watch. When he finishes for the day, he has these glossed over eyes that worries me to an extent. You would think there’s the 3 minute bell break to stretch your legs and such but you need to be logged into the next meet right on time. Very stressful. He begs more for in person days (this coming from a kid who loathes school under normal circumstances).
I wish the district could alternate that all remote Wednesday between the cohorts to start. All in is wishful thinking.
Our district also switched platforms just this year from Google Classroom and the teachers just learning how to post on it and the students learning where things are, how to submit etc is just adding to this mountain of frustration.
Our elementary schools are full time in person.

Re: In-person or virtual students?

1 week in, 1 week remote with live streaming classes. When he is remote, he goes to a coaching program from 8-11:30am, afternoon classes are done at home. It’s been going well and I think I’m going to stick to that plan.

K-12 is all full in person. People did have the choice to go full remote if they preferred.

Our district is similar. However, they split the school into Tues/Thurs and Wed/Fri. Then, the Monday is alternating between the two cohorts.

It's not too bad. She has had some breaks in the day because some teachers will let the remote kids leave a few minutes early.

I feel like at least it's something. I'd rather the hybrid instead of full remote.

A group of people. In Covid times, it means a small group of the same people that stay together at an event/activity/etc. It's to allow groups larger than a household, but still keep transmissions minimized and more trackable.

Thanks. Never heard of it, probably because my daughter is in school with a full class of 18 all day every day. (I guess that's her COHORT!!LOL!) I

I wish they would just call it a group.

I agree with all these terms. Doesn’t make the situation any less crappy. That’s the society we live in, thriving on buzz words. Lol.

I agree! I don't know why that word bothers me so much - but it really does.
The first time the principal mentioned it, I had no idea what she was trying to say.
Then I start thinking of "cahoots" and I picture little kids in a huddle trying to think of their next crime. Chat Icon

Re: In-person or virtual students?

Elementary school is in person every day. Grades 6-12 are in person twice per week (either M/Th or Tu/F) with everyone distance learning on Wednesday.

The elementary school students who choose distance learning have their own teacher who may normally be assigned to a different elementary school. The in person teachers only teach the in person students.

I believe the older grades that chose to be 100% remote just do synchronous learning and have the same teachers that they would’ve been assigned if they went in person twice per week. With the hybrid model, it’s synchronous learning with half of the class in school and the other half on zoom or google meet. My 7th grader told me that at least one of his teachers only pays attention to the kids who are on zoom. He also has one teacher who’s teaching virtually so when he’s in class, he’s still on a screen with an adult monitoring the room. Not ideal, but I’m glad he’s not entirely remote.

Are your classrooms huge? We only have 10-12 in because of the distancing regulations. Some grades are full time but, half of the class is in the classroom and the other half is either in the library, art room, gym or makerspace.

Average size. I have no idea how they are doing it and I honestly don't care.
She said they are spaced apart. How far, I have no idea
But they are forced to wear masks all day long so that should be enough.

Our kids are too, in average sized classrooms.

It's annoying how differently school districts interpreted the guidelines. There are 16 in person kids in DS2's 3rd grade class and 10 in at a time (he's in a co-teach and some kids get to go all 4 days - I am very familiar with 2 even groups and drawing an array to illustrate right now lol). They are fully masked all day. We have no plexiglass as they deemed it a fire hazard.
