Schools....is there a long term plan??
Is there “phases” or anything with schools easing restrictions? Or is this yet another thing we are just winging and going at blindly???
I can’t imagine if by November infection rate is still below 1-2% that the kids can’t have gym closer than 12 feet. Or have recess with no masks. Maybe eat lunch in a cafeteria.
I only ask bc I feel terrible that my kids two favorite things (gym and recess) are currently their least favorite and they keep asking when it will get “fun” and I don’t have an answer for them. I mean, my son can only play soccer with his class....not the other class bc two classes can’t share a ball. So if no one in his class wants to play, he can’t play with his friends in the other class. I’m just over it.

I haven’t heard anything it’s on of those we will know once Cuomo tell us.
Also can anyone tell me why they have to be 12ft apart when every where else it’s only 6ft?

Cuomo has an infection rate threshold for schools to be open. If it's below that, they can open, above that, they have to close. After that it's up to the individual districts to implement the regulations set forth such as social distancing, class sizes, masks etc
Some schools, like mine, are open full time in person already. Others apparently didn't have the space, staff or supplies to be able to follow the rules set forth so they are hybrid.
As far as when those rules won't apply anymore, I have no idea.
We are not 12 ft apart in my school. The desks are 6ft apart.

Bowling alleys...what do they need to do to get to the next “phase”? We are all going at this blindly and it’s just super frustrating.

There is no plan. It's just whatever Cuomo wants. And honestly, we are going backwards. Infection rate has been around 1% for almost 2 months and today they cancelled ALL school sports on Long Island until next year. I don't see any of the current restrictions being lifted at all until every child is vaccinated.

Restaurants on LI are at 50 % now. I heard the city can open indoor with 25% on 9/30 and no bar seating whatsoever. Many city restaurant owners say thats a slap in the face because they can't even pay their overhead at 25% and will have to stay closed due to that. But he did that only because 200 restaurant owners slapped a 2 billion dollar lawsuit on the state. Same with gyms. He only responds to lawsuits.

But my fear with schools is, what if we keep the infection rate around 1% the entire school year and come June no restrictions have been adjusted. That means there is no way cuomo will say “ok school can start normal in September”. I’m worried we will go thru an entire year and next September the kids will still be dealing with this ridiculous “new normal”

My ped had a good point saying that the state should have put out a few plans and let districts choose from them. This way schools should be able to find one that they can manage and not have them all spend the whole summer trying to come up with one from scratch. Then the state would be able to compare what works and doesn't more easily and that could guide them going forward. When every school is so different there's no comparing and no good data to go by.
To answer the original question, they will stick with the hybrid plan until the state removes social distance requirements.

Yes. Enough people want it that way that it will fly. At this point it is becoming clear that this is the long term plan. But hey, at least casinos are open, the NFL is playing with fans there, and protests are safe (depending on what is being protested). All of this is exhausting, mentally and emotionally, financially and physically. Today’s announcement killed me because some of these athletes have worked so hard and sacrificed so much to maybe get a scholarship, and it’s all been taken away. Yes I know there is a virus. Yes, I know people died. But I also know that at some point we have to also live.

I think the long term plan is, the current plan stands until there is a vaccine. DiBlasio said himself NYC schools will not go back to normal until there is a vaccine. I can see other parts of NY, and the country, following that as well. As it looks now, the UFT is going to fight NYC schools reopening in person next Monday. I think NYC public school students will be remote for a long time, possibly this whole school year. There is no way there will be any normal school before September 2021...if that. It SUCKS and makes me so depressed.

My son plays a travel sport. We are not cleared to play yet. They can practice and play games out of state but nothing in state. And I’d love for it to only be $1500!

I’m guessing ice hockey. My son plays but ours is not that much but ice time is expensive. That would just be tuition. All travel (hotels etc) would be extra.
Last year all in we probably spend close to $20k between his travel team/expenses and then private lessons/clinics/camps

Not my business but you might want to consider switching organizations going forward. My son has already had games out of state and several tournaments. The opportunities are there.
We have stuff scheduled and I’m fully confident in our organization. I know plenty others that don’t even have an ice rink open yet to play in. Plus my tuition is reasonable this year. We are with a new organization this year so I plan on being here til he’s done with hockey.

We spend a lot of money for travel baseball between the league, equipment, private training, travel, etc. It is not as much as hockey which I know is a lot from our friends. People think we are nuts and maybe we are but the experiences we get out of it are worth it. That being said, school sports are a huge thing in our district and very popular and it pains me that most kids will miss out because they cannot afford these private leagues.

This is what I think will happen. We may not think it makes sense, I know I certainly don't think it makes sense, but it is what it is. The vaccine may not be the miracle so many people seem to think it will be, but that won't stop the government from using that as a bargaining chip to get people back to living their normal lives.

The problem is, even IF there is a vaccine there will be a TON of people who will refuse it because they are anti-vax OR because they feel it was rushed to market (which is true).
I am not sure a vaccine that comes out anytime soon will change anything. We shall see I guess.
