Schools closing?

So far I've heard Three Village closed an elementary school and high school. Also, Cold Spring harbor closed a high school. Are these rumors? Can anyone verify the veracity? Wondering if the plan is for them to reopen or stay closed indefinitely?

Schools closing?

Three Village, Port Washington, Syosset, Southold, Cold Spring Harbor, Malverne, East Rockaway, Copaigue. Those are the districts I know of that have reported positive cases since the first day of school. I believe most schools were only closed for 24 hours, for a deep cleaning. I don't believe the school has to close for two full weeks for only 1 or 2 cases.

Re: Schools closing?

All schools are going to have cases because everyone has either had Covid, has Covid or will get Covid. Our school district has seen 2 cases. The first case was a teacher who had contact with so many people in the building that they just closed the whole school for 2 weeks. The second case was a person who had such limited exposure that they did not close at all - they just notified people in close contact with that person to stay home for 2 weeks. It's going to happen everywhere. I don't think it is anything to really be concerned about. If people believe masks work and are wearing them then we should be fine. We need to keep moving forward.

I saw that one child in an elementary school in my district tested positve. According to the state website someone posted in another thread that's the only one so far. I am not sure how they handled it but I dont believe they closed the school

Schools closing?

I am in Three Village and we did not close a school. We had a teacher tested positive in one class so they quarantined the class and moved them to remote learning for 2 weeks. We had one student in the HS.

It is inevitable to get cases. The virus is still out there so this should be no surprise. I do not understand though why schools are closing for one case. If they are following social distancing, mask wearing and cleaning properly only close contacts (which should be few) need to quarantine.

We got word tonight that a child in one of the elementary schools tested positive. They are only quarantining the class and whoever rode the bus with this student. Pending no further updates the class can go back to the school on the 30th.

Wow - yes there is a pandemic but I feel that our school district hasn’t fully communicated what will happen if there is a positive case so this is a very good question.

A catholic school in my area had two positive cases (student in for orientation and staff member) and they closed for 2 days plus the weekend to clean (I’m not on LI)

This is rude and insensitive to parents, consistent with your other posts.

OP appears to be fact finding. Not shocked or alarmist or anything else.

My schools have been pretty quiet About exact protocalls of what shuts down a class, a wing, the entire school and for how long. I think a lot of us are curious how schools are handling it. Since most of us work, this has a huge impact on child care, needing to home school etc. it’s nice we can share information and be aware of what’s going on.

Before you attack me to say I should have thought of all this before having kids - it does take a village and women/moms supporting each with with information is part of it. Since you aren’t, just stay away. You are toxic.

OP we had an admin exposed but wasn’t around. Any kids or others They just cleaned the school.

Schools closing?

Schools are “quiet about protocols” because it is not their jurisdiction. The DOH tells them what to do based on the specific scenario.

A school district near me closed for a week because all the administrators had to quarantine because they all ate lunch in the same conference room while social distancing, but without masks. They thought since they were distanced it was fine, but the DOH said no and made everyone quarantine. They won’t be making that mistake again.

Schools closing?

I can tell you what my sons school did. We got a call at 11pm Wednesday night incoming the entire district there was a positive student case at his elementary school. The school was closed Thursday for a deep cleaning and also to give the district time to do the contact tracing.

A town preschool that also houses an aftercare program open to district students was closed because the student had attended aftercare there the week before.

We waited for tracers to call (if we were in contact). About 3pm our PTA sent out the notice that tracers were complete. My son was not in contact but if you were on the bus, class, or even the bathroom you were contacted (we have bathroom monitors).

I’m am so impressed by how our district handled it all. The kids were back in school Friday (anyone that was in contact is quarantined for 14 days).

I deleted my post as the info wasn’t quite public yet.

We had a positive case at my sons elementary school. All kids on the bus and in his cohort must stay home tomorrow and await further guidance from the DOH (most likely a quarantine).

The district hasn’t reached out to parents who were not in the grade or bus yet but rumors are now flying around town.

ETA - the principal reached out to parents at the school and the superintendent reached out to the district.

They also canceled 2 busses tomorrow (I guess the child takes a different bus in the morning and afternoon, one being the bus my son takes to the middle school)

youre an assholee what does that have to do with this question about how schools are being handled with cases??!!!!

OP we had 2 calls so far one was a kid who was fully remote so it has no effect on the district.

The other was one who attended a boces. the kids who were in contact we contacted. they said anyone with whats considered secondary contact was not a concern and we dont have to close.

From what I am gathering most schools that have to close is temp. and the plan is they reopen once the time period has ended.

Schools closing?

We have one teacher who tested positive. All kids in that class were notified about what they have to do as per the Department of Health. My child isn't in that class, so I don't know exactly what they are doing beyond staying home today to await further guidance from DOH. A second teacher who was in close contact with the positive teacher is on 14 day quarantine.

Schools closing?

Our district has had 2 positive cases. They shut down the 2 respective buildings for 2 days for cleaning. They both reopened today. I'm not surprised, but am impressed with how the district handled it. I will add that they were not told by the DOH to close, the super did it on his own.

My step son went back today, he goes to a special education school in NJ. They were notified of a child who was in the building today had been exposed. But the child had had a negative test on 9/16.

They are cleaning overnight and will be back tomorrow
